Sweden male train drivers wear skirts after shorts row

Martin Akersten says his colleagues came up with the idea in winter

A dozen male train drivers in Sweden have circumvented a ban on shorts by wearing skirts to work in hot weather.

The workers, who operate the Roslagsbanan line north of the capital Stockholm, have been wearing skirts to work for the past two weeks.

Employer Arriva banned the drivers from wearing shorts after taking over the running of the line in January.

But the company has given the men its blessing to wear skirts, according to local newspaper Mitti.

"Our thinking is that one should look decent and proper when representing Arriva and the present uniforms do that. If the man only wants [to wear] a skirt then that is OK," Arriva communications manager Tomas Hedenius told the paper.

"To tell them to do something else would be discrimination."

Driver Martin Akersten told the BBC he and his colleagues came up with the idea to wear skirts after they were informed of the new company dress code in the winter.

"We have always said that when summer comes, we will get some skirts and wear them. It's very warm weather here so we would like to wear shorts but if we can't then we have skirts for comfort".

Naked cyclists bring Mexico City streets to standstill

The cyclists say nakedness highlights their vulnerability on the road

Thousands of naked cyclists have ridden through the streets of Mexico City to mark the World Naked Bike Ride.

The event is to raise awareness of the importance of cycling for exercise and as a way to reduce fossil fuels.

Organisers say riding naked also highlights the fragility of the human body and the need for drivers to be more careful on busy city streets.

The movement began nine years ago in Canada and has been held every year in various cities around the world.

Traffic in Mexico City came to a standstill as onlookers stared in amazement or took photographs of the cyclists - naked or semi-naked - streaming past some of the city's most famous landmarks.

The rally ended in Zocalo Square.

Rafael Nadal coped with an on-court intruder and the Paris rain to beat fellow Spaniard David Ferrer and win a record eighth French Open title.

Nadal, 27, came through 6-3 6-2 6-3 to reaffirm his dominance on clay, and further elevate himself among the greats of the sport.

However, the final was marred by a brief protest high in the stands during the second set that was quickly followed by an intruder leaping onto the court while brandishing a flare.

City officials say the implosion at 7:36 a.m. Sunday may have been visible in parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and New Jersey.

The 11-story brick apartment building formerly housed Coast Guard families, but the Trust for Governors Island says the building has been vacant since 1996 and does not meet current building codes.

The implosion took about 10 seconds and was overseen by the city Fire Department and the Department of Buildings.

Governors Island was open to the public as usual at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Two miners walk through a open copper pit in the Serbian town of Bor on June 8, 2013. In Serbia, foreign companies are picking up a long tradition of prospecting for gold and copper and discovering deposits that could mark a revival of the country's mining sector, Reuters reports.

Pressured by cautious investors, international mining companies are putting riskier exploration projects in places like Africa on ice and turning to developments where infrastructure and political risk are lower.
