Jersey stabbings: Six die in knife attack



Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull of States of Jersey Police has appealed for witnesses to come forward


Six people, including three children, have been killed in a knife attack on the usually peaceful island of Jersey.

Police say a man, two women and the children were attacked at a flat in a secluded part of the capital, St Helier, on Sunday afternoon.

A 30-year-old man, who had emergency surgery after the attack, has been arrested in connection with the deaths.

Police have not named the dead but say they lived in Jersey. Witnesses believe they were all related.

Officers were called to Upper Midvale Road at 15:00 BST on Sunday after reports of an incident at a flat in Victoria Crescent, which spilled outside onto the street.

Forensic officers have been examining the scene as police interview a number of witnesses to try to identify the victims.

Meanwhile, they are holding the suspect in police custody at Jersey General Hospital where he is recovering from surgery.

Cambodia lake battle: How Boeung Kak became a puddle




Once a tourist attraction and home to thousands of Cambodians, Phnom Penh's biggest lake is now having muddy sludge pumped into it by property developers. Residents are fighting back, but is it too late to save their homes?
Heng Mom grimly walks through her lakeside home, pointing out the parts which have suffered from flooding. More than two years of sand-pumping have gradually displaced most of the water from Boeung Kak - and the residents complain that it has frequently inundated their houses.

"Lots of us have had this problem, especially in the rainy season," says Heng Mom. "We never used to have flooding before the company came."

"The company" is Shukaku, an entity which does not have a listing in the local Yellow Pages, but is otherwise very well-connected. It is owned by a senator from the governing Cambodian People's Party. His wife runs Pheapimex, which controls vast areas of land through government-granted concessions.

The authorities signed a 99-year lease with Shukaku in 2007, allowing it to develop Boeung Kak and the surrounding area. A year later, the company started pumping sand into the lake - and the long-time residents' struggle began in earnest.

Around 30 passengers hurt after bus overturns in Belfast




Around 30 people, including two children and a pregnant woman, have been injured after a double-decker bus overturned close to Central Station near Belfast city centre.

Some passengers were put on spinal boards, but none of the injuries are serious.
Five people received medical treatment at the scene.

It is understood that cutting equipment was used to free the badly injured driver from the bus.

Ciaran Rogan from bus company, Translink, said the accident happened around 14:15 BST.

"A double-decker bus travelling towards Belfast city centre mounted the kerb just outside Central Station and collapsed on its side," he said.

Murder inquiry launched after man stabbed in Portadown




A 21-year-old man has been murdered in Portadown, County Armagh.

The victim, named locally as Mark Williamson, was stabbed in Hartfield Avenue just after 04:00 BST on Sunday morning.

Three men, aged 28, 26 and 24 have been arrested and are assisting police with their inquiries.

Sinn Fein MLA, John O'Dowd said he was "shocked and stunned" to hear of the fatality in the town.

"The previous night we had two young men very seriously injured in a knife attack and it just shows the consequences of people using knives in this manner," he said.

"The consequences are fatal and are devastating, not only to the victims, but there are going to be people serving very long jail sentences as a result of these knife crimes."

Mr Williamson was also known as Hector and had a seven-month-old daughter.

He lived in a flat near to where he was stabbed. Neighbours described hearing screams and shouting and what sounded like a fight.

The three men arrested are believed to also live locally and to have been known to the victim whose flat was a popular venue for late night parties.

China train crash: Design flaws to blame - safety chief



A crash between two high-speed trains in China that killed 40 people was caused by serious design flaws, the country's safety chief has said.

Luo Lin, who is heading the inquiry into the crash, said the accident near Wenzhou was "completely avoidable".

Mr Luo did not say whether the flaws were in the trains, or the wider rail system. Officials earlier said a signal failure may have been to blame.

The accident has led to an unprecedented public outcry.

The high-speed rail network is a flagship project of China's Communist rulers, who have overseen the construction of the world's largest such infrastructure over the past four years.

But the project hit problems earlier this year with a corruption scandal.

And the Wenzhou crash has led many Chinese to accuse the government of putting politics and profits before safety.

