Steve Williams admits he has lost "a tremendous amount of respect" for Tiger Woods after the former world No1 ended their 12-year partnership.

Williams caddied for Woods as the American won 13 of his 14 major titles, but Woods announced the split publicly on Wednesday, saying it was "time for a change".

Their relationship had been strained by the sex scandal surrounding Woods which broke in November 2009, and the New Zealander said: "I think anybody in my situation would say they didn't have total respect and that respect would have to be earned. Obviously this situation is certainly not earning my respect.

"I told him when we first met back in 2010 at Augusta that he had to earn my respect back. He was aware of that and he would know right now I've lost a tremendous amount of respect for him.

"Through time I hope he can gain my respect back. He definitely needs to earn my respect again, that's for sure."

Speaking to TV New Zealand, the 47-year-old added: "I'm a very big stickler for loyalty and I stuck with Tiger through his difficult period, when a lot of people thought I should have left his side.

"That was the most difficult period that I've ever been through in my life. I'm pretty hard-headed and took it probably a lot better than my wife and family did, but there's no way that I should have been put through that.

"My name should have been cleared immediately. It wasn't and that's what makes it even more disappointing what's transpired. I never really got pardoned from that scandal so the timing of it is extraordinary. You could say I've wasted two years of my life."

An express train has derailed in eastern China, the country's official news agency Xinhua says.
Two of the train's coaches fell off a bridge after derailing in Zhejiang province, local fire fighting sources were quoted as saying. It is not known if there any casualties.
The train was travelling from Hangzhou to Wenzhou when it went off the rails at about 2030 (1230 GMT).
China is spending billions on constructing a high-speed rail network.
Xinhua said the train derailed at Shuangyu town in Wenzhou, and rescue workers were on their way to the scene.

Canada deports fugitive Lai Changxing back to China

One of China's most-wanted fugitives has arrived back in Beijing after a Canadian court cleared the way for his deportation.

The repatriation of Lai Changxing marks the end of a 12-year legal battle against his extradition.

The 52-year-old, who is accused in China of heading a multi-billion dollar smuggling operation, argued that he would be executed if sent back.

China has reassured Canada he will not face the death penalty if convicted.

Canada, which does not practise capital punishment, forbids the extradition of prisoners to countries where they may be executed.

Correspondents say the case had soured diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Sunday Mirror phone-hacking claim revealed by Newsnight

Evidence of possible phone hacking at the Sunday Mirror newspaper has been found by the BBC's Newsnight.

The programme spoke to a journalist who worked on the paper in the past decade who claimed to have witnessed routine phone hacking in the newsroom.

The source said celebrities including actress Liz Hurley and footballer Rio Ferdinand were targeted.

Trinity Mirror said its journalists work within the criminal law and Press Complaints Commission code of conduct.

Also it has emerged that Lord Leveson, the judge who will lead the hacking inquiry has said he had attended functions with Rupert Murdoch's son-in-law - but that he had informed Prime Minister David Cameron of this before the appointment was announced

Man charged with having dissident explosives and guns

A 41-year-old man has been charged with having explosives and a gun, at Belfast Magistrates' court.

Raymond James Wootton, of Brompton Park in the Ardoyne area, faces seven charges, including possession of explosives, a fire arm and CS gas.

One of the charges is linked to the discovery of a bomb in the Ardyone area on Thursday.

Mr Wootton denies he charges. He was remanded in custody.

The offences are believed to be connected to dissident republican activity.

Among the explosives alleged to have been in Mr Wootton's possession is semtex.

The accused's solicitor said Mr Wootton denied all the charges against him and that there was no evidence to link him to the charges.

Mr Wootton was remanded in custody to reappear by video link next month.

Organisers criticised for allowing races in 'too hot and dangerous' water

French swimmer Bertrand Venturi is assessed by medics after finishing the race

Swimming's governing body has been criticised for allowing the 25km open water races at the World Championships in Shanghai to go ahead, despite the water being "too hot and dangerous".

Of 35 men entered in the race, only 19 finished, with 10 pulling out before the end. Six decided not to start.

At the start of the races the water was 30.5C - just within the safety limit.
Fina president Julio Maglione said: "All necessary safety measures were taken within the regulations."
What's the point in making rules and recommendations if you're just going to blow them off at events like this? Alex Meyer

American swimmer Fran Crippen died last October in hot conditions during a 10km event in the United Arab Emirates.

An investigation into Crippen's death found a number of safety concerns surrounding the staging of open water events.

The extremely high temperatures in China forced the sport's governing body Fina to bring forward the start of the men's and women's races by two hours, to 0600 local time.

But this was not enough for Crippen's friend and US team-mate Alex Meyer, who refused to participate in the event, held off the Jinshan City Beach in the sprawling Shanghai conurbation.

Another American swimmer, Claire Thompson, did start the women's race but was instructed to get out of the water by US officials when their tests showed the water temperature to be 32.6C.

Seven other women retired from the race.

Iran: Nuclear scientist 'shot dead' in Tehran

An Iranian nuclear scientist has been shot dead in the capital, Tehran, Iranian media sources have said.

The scientist, who has not yet been named, was shot outside his home, the Isna news agency reported, adding that his wife was wounded in the attack.

In 2010, nuclear scientist Massoud Ali Mohammadi was killed by a remote-controlled bomb in Tehran.

