Gold rises above $1,600/oz as debt fears simmer | Reuters

(Reuters) - Gold prices rallied to record highs above $1,600 an ounce in Europe on Monday as investors spooked by the euro zone debt crisis and the threat of a U.S. default bought into the metal as a haven from risk.

Risk aversion swept the markets after euro zone stress test results failed to address the potential for a Greek sovereign debt default before a summit in Brussels on Thursday, and as a deadline to raise the $14.3 trillion U.S. debt ceiling loomed.

Stock markets, peripheral euro zone debt, oil prices and the euro came under pressure, while the Swiss franc -- often seen as a safe haven -- and precious metals climbed.

Spot gold rose as high as $1,602.86 an ounce and was up 0.4 percent at $1,600.26 an ounce at 2:10 a.m. British time. Gold rose more than 3 percent for a second straight week to Friday, a feat it has not achieved since February 2009.

"Gold has room to go up. The smouldering debt crisis in the euro zone peripheral countries and the uncertainty over the debt limit in the United States are currently supporting prices," said Commerzbank analyst Daniel Briesemann.
A tray full of GOLD is not worth a moment in time.

NoW phone-hacking whistle-blower Sean Hoare found dead

A former News of the World journalist who made phone-hacking allegations against the paper has been found dead.

Sean Hoare told the New York Times the practice was far more extensive than the paper acknowledged when police first investigated hacking claims.

A police spokesman said the death was currently being treated as unexplained, but was not thought to be suspicious.

It comes after Met Police Assistant Commissioner John Yates resigned after growing pressure over the scandal.

Meanwhile, computer hackers have tampered with the website of News International-owned The Sun's website, redirecting readers to a hoax story which said Rupert Murdoch has been found dead in his garden.

A group of hackers called Lulz Security, which has previously targeted games companies and US government websites, claimed responsibility via Twitter.

News International said it was "aware" of what was happening but made no further comment.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft obtained this image with its framing camera on July 17. It was taken from a distance of about 9,500 miles from the asteroid Vesta

Today NASA unveiled the first pictures of the asteroid Vesta as seen from an orbiting spacecraft. The pictures of the not-quite-round, 330-mile-wide (530-kilometer-wide) world were sent across a distance of 117 million miles (188 million kilometers). after the Dawn orbiter's successful weekend rendezvous.

Dawn went into orbit around 1 a.m. ET Saturday, at a distance of about 9,900 miles (16,000 kilometers) from Vesta. The pockmarked space rock ranks as the asteroid belt's No. 1 object in brightness, No. 2 in mass (behind the dwarf planet Ceres) and No. 3 in diameter (behind Ceres and the asteroid Pallas).

Size isn't everything: Scientists are interested in Vesta largely because it's thought to be made of the stuff that dominated the early solar system. Once upon a time, before they snowballed into the big planets we see today, most of the objects in our celestial neighborhood may well have looked like Vesta.

Dawn's arrival at Vesta comes after nearly four years of cruising through deep space. "Dawn slipped gently into orbit with the same grace it has displayed during its years of ion thrusting through interplanetary space," said Marc Rayman, Dawn's chief engineer and mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "It is fantastically exciting that we will begin providing humankind its first detailed view of one of the last unexplored worlds in the inner solar system."

This composite shows the comparative sizes of eight asteroids that have been spotted by space probes.

Undocumented Mexican immigrant Jeanette Vizguerra (left), dines with her family on July 10 in Denver, Colorado. Vizguerra is a mother of four children, three of whom were born in the US as American citizens, and is faced a deportation hearing on July 13 at Denver's Federal Courthouse. If Vizguerra is deported back to Mexico, she says her husband and children will stay on in the United States.

The hearing on July 13 ended in uncertainty for her and her family, with the court not expected to announce her fate until October. Just one of millions of undocumented immigrants living in the US, Vizguerra first came to Colorado from Mexico City with her husband and first child 14 years before. Now an activist for the immigration advocate group Rights For All People, she also owns a janitorial service and says she has always paid state and federal taxes on her income. Some two years ago she was stopped by a traffic policeman for driving with expired tags and taken to jail when she could not prove her legal immigration status. Out on bail during court proceedings, she now faces the real possibility that she will be deported to Mexico and separated from her family in the United States.
