Two woman hug as community members pay respects to the six victims in the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, at the Oak Creek High School on Aug. 10, in Oak Creek Wisconsin. Suspected gunman, 40-year-old Wade Michael Page, allegedly killed six people at the temple on August 5 and then killed himself at the scene. He was an army veteran and reportedly a former member of a white supremacist heavy metal band. Three others were critically wounded in the attack.

A woman weeps as mourners attend the funeral and memorial service for the six victims of the Sikh temple of Wisconsin mass shooting in Oak Creek, Wis., on Aug 10. The public service was held in the Oak Creek High School. Three other people were wounded in the shooting last Sunday at the temple. Wade Michael Page, 40, killed five men and one woman, and injured two other men. Authorities say Page then ambushed the first police officer who responded, shooting him nine times and leaving him in critical condition. A second officer then shot Page in the stomach, and Page took his own life with a shot to the head.

A Free Syrian Army fighter walks through a house during clashes with Syrian Army in Aleppo, on Aug. 10.

Syrian forces have pushed rebels back from a strategic district of Aleppo, but skirmishes continued in the city and the United Nations said the conflict engulfing Syria would have no winner.

Syrian President Assad, engaged in an all-consuming fight with his mostly Sunni opponents, appointed a Sunni as his new prime minister on Thursday after his predecessor fled on Monday in the highest-level defection so far in the uprising that began 17 months ago.

Local residents wade through floodwaters in a street in the township of Apalit on the outskirts of Manila on Aug. 10. The number of people killed in floods that submerged most of the Philippine capital Manila and parts of surrounding provinces this week has risen to 60, the government said on Aug. 10.

Thousands of flood victims queue for food relief at a municipal building in the township of Paombong on the outskirts of Manila on Aug. 10. Thousands more Philippine flood victims crammed into evacuation centres on August 10 as waist-high water covered vast farming regions and the death toll from a week of misery rose to 60.

Philippine disaster officials were shifting Friday from rescue work to a massive clean-up of the capital following nonstop rains that left tons of muck and debris from floods littering the city.

The torrential monsoon rains that began Sunday left at least 60 people dead in the worst flooding in Manila since 2009. More than half of the sprawling metropolis of 12 million was submerged at the peak of the floods, and schools and offices closed for days.
    About 2.4 million peo
ple in Manila and nearby provinces have been affected, forcing more than 360,000 to seek shelter in government-run evacuation centers, the Office of Civil Defense reported Friday

Thousands seek refuge as conflict in Congo escalates

Rebels have captured key towns in the area, in the worst conflict for nearly five years, forcing refugees to flee to Kibati on the outskirts of Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. At a meeting of regional leaders this week in Kampala, defence ministers were mandated to look for urgent solutions

There has been a sharp increase in the number of people arriving in Kibati over the last week, and conditions in the camp mean there is a high risk of cholera. People walked for days to get to Kibati. In some cases, the little that they had with them when they fled was looted by armed groups on their journey to the camp

People have built shelters out of the materials they have managed to find

It took two days for Jeanne (not her real name), her husband and three children to reach the camp. 'We were working in the fields when we heard shooting and there were bullets around us. So we ran away with just the clothes on our backs – we have nothing,' she says. 'We do not dare go home'

The local authorities have now designated a space for an official campsite and are going to ask displaced people to leave schools and churches

Rescue workers evacuate residents from a flooded home in Manila, Philippines, on Aug. 8, after torrential rains inundated most of the capital. More than 800,000 people in and around the city battled deadly floods as more rain fell with neck-deep waters trapping slum dwellers and the wealthy elite on rooftops

Fafa, a nearly 18-year-old lioness, undergoes a CT scan Aug. 7 at a veterinary clinic in Brasilia, Brazil. Fafa has lived in the Brasilia Zoo since birth and underwent surgery earlier this year to remove both her ovaries and uterus. Fafa was sedated and brought to the clinic after experiencing seizures and bleeding. Veterinarian John Nardott Ricardo said the lioness underwent a 3-hour-long session of CT scans to its chest, skull and abdomen. Nardott said Fafa might have liver damage from a cancerous tumor the lioness had in 2010.

Republican Romney names Paul Ryan as running mate

US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has named fiscal conservative Paul Ryan as his running mate in November's election.

Mr Ryan, 42, is a Wisconsin congressman and chairman of the House of Representatives budget committee.

BBC North America editor Mark Mardell says the decision is a bold and ideological choice.

The Obama campaign said Mr Ryan stood for "flawed" economic policies that would repeat "catastrophic" mistakes.

Mr Romney formally unveiled his running mate before hundreds of cheering supporters at the retired aircraft carrier USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, Virginia.

In a slip of the tongue, the former Massachusetts governor introduced Mr Ryan as "the next president of the United States", before correcting himself to say he meant vice-president.

Ireland's most successful Olympics for almost 60 years

Team Ireland has had its most successful Olympics for almost 60 years.

The members already have four medals, including one gold and three bronze, and have another guaranteed at least at a silver.

It is the best result since the 1956 games held in Melbourne when Ireland won one gold, three bronze and three silver.

Katie Taylor won Ireland's first gold medal at London 2012 on Thursday.

The 26-year-old, from Bray, County Wicklow, who was Ireland's flag-bearer at the opening ceremony, beat Russia's Sofya Ochigava in the women's lightweight boxing final.

Her win was also significant as these were the first Olympic Games which allowed women to compete in the boxing ring.

The support for the boxer was evident when London 2012 officials declared the roar of the crowd at Taylor's first bout as louder than a jumbo jet taking off, with a 113.7 decibel reading.

After her Olympic victory, the former world champion boxer Barry McGuigan hugged Taylor as she came out of the ring and called her "a legend".

After qualifying as the fourth best diver from the semi-finals, Tom Daley is hoping he can go one step better and finish in the top three in the final. But that is one hell of an ask given the standard of competition he's facing

In the final, Daley's first dive - a back two-and-a-half somersault two-and-half-twists with pike - plops into the pool. It's gets a predictably low score of 75.60, but the Brit complains that flash photos were taken during his effort and is granted a re-dive. His second effort is much better, carding 91.20, placing him second at the end of round one

His subsequent dives are pretty damn good too! Not least his forward four-and-a-half somersault, which scores him a whopping 98.05. He's third with two dives remaining … outstanding stuff

With the Chinese favourites faltering and USA's David Boudia looking good for gold, Daley must maintain his high standards … and he does with another peach of a dive - a back three-and-a-half somersault - which scores 97.20 and leaves him first overall … he's now one dive away from an Olympic medal ... he opts for a lower tariff and nails it to win bronze!

Daley is catapulted into the pool by the delirious British diving team

Ecstasy for Daley just a week after the disappointment of finishing fourth in the 10m synchronised event with Peter Waterfield

After receiving his medal, Daley told the media: "It's been the toughest year of my life. Olympic bronze medal - I can't believe it!"