Arsenal and Barcelona agree to Cesc Fabregas switch




Arsenal and Barcelona have confirmed they have reached an "agreement in principle" over the sale of Cesc Fabregas to the Spanish club.

It means the 24-year-old Gunners captain is set to return to the team he left as a 16-year-old in 2003.

He will now discuss personal terms and undergo a medical on Monday.

"We understand Cesc's desire to move to his home-town club and have now accepted an offer from Barcelona," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Keegan Bradley beats Jason Dufner in US PGA play-off




American rookie Keegan Bradley beat countryman Jason Dufner in a play-off to win his first major at the USPGA.

The 25-year-old triumphed by one shot in a three-hole showdown after the pair ended tied at eight under in Atlanta.

Bradley earlier triple-bogeyed the 15th to hand Dufner a five-shot lead but kept his nerve as his rival faltered.

Luke Donald and Lee Westwood both halved their three-shot deficits during Sunday's absorbing final round but stumbled late on to end three under

Rights groups have expressed outrage after an Indonesian court jailed a Muslim sect member for defending himself from a brutal mob attack.
The court jailed Ahmadiyah member Deden Sudjana for six months, a heavier term than many of the attackers received.
Three Ahmadiyah members were bludgeoned to death in an attack by a 1,000-strong mob of hardliners in February. No-one was charged with murder.
US-based Human Rights Watch said Sudjana's sentence was appalling.
"It seems like the Ahmadiyah face blatant discrimination not just from Islamic militant mobs, but also from an Indonesian court," said the group's Elaine Pearson.
Sudjana was hit with a machete and almost had his hand severed during the attack, which pitted about 20 Ahmadiyah followers against more than 1,000 fanatics in the village of Cikeusik, west Java.
But the court ruled that he had disobeyed a police order to leave the scene, and had been filmed punching another man.

Scott LeDoux, former heavyweight boxer, dies aged 62




Scott LeDoux, a former WBC heavyweight title contender, has died aged 62 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

The American lost to Larry Holmes on a technical knockout in July 1980 when challenging for the WBC belt.

LeDoux also fought George Foreman and Frank Bruno in a 10-year professional career that ended in 1983.

Nicknamed 'The Fighting Frenchman', LeDoux won 33 of his 50 pro fights, 22 by knockout.

LeDoux's final fight was a third-round stoppage by Britain's Frank Bruno at Wembley Arena in May 1983.

After boxing he entered politics and was a commissioner in Anoka County in his home state of Minnesota, until he stepped down in 2010 because of his declining health.

Rhonda Sivarajah, the chair of Anoka County board of commissioners said: "He was a big man with a gentle spirit. I can only imagine the sadness at losing someone so special after such a valiant battle."

LeDoux was the son of a miner who grew up in northern Minnesota. His first professional fight was in February 1974 when he knocked out Arthur Pullins in the third round in Minneapolis.

He won his first 12 fights before losing to Roy Wallace in March 1975. He fought Foreman in Utica, New York in August 1976, losing in the third round.

He earned draws with future world champion Leon Spinks and Ken Norton before being defeated by Holmes in Bloomington, Minnesota.

LeDoux also fought boxing great Muhammad Ali in a five-round exhibition bout.

ALS, a form of motor neurone disease, is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease after the New York Yankees baseball legend whose career and life were cut short by it.

Tajikistan trial for BBC reporter Urunboy Usmonov



Urunboy Usmonov was freed in July after a month in detention


A BBC journalist who was held for a month by the authorities in Tajikistan has been told he will go on trial on Tuesday.

Urunboy Usmonov, 59, was arrested in June and accused of associating with banned Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir.

He has repeatedly denied the charges, saying his only contact with the group was to interview some members as part of his work reporting on the region.

He was told that he must appear in court in Khujand city on Tuesday.

The BBC has insisted throughout that it regards the allegations as completely unfounded.

The corporation has said that it believes meetings and interviews with people representing all shades of opinion are part of the work of any BBC journalist.

Mr Usmonov has worked for the BBC Central Asian Service for 10 years.

He has said that he met Hizb ut-Tahrir members as part of his work reporting on the group, which is active across Central Asia.

Rights groups have condemned his arrest as an attempt to censor coverage of sensitive political and religious issues.
