PHOENIX – Eddie “Flathead Ed” Wilcoxson was asleep on the fold-out cot of his 24-foot pontoon boat on Friday, April 12, when what would become a state record flathead catfish began taking drag at Bartlett Lake.

About 35 minutes later, at 2:37 a.m., Wilcoxson, 56, boated what Arizona Game and Fish Department officials verified is a 76.52-pound flathead catfish. It measured 53.5 inches in total length with a 34.75-inch girth.

It also became the heaviest recorded fish of any species in state history, topping the 74-pound flathead catfish caught in 1988 out of the Colorado River by Walter Wilson of Bard, Calif. …

“Everybody’s got the same chance I do,” Wilcoxson said. “You just have to get out and do it.”

Christian Wulff declined to pay a fine to avoid trial

Former German President Christian Wulff has been charged with corruption in a scandal which prompted his resignation last year.

Mr Wulff, 53, stepped down in February after less than two years in the post.

He is alleged to have accepted the payment of hotel bills by a film producer in return for favours while he was premier of Lower Saxony.

The former president rejects the allegations and has vowed to clear his name in court.

A court in Hamburg must now decide whether to try Mr Wulff on charges brought by the public prosecutor.

He had rejected an offer from the prosecutor in March to settle the case with a fine - a procedure allowed for cases not considered especially serious.

The film producer, David Groenewold, has also been charged with bribery.

He is alleged to have paid hotel bills for Mr Wulff in Munich during the Oktoberfest beer festival in 2008 and on the northern island of Sylt in 2007.

In return, Mr Wulff is accused of having lobbied German companies to support Mr Groenewold's work.

Household waste disguised as hay bales dumped in Essex

Hundreds of tonnes of household and business waste has been disguised as plastic-wrapped hay, straw or silage bales and dumped on farmland in Essex.

About 1,500 tonnes of waste was discovered on the land in Purfleet.

Three men from east London, aged 19, 23 and 47, have been arrested on suspicion of depositing and storing waste on an unpermitted site.

They were interviewed by Environment Agency officers and bailed until 10 July pending further inquiries.

The Environment Agency said it was concerned other sites in Essex may be targeted in a similar way.

The agency believes people are making huge sums of money by charging to take away household or business waste but then dumping it at remote rural locations.

A demolition team toppled two landmark smokestacks that have long towered over the now-defunct ASARCO copper smelter in Texas. Three hundred pounds of dynamite were used to bring down the 600-ft and 829-ft tall chimneys early Saturday. The chimneys were demolished as part of the smelter cleanup plan.
