World Athletics Championships 2011
A round-up of the best images from Daegu over the past fortnight where the stars of track and field have been competing for honours ahead of next summer's Olympics
The UK Athletics chief Charles van Commenee said before the start of the World Champs that he hoped Britain would bring back at least seven medals from Daegu. But when Christine Ohuruogu was disqualified for a false start in the women's 400 metres heats during day one, it was an inauspicious start for the team
The following day Dwain Chambers was also axed from the men's 100m semi-finals for a false start. New rules imposed at the championships this year meant that athletes were not given second chances if they jumped the gun
Usain Bolt was the outright favourite in the men's 100m final and was looking to complete the hat-trick of titles he achieved in Berlin two years ago and Beijing in 2008 ... but the crowd gasped as Bolt broke from the blocks too soon
The Jamaican was disqualified in what was undoubtedly the most shocking moment of the championships
Britain had to wait until day six of the tournament to win a gold medal. It was scooped by Dai Greene, who powered down the home straight to beat rivals Cornel Fredericks of South Africa, Aleksandr Derevyagin of Russia and Angelo Taylor of United States in the men's 400 metres hurdles final
Bolt made amends for his elimination in the 100m with a dominant display in the 200m. The Jamaican was cautious out of the blocks in the final but still won by a distance in a time of 19.40 seconds - the fourth fastest 200m time ever
Sally Pearson of Australia won the women's 100 metres hurdles final with an immaculate display, while Britain's Tiffany Porter tripped on the ninth hurdle and finished fourth
Phillips Idowu jumped well in the men's long-jump on the ninth and final day of the championships, but he was outdone by a monstrous effort from the American Christian Taylor who recorded the fifth biggest jump in history
The final event of the tournament was the 4x100m relay race which was won in spectacular fashion by the Jamaican team, including Bolt. In the background, the American Darvis Patton was upended in a collision with the Brits, who failed to hand over their baton on the final leg

Bolivia bans cars for 'Day of the Pedestrian'
Cars and buses have been taken off the streets of Bolivia as the country holds its first-ever "National Day of the Pedestrian".
All motorised vehicles, including public transport, were banned in cities across the country on Sunday.
Bolivia's government says it wants to raise awareness about the environment.
It comes at a time when President Evo Morales' government is facing criticism over plans to build a highway through the Amazon rainforest.
The recent protests against the highway have been an embarrassment for Mr Morales, who is a prominent advocate of indigenous rights and the protection of "Mother Earth
Dan Seaborne 'progressing' after Southampton attack
A footballer badly hurt in an attack outside a nightclub could soon be released from hospital, his club said.
Southampton player Dan Seaborne, 24, was found injured on the pavement with serious head injuries outside Junk nightclub in the city early on Friday.
In a statement on its website, the Championship club said doctors were "hopeful" the player would be discharged from hospital within days.
Two men arrested over the attack have been released from police custody.
Hampshire police said a 35-year-old man from Southampton, arrested after the incident, had been released on bail pending further inquiries.
The second man, a 29-year-old from the city, has been released without charge.
It appears the centre-half had been inside the club in London Road with friends when an argument took place.
The row then escalated outside and police were called to the scene at 02:51 BST.
Thousands of people have joined Facebook groups titled Get well soon Dan Seaborne and messages of support have been added on Twitter.
