Camorra mafia boss shot at beach resort in Italy
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/08/2332.jpg
Police in Italy are hunting the killers of a Camorra mafia boss who was gunned down on a beach south of the capital, Rome, in front of terrified bathers.
Two men attacked Gaetano Marino, who was reportedly shot when he came out of the water at Terracina to answer a call on his mobile phone.
Marino, 48, was dubbed Stumpy after losing both his hands while reportedly planting a bomb in the 1990s.
One reported theory is that he was killed as part of a power struggle.
He headed the Scissionisti clan in Naples, the Italian news agency Ansa reports.
His killing on Thursday came a month after a similar attack in a public square in the coastal town of Nettuno, also south of Rome, when organised crime suspect Modestino Pellino was shot and killed.
Italy's public broadcaster Rai screened a gala show in February which featured a tribute to Marino by his young daughter, where she called him in a song "the world's most beautiful daddy". Marino himself was in the audience.
Roberto Saviano, the anti-mafia journalist and author, accused the channel of pandering to criminals. A Rai official said the show had been purchased from an outside producer.

Nineteen shot in Chicago night of mayhem
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/08/2333.jpg
Nineteen people were shot in seven attacks overnight in Chicago, as the US city's gun violence epidemic continued.
Thirteen of the victims were shot within a half-hour period, including eight in a drive-by shooting on a single street.
Chicago officials have been battling a sharp increase in shootings and homicides, with some elected officials arguing gangs do not fear the police.
The city's murder rate has spiked 29% year-over-year as of this month.
By that time in 2011, 270 people had been killed in the city, according to data complied by the local newspaper RedEye Chicago.
In 2012, that number is 348.
Most of the violence has been in Chicago's troubled south and west sides, but there also have been a handful of incidents in the downtown area.

Chinese bus collides with tanker, killing 36
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/08/2421.jpg
At least 36 people have died after a sleeper-bus collided with a methane-laden tanker in northern China, state-run media say.
The two vehicles burst into flames after the accident in the city of Yanan in the middle of the night, Xinhua news agency reports.
It quoted local police as saying that three people survived the collision, but suffered injuries.
The cause of the accident in Shaanxi province is being investigated.
The two vehicles collided at about 02:00 local time (18:00 GMT Saturday) on the Baotou-Maoming motorway.
"Soon after the collision, the bus was engulfed by flames," local police officer Yue Jiuxiang told the state-broadcaster CCTV.
"The front part of the bus was seriously damaged. Also most of the passengers were sleeping. This is why so many people died."
Chinese media later published photos, showing the burnt wreckage of the bus stuck against the back of the tanker.
Officials said the bus had been heading to Shaanxi's provincial capital of Xian from Inner Mongolia.
China's roads are highly dangerous, with traffic laws and safety widely flouted across the vast country.
In 2011, more than 62,000 died in traffic accidents, state media reported
