I think that trough is from the days when men chewed tobacco and needed a place to spit. There's an old bar in Portland (Luke's) that has a trough along the bar rail, which I was told was for spitting chewing tobacco in. I certainly wouldn't want sit on top smelly stale urine drinking beer all afternoon.
Goes back to days of men only pubs and only 1 hour opening after work know as the "SWILL""
I saw but didn't use one in Dorrigo New South Wales after a few Ales, a lovely spot half way up the state inland from Bellingen
