BBC Rogue Traders' Dan Penteado admits benefit fraud
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/06/2469.jpg
A presenter on the BBC consumer affairs programme Rogue Traders has admitted illegally claiming housing and council tax benefits totalling £24,000.
Dan Penteado, 40, from Westbourne, Bournemouth, admitted eight offences of dishonestly or knowingly claiming housing and council tax benefits.
Bournemouth Magistrates' Court heard he failed to declare his BBC earnings.
Penteado has been the motorbike-riding on-screen sidekick of Rogue Traders star Matt Allwright since 2001.
He was warned he could face jail and was granted bail while a pre-sentence report is prepared. The case was adjourned until 17 July.
The prosecution said the offences went back to 2007 when Penteado filled out his first claim form and failed to declare he had another bank account.
The court heard he repeated the fraud in subsequent years up to 2011.
In that time Penteado failed to tell Bournemouth Borough Council he had been paid more than £56,000 for his work on Rogue Traders from 2008 to 2011.

Bank's King says 'pessimistic' about worsening economy
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/06/2470.jpg
Bank of England governor Sir Mervyn King has said he is "pessimistic" about the short-term prospects for the global economy.
He also said he had been struck by how much the situation had changed in the past six weeks.
Sir Mervyn said he was particularly concerned about the worsening situation in Asia and other emerging markets.
His comments followed official data showing the government borrowed more than expected in May.
Excluding financial interventions such as bank bailouts, it borrowed £17.9bn, compared with £15.2bn in May 2011.
A 7% fall in income tax receipts contributed to the rise in borrowing

A former detective has been jailed for life for murdering his police officer partner whose body was found in a shallow grave in West Sussex woodland.
Peter Foster, 36, of Haslemere, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to at least 17 years in prison at Lewes Crown Court.
Heather Cooper, 33, who was on maternity leave from Surrey Police, was hit over the head and stabbed in the throat at their home in West Street.
Her body was found in Blackdown Woods, near Lurgashall, on 16 October 2011.
Foster had previously denied murdering Ms Cooper, a mother of two who grew up in York and served as a detective constable in the Public Protection Investigation Unit based at Guildford police station.

Shanghai Metro 'dress code' warning sparks debate

Many internet users agreed women should dress conservatively in public
A Shanghai Metro microblog post urging women to ''pay attention to how you
dress'' to avoid sexual harassment has sparked protests and strong reactions.
The metro operator posted a picture of a woman in a see-through dress on its Twitter-like Weibo account, saying: "It's no wonder that some people get harassed if they dress like this."
This drew criticism for discrimination and sexism from irate women.
But in an online poll, most agreed that women should dress more conservatively.
The post published by Shanghai No 2 Subway Co on Wednesday added that there were many perverts on the subway and asked women to ''cherish'' themselves.
This set off a flurry of comments online, with many decrying the suggestion that women were to blame for sexual harassment by dressing scantily.
"According to this logic, all men can harass women in swimming pools?" one microblog user was quoted as saying in China Daily.

Mexico City airport shootout leaves three police dead
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/06/2486.jpg
Three Mexican policemen have been killed in a shootout with two other officers at Mexico City's main airport.
Officials say those shot dead were attempting to arrest the two officers who are suspected of involvement in a cocaine trafficking ring.
Passengers dived for cover when the suspected traffickers opened fire, killing two officers immediately and injuring a third who later died.
The two suspects escaped and are being sought by the authorities.
Officials said they had spent 18 months investigating corrupt federal and local officials who they suspect are part of a drug trafficking ring operating at the airport.
The area was sealed off immediately after the incident but flights were reported to be operating normally in and out of the airport.
"When the alleged perpetrators were surrounded by the police, shots were fired against the federal agents," a security ministry statement said.
The two officers have been identified, authorities said.
Eyewitness Israel Lopez told the Associated Press news agency: "We were in the food court, and some policemen came in and started shooting at another policeman who was on the floor."
The BBC's Will Grant in Mexico City says shootings in public spaces in broad daylight remain rare in the capital, which has been largely insulated from the violence seen elsewhere in the country.

More than two dozen students graduated on Tuesday from one of New York City's more unusual schools, where pens are forbidden and armed guards watch over every classroom.
The ceremony at the East River Academy on Rikers Island, New York City's main jail, allowed prisoners to take a step toward a better future with a high school equivalency diploma, known as a GED.
"Wow! Wow! I say ‘wow' because now I have something people can appreciate me for," said Adboul Hanne, who is awaiting trial on an attempted murder charge.
Rikers makes the school mandatory for inmates who are 16 or 17 and encourages it for inmates ages 18 to 21. Some 3,600 students pass through the school per year, and about 800 are enrolled at any given time, the New York City Department of Correction said.
