Comet retailer to go into administration
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/11/94.jpg Comet is thought to have made losses of £35m in the past year
Around 6,500 retail jobs are at risk after electrical chain Comet confirmed that it will be put into administration next week.
Private equity firm OpCapita, which owns the 240-store business, has lined up restructuring specialist Deloitte to act as administrator.
OpCapita bought Comet last year for just £2, but the business has struggled from the downturn in consumer spending.
Comet's demise is one of the biggest High Street casualties of recent years.
Two weeks ago, OpCapita, said it was examining a number of potential bids for the retailer.
The administrator will run the business as a going concern while it assesses options for sales, closures and liquidation.
Comet said it was "urgently working" on plans to secure the company's future.
Customers with outstanding orders are being told it is "business as usual until further notice" and that the group intends to fulfil deliveries of products that have been paid for.

A burqa-clad woman begs at the Blue Mosque believed by some Muslims to be the site of the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad, in Mazar-I-Sharif, Afghanistan, Nov. 1, 2012. According to historical documents, Imam Jaffer-I-Sadiq ordered Abu Muslim I Khurasani to bring the sacred coffin from Najaf in Iraq to Mazar-I-Sharif, where it was buried in the seventh century. The sacred coffin was recognized in the twelfth century and Afghan King Sultan Sanjar-I-Salgioqi built a shrine around it. Over time the building was destroyed and hidden for two and a half centuries

Farrow: John Suddards and Betty Yates murderer jailed for life
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/11/295.jpg Farrow claimed he had been sexually abused at boarding school by a priest
A homeless drifter who murdered a vicar and a retired teacher has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison.
Stephen Farrow, 48, who was obsessed with religion, had admitted the manslaughter of the Rev John Suddards, 59, in Thornbury, near Bristol, but denied his murder.
He denied stabbing Betty Yates, 77, at her home, in Bewdley, Worcestershire.
But the jury at Bristol Crown Court found him guilty of both murders.
Farrow had refused to leave his cell for parts of the trial, despite a jury request to attend so they could hear his evidence. However he was in the dock for the verdicts.
He had been diagnosed with a psychopathic personality disorder and his barrister argued it "substantially affected" his ability to exercise self-control.
He had pleaded guilty to the vicar's manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility

MP's expenses: Denis MacShane faces 12-month suspension
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/11/297.jpg Denis MacShane has been suspended by the Labour Party
Former Labour minister Denis MacShane is facing suspension from the Commons for 12 months.
A Parliamentary committee found he had submitted 19 false invoices which were "plainly intended to deceive" Parliament's expenses authority.
The committee said it was the "gravest case" which has come to them for adjudication.
Mr MacShane, who has been suspended from the Labour Party, said he was "shocked and saddened" by the move.
The committee's report described Mr MacShane's false claims as "far from what would be acceptable in any walk of life" and "fell far below the standards of integrity and probity expected of every member of the House.
In effect, he was sending the invoice to himself and writing his own cheque” Standards and Priviliges Committee report
It also criticised the MP for Rotherham for failing to co-operate with the inquiry.
The false invoices related to work Mr MacShane carried out in Europe, an area for which he previously had ministerial responsibility.
Between 2004 and 2008, he submitted 19 invoices totalling £12,900 for "research and translation" work carried out by the European Policy Institute

Lagos 'go-slows' continue despite fresh measures
It may be on the fast track to becoming Africa's most populous city, but Lagos is frequently at a standstill. State governor Babatunde Fashola has ushered in measures to tackle the Nigerian city's congestion, but some of his efforts have met resistance – not least a motorbike ban that has denied citizens what was previously a popular way of negotiating the gridlocked streets. With buses increasingly overcrowded and more pedestrians around, frustration is growing among those unable to afford alternative modes of transport
