Thai police asked to probe Kirsty Jones murder claim

Thai Police have been asked to investigate a man named on a Youtube video as a possible suspect in a Welsh backpacker's murder 11 years ago.

Kirsty Jones, 23, from Tredomen, near Brecon, Powys, was raped and strangled at a guesthouse on 10 August, 2000.

Her murder is unsolved but a video has been posted on the internet naming a man allegedly seen near the guesthouse.

Dyfed-Powys Police said it and the Foreign Office had asked Thai authorities to investigate the claim.

Despite a number of arrests, no charges have ever been brought over Ms Jones' death.

The Liverpool University graduate was found dead in a room at the Aree guest house in Chiang Mai, which is north of Bangkok.

She was three months into a two-year around-the-world trip.

The information has been passed to the Thai authorities ” Det Ch Supt Steve Wilkins Dyfed-Powys Police
Dyfed-Powys Police have assisted the Thai Police with the investigation in the past.

Det Ch Supt Steve Wilkins said the force was aware of allegations made in the video.

He said: "This allegation, and its source, has been subject of discussions between Dyfed-Powys Police and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for some time, with a request to the Thai authorities to thoroughly investigate.

"The information has been passed to the Thai authorities as they retain primacy in the investigation.

"We are continuing to liaise with them, via Interpol and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in relation to this information and other lines of inquiry."

'Celebrity' Ferrari fetches £66,500 at auction

A yellow Ferrari previously owned by British rock guitarist Eric Clapton and radio presenter Chris Evans has fetched £66,500 at auction.

The rare 2003 Ferrari 575 Maranello, which has 10,000 miles on the clock, was snapped up by a private buyer at a sale in Silverstone on Saturday.

Auction manager Guy Loveridge said the vehicle exceeded its guide price.

The yellow Maranello was bought new by Mr Clapton, who signed its service book, and was later sold to Mr Evans.

Mr Loveridge said the Ferrari - which was described by Silverstone Auctions as a desirable car in its own right - was in lovely condition.

"Famous name provenance is always a help," he said.

"It's a great car and we are not surprised that it fetched such a large amount of money."

The car had been expected to go for between £58,000 and £66,000 at the Classic Sale at Silverstone, Northamptonshire - the home of the British Grand Prix.

Tour de France: the final stage

Having claimed the overall lead from Andy Schleck in Saturday's time-trial, Australia's Cadel Evans is all but certain to win the Tour today. Alongside him on the start line are Samuel Sánchez (King of the Mountains) in the polka-dot jersey, Mark Cavendish (thus far the best sprinter) in the green jersey, and Pierre Roland (best young rider) in the white jersey. Theoretically, the only one of those jerseys which is still up for grabs is Cavendish's ... unless something calamitous happens to Evans, that is

Evans sips champagne at the start of the 95km journey to Paris. He thinks the win is a formality

Oh wait, what's this? Evans seems to be having some trouble with his bike. Fortunately a replacement is swiftly available and he's back on his way

The Manxman darts to the front and looks uncatchable. His team-mate is celebrating already!

Over the line he goes and the victory is his. It's the 20th stage win of his career and most importantly it's secured his status as the best sprinter of the 2011 Tour. He amassed 334 points, beating José Joaquin Rojas Gil into second place by 62 points

Evans, meanwhile, crosses the finish line among the peloton to secure his first overall Tour victory. He completes the Tour in a total time of 86 hours 12 mins and 22 secs

Having beaten the Schleck brothers, Evans goes one step further and upsets Frank Schleck's baby

At 34, Evans is the oldest rider to win the Tour since the Second World War. Surely the Schlecks, who were pipped by Alberto Contador last year, will have better luck next year?

US invites North Korea to talks on nuclear impasse

A North Korean envoy has been invited to the US this week for exploratory talks on resuming international nuclear negotiations, Washington has said.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said an invitation had been extended to Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan to visit New York.

There was no immediate comment from the North on the talks offer.

This week North and South Korea's nuclear envoys and foreign ministers held unexpected talks.

The North abandoned the talks on its nuclear programme in 2008.

The secretive communist state, which has technically been at war with the South since the war which split Korea in the 1950s, is gripped by a food crisis and labouring under UN sanctions.

Mass arrests in Mexico human trafficking raids

More than 1,000 people have been arrested in a crackdown on human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Ciudad Juarez, officials in Mexico say.

The arrests were made during raids that began on Friday, in which police say they also rescued 20 underage women.

Dozens of bars and hotels in the city centre were searched for missing people, authorities said.

Ciudad Juarez - on the border with the US - is one of the most violent places in the country.

The city saw more than 3,000 murders in 2010, making it by far Mexico's deadliest city.

But human rights groups have often drawn attention to the disappearance of young women in the area.

Analysts say that much of the violence in Mexico, particularly in the north, is linked to the trade in drugs and humans.
