Barry George loses compensation case
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1821.jpg Mr George was first convicted in 2001 but an Old Bailey retrial took place in 2008
Barry George, wrongly convicted of the murder of BBC TV presenter Jill Dando, has lost a bid for compensation.
Two High Court judges said he failed to meet the test which would entitle him to compensation.
Three other people whose convictions had been quashed also failed to win compensation.
But one man, Ian Lawless, who spent eight years in prison for murder before being freed by the Court of Appeal in 2009, was successful.
He will now have his case reconsidered.
Previously, compensation was only awarded for a miscarriage of justice if a claimant could effectively prove they were innocent.
But a Supreme Court hearing in 2011 widened this by saying that if a person could prove that no set of circumstances could possibly lead to their conviction by a jury, they could get compensation.
In effect saying that they did not have to prove they were innocent, but did have to prove that any jury which would consider their case would not convict them.
The judges at the High Court ruled that Mr George's case did not pass this second test.

Guns and drugs smuggling soldiers jailed
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2013/01/2938.jpg Lemar Loveless, top right, was described as the mastermind behind the plot
Four British soldiers who tried to smuggle guns and drugs into the UK have been jailed.
The men, along with a fifth man, were caught after firearms, ammunition and cocaine were found in a car arriving at Folkestone from Calais in January 2012.
They were convicted of firearms and drugs charges on Monday after a six-week trial.
At Woolwich Crown Court they were given prison sentences ranging from six-and-a-half years to 14 years.
Describing it as "a carefully planned enterprise" Judge Philip Shorrock said: "The guns were intended for use by serious criminals. They would be used to kill or maim."

Thousands of anti-abortion demonstrators are marching through Washington to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court to protest the landmark decision that legalized abortion.
Crowds held signs and chanted Friday on the National Mall and surrounding streets for the March for Life.
The demonstration this year coincides with the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that created a constitutional right to abortion. Earlier this week, opponents marked the anniversary with workshops, prayers and calls for more limits on abortion rights.
Among the speakers was former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum. He says the country responded with love to the struggles of his daughter, Bella, who was born with a serious genetic condition. He said the family is better off for having Bella in their lives.
