The disappearing fish. In the open ocean, there’s nowhere to hide, but the lookdown fish – a name it probably gets from the steep profile of its head, with mouth set low and large eyes high – is a master of camouflage. Recent research suggests that it uses special platelets in its skin cells to reflect polarized light (light moving in a single plane), making itself almost invisible to predators and potential prey. The platelets scatter polarized light depending on the angle of the sun and the fish, doing a better job than simply reflecting it like a mirror. This clever camouflage works particularly well when viewed from positions of likely attack or pursuit
Shark attack: Don’t tell mum, Cooper Allen says after great white mauls surfer off Lighthouse Beach, Ballina
TEENAGER Cooper Allen, who fought off a 4m great white shark yesterday, is in his hospital bed itching to get back in the surf, mates say.
The 17-year-old’s legs were mauled by a man-eating monster at Lighthouse Beach, Ballina, yesterday while he was surfing with a dozen friends, as he does every morning.
Fresh out of high school, Cooper, who lives across the road from the beach, survived but needed a number of stitches across four large gashes on his leg

"Microscopic Underwater Butterfly." Another delicate and beautiful underwater creature that appears during the vertical migration. This is the largest migration on Earth, and it occurs every night in the oceans around the world. Tiny planktonic creatures, larval forms, and pelagic miniatures come up to feed in the dead of night

Is that a lightening eel ,
your seeing things mate.
A big feed there.
These are great Bobo. I've been watching David Attenborough's "The Blue Planet" series of an evening on Netflicks, and many of your pics look like they've come from that.
The overall winning picture is of a lion’s mane jellyfish:
‘Hitchhikers’, by George Stoyle.
“I was working on a project to assess the current biological status of major sea caves around some of the UK’s most remote islands. At the end of one of the dives I was swimming back to the boat when I came face to ‘face’ with the largest jellyfish I’ve ever encountered. As I approached cautiously I noticed that a number of juvenile fish had taken refuge inside the stinging tentacles” George Stoyle.
Below is another Jellyfish entered in the same comp.

Surfer bitten by shark near Byron Bay
A man has checked himself in to hospital in Byron Bay after being bitten by a shark.
The bite, the seventh in the Byron-Ballina region since the start of last year and the third in a month, comes weeks after the Baird government dropped its opposition to installing shark nets in the region.
