I presume you intend to eat them.
When you buy the fingerlings you need to buy male only.
They will then grow to a nice size.
If you buy male and female they will never grow to full size.
They breed very quickly and your 400 fingerlings will number 2000 next year and all too small to eat.
Thanks for that good info on the sex thing and yes, it is to be eaten,Originally Posted by Thetyim
my big worry is them dying,
my plan is to make use of a couple of those tanks thai people use to collect rain water, round and maybe about 170cm deep, not interested in farm quantities but just so that in morning and evening i have something more to do(feed)
my big questions still waiting answer
oxygen and do i really need a flowthru system? 24h/day?
Sorry about me horrible speling
In small tanks, yes. You need a full time filtration system.
If the power goes off, they will die.
You could ties this in with an aquaponics garden if you are just after,a little hobby.

Depends how many fish you keep per cubic metre of water.
Keep it reasonable and you should be able to just drain off and replace a third of the water every few days.
Where will you be getting your water from?
A natural supply is better than a town supply that has been filtered and treated.
I don't know if the pla nin will grow to full size in a 1.7m round pot.

The wife has done a bit of small scale, for our own consumption, fish raising.
Bottom line, Talapia grow bigger and faster in a pond. She tried in tanks and after about six months, several water changes and lots of feed, growth was nearly nothing. She moved the fish to a pond and within 3 months they grew to sufficient eating size.
Catfish did well in the tanks.
i do have a massive pond i the back but i have all kinds of fish in there and the water i always brown could not see past 50cm of water, will it be ok?Originally Posted by Norton

yes, go for the pond.
Pla nin are not as sensitive to water quality as some other fish.
They can survive even in brackish water
