Anyone managed to grow runner beans from the UK? I have grown good plants from seed sent from the UK but due to the fact we have no bees I get no beans on the plants.

I know a few that have tried, all with no success,Snake beans seems to be the way to go ( like long French-beans )
When your flowers are on the beans do you mist them in the evening ? if not try that mate it will help the beans set . Note , I am only talking about what I do in the UK but hope it helps you ,mabe
http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/hsl/...nner_beans.phpYou then must hand pollinate each newly opened flower with a thin paintbrush. Do this by hand each day, simply pressing down on the lower (left) keel of each newly opened blossom to mimic a bee landing. Then use the paintbrush to transfer the pollen from anther to stigma. You should use pollen from another plant of the same variety rather than from the same flower or plant. If you are growing more than one variety, remember to wash and dry the paintbrush between varieties
hope it he;lps.
I can't post links.
Marshalls Garden catalogue has a new Runner bean called Firestorm, self pollinating and can stand high temps.
posted for you robjak, a good find, was looking for seed to bring out, didn't know they shouldn't be eaten raw , can make you ill (stomach cramps and sickness) saw on a Tesco pack of stringless runner beans last night
Buy Runner Bean Firestorm at Marshalls Seeds
Well...we seem to get plenty of the beans at our place (long beans, yard beans, runner beans or Tua Yaow = same same, call 'em what you want). The missus lets a few dry out in the sun, pops the seeds out - and bingo, you've got more seeds for the next batch.
Fukin' Jeez - 3 quid for a packet of seeds!? The last time I bought some seeds in England they cost 6d (old money). Mind you, come to think of it, it WAS a couple or three years ago...
Here in our area seeds most cost 15-20 baht a packet, but the missus just usually cadges a couple from neighbours and whatnot, just to get started. Grows a plant or two - and pretty soon there are more seeds - and to be able to return the favour and give to other people, too.
I read that some varieties of beans are cooler climate types, eg blue lake runner beans. they need cool nights to set.
could be the misting helps.
many garden plants depend a lot on day length, and northern and southern hemisphere plants may not do well in the tropics.
do a search on the internet for suppliers/plants that will grow in northern Queensland to give you an idea. Yates is one well known company in Oz.
Yates are probably the best in oz, and SE Qld a similiar climate to here. Big problem is as i have said before, Samui's bad soil conditions. Needed are Dolomite, Phosphorus and Potassium. Someone here said that its not possible to get Dolomite here, but on my many trips to Surat Thani i pass a sign about 10 klms from Donsak on the right hand side which says "Thai Dolomite Company" it points to a small road ?
Forgot to mention. Elephant manure is the best animal manure to get, and there's plenty of that on Samui.
