Female inmates participate in a fashion show at the Piedras Gordas Model Penitentiary, north of Lima, Peru on August 22. Women, most of them serving time for drug smuggling, prepare to show woven articles made by them at a workshop. Participating inmates can offer and sell their handicrafted products thanks to a program developed by the Peruvian National Penitentiary Institute (INPE). Male and female inmates separated in four different areas in this high security installation, all living in single cells, participate in this system; those who chose not to study or work are moved to lesser equipped jails ran under traditional regulations. Most women convicted on drug trafficking charges are held in this facility.

Wildfire threatens Yosemite national park
Firefighters on Saturday had barely begun to contain a 200 sq mile wildfire that has crossed into California's Yosemite national park. The Yosemite Valley, the part of the park frequented by tourists, remained open, clear of smoke from the fire that remained about 20 miles away. But elsewhere, the governor declared a state of emergency for San Fransisco, because of the threat to the system that delivers the city's power supply