Iran blamed that attack on Israeli secret service Mossad. Israel has long warned about Iran's nuclear programme.

Some reports said the latest attack involved assailants on a motorcycle, but this has not been confirmed.

In November last year, another Iranian scientist was killed in an attack in Tehran.

The US, Israel and many Western nations have opposed Iran's atomic programme, fearing it may be a front to creating a nuclear bomb.

Iran insists its nuclear programme is for purely peaceful purposes.

This week, Iran said it was installing newer and faster centrifuges at its nuclear plants, with the goal of speeding up its uranium enrichment process.

Enriched uranium can be used for civilian nuclear purposes, but also to build atomic bombs.

The French government condemned the move as a "new provocation".

Anthony Sowell found guilty of murder of 11 women

Anthony Sowell (left) had blamed the smell from his house on a nearby sausage shop

A sex offender who lived among the remains of 11 dead women at his home in Cleveland in the US state of Ohio has been convicted of killing all of them.

Anthony Sowell was found guilty of aggravated murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and abuse of a human corpse in the 11 deaths.

The 51-year-old former US Marine could face the death penalty.

The bodies were found after police went to arrest Sowell in October 2009 on a sexual assault allegation.

He showed little emotion on Friday as the jury returned their verdict of guilty on 82 counts after more than 15 hours of deliberation.

The trial heard how the women's bodies had been disposed of in refuse bags and plastic sheets, then dumped around Sowell's house and backyard.

Relatives of the victims sobbed in court, as did some of jury

Nearly all of the women had been strangled and were nude from the waist down.

Cleveland's police force was accused of failing to properly investigate when the women began disappearing in 2007 as most of them were impoverished drug addicts.

During the trial, several women gave testimony of alleged attacks by Sowell, who was previously convicted of attempted rape in 1989.

One woman told the court she had been raped by Sowell, and that she had seen a headless body in his home.

Sowell's sentencing begins on 1 August.

Until the discovery of the bodies, many in the neighbourhood believed the bad smell was coming from a nearby sausage shop.

The family-owned shop spent $20,000 (£12,260) on plumbing and other maintenance in attempts to get rid of the odour.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner quits debt talks

Republican House Speaker John Boehner has walked away from crunch debt ceiling talks at the White House with US President Barack Obama.

Mr Obama said Mr Boehner had rejected an "extraordinarily fair deal" that would have included $650bn (£400bn) of cuts to entitlement programmes.

The president said he had been willing to take "a lot of heat" from his party.

Mr Boehner told a news conference afterwards that Mr Obama had "moved the goal posts" by demanding a tax hike.

President Obama said he wanted a meeting with congressional leaders, including Mr Boehner, at the White House at 1100 (1500 GMT) on Saturday

Fifa bans Mohamed Bin Hammam for life over attempted bribery claims

Former Fifa presidential candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam has been banned from football for life after being found guilty of attempted bribery.

The governing body's ethics committee made the decision on Saturday after a two-day hearing.

Bin Hammam was accused of attempting to buy votes ahead of last month's Fifa presidential election.

The 62-year-old Qatari withdrew from the election, leaving Sepp Blatter to be re-elected unopposed.

The decision makes Bin Hammam the most senior figure to be banned by Fifa in its 107-year history.

The former head of the Asian Football Confederation is now unable to be involved "in any kind of football-related activity at national and international level for life", Fifa ethics committee deputy chairman Petrus Damaseb said on Saturday.

In a statement, Bin Hammam's legal council said he will continue to fight the case through every legal route available to him.

The statement added: "The Fifa ethics committee has apparently based its decision upon so called 'circumstantial' evidence which our case has clearly demonstrated was bogus and founded on lies told by a senior Fifa official.

"We have strictly observed the legal rules regarding the confidentiality of these proceedings and not shared our evidence, which is compelling, with the media''.

"Fifa, either directly or through third parties, appears to have done the opposite with selective and continual leaking of documentation that has been part of these proceedings to the media in order to influence public opinion and create bias.

Belgian ban on full veils comes into force

A law has come into force in Belgium banning women from wearing the full Islamic veil in public.

The country is the second European Union nation after France to enforce such a ban. Offenders face a fine of 137.5 euros (£121; $197) and up to seven days in jail.

Two women who wear full veils launched an immediate court challenge, saying the law is discriminatory.

France, home to Europe's biggest Muslim population, enforced its ban in April.

Belgium's law bans any clothing that obscures the identity of the wearer in places like parks and on the street.

It was passed almost unanimously by the lower house of parliament in April 2010.
MPs voted with only two abstentions to back the legislation on the grounds of security, to allow police to identify people.

Other MPs said that full face veils such as the burka or the niqab were a symbol of the oppression of women.

US contractor Alan Gross appeals for release in Cuba

US contractor Alan Gross, imprisoned in Cuba for illegally distributing communications equipment, has appealed to the island's Supreme Court.

He was sentenced to 15 years in March after he was accused of setting up illegal internet connections in Cuba.

Gross, 62, says he was only trying to help Cuba's small Jewish community.

He has asked for his sentence to be dismissed. Cuba's official news agency said the court would "issue a final sentence" in the coming days.

Gross appeared in court with an attorney appointed by the Cuban authorities. His American lawyer wasn't present. Foreign journalists were not allowed in court.

The brief appeal hearing lasting less than two hours.
