Bernie Ecclestone in Formula 1 bribe probe

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has been named by prosecutors in Germany as allegedly bribing a former banker during the sale of the sport in 2006.

Gerhard Gribkowsky, in charge of the sale of BayernLB's stake in F1, stands accused of taking a $44m (£27m) bribe.

In return, prosecutors allege, Mr Ecclestone received $41.4m in commissions from the bank, as well as a large payment to a family trust.

Mr Ecclestone said he expects to be cleared of any wrongdoing.

A court will now decide whether Mr Gribkowsky will stand trial on the charges.

The allegations revolve around the sale of BayernLB's stake in Formula 1 to private equity group CVC Capital Partners, which still owns the commercial rights to the sport.

CVC said it had no knowledge of any alleged payments to Mr Gribkowsky.

The firm bought majority control of F1 from Bernie Ecclestone's family trusts and a group of investment banks.

Mr Ecclestone remains F1's chief executive and retains a large shareholding in the sport.

Irish PM in unprecedented attack on Vatican

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny has launched an unprecedented attack on the Catholic Church in parliament.

He said the recent Cloyne Report into how allegations of sex-abuse by priests in Cork had been covered up showed change was urgently needed.

Mr Kenny said the historic relationship between church and state in Ireland could not be the same again.

He said the report exposed the elitism, dysfunction, disconnection, and narcissism that dominated the Vatican.

"The rape and torture of children were downplayed or 'managed' to uphold instead the primacy of the institution, its power, standing and 'reputation'," the taoiseach said.

Jailed Tory peer Lord Hanningfield launches appeal

A jailed former Tory peer is launching an appeal against his conviction for fiddling parliamentary expenses.

Lord Hanningfield, who was found guilty of six counts of false accounting, will have his case heard at the Court of Appeal in London on Wednesday.

The 70-year-old former leader of Essex County Council was found to have claimed almost £14,000 for overnight stays in London, when he was elsewhere.

He was jailed for nine months in July at Maidstone Crown Court.

Lord Hanningfield was the sixth parliamentarian to be imprisoned for fraud following the expenses scandal - after ex-Tory peer Lord Taylor and former Labour MPs Eric Illsley, David Chaytor, Jim Devine and Elliot Morley.

Lord Hanningfield's Court of Appeal challenge will be heard by Lord Justice Hughes, Mr Justice Treacy and Mr Justice Blake.
After his conviction at Chelmsford Crown Court in May, Mr Justice Saunders said the peer, a former Lords opposition frontbench spokesman, would now be partly remembered as a "benefits cheat".

However, the jury heard that Lord Hanningfield was in poor health and had been diagnosed with clinical depression.

The former pig farmer said he had treated the Lords expenses for staying overnight in London as an allowance for living outside the capital and spent just "a minute a month" completing his claim forms.

He insisted his parliamentary duties had left him thousands of pounds out of pocket and said he had "averaged out" his claims to recoup some of the money he spent.

At the time peers, who are not paid a salary, were able to claim up to £174-a-night when attending Parliament if their main home was outside London.

Thomas Ossel from Bedfordshire shot dead in Venezuela

A British man has been shot dead and his brother injured while on holiday in Venezuela, the Foreign Office said.

Thomas Ossel, 28, from near Bedford, died on Monday after being shot in the jaw, and his brother Jack was stabbed.

A Venezuelan police official said officers believed gunmen were trying to rob the brothers in their hotel room and opened fire when they resisted.

The Foreign Office said it was helping the family of Mr Ossel, who worked as a fireman in London.

Mr Ossel, of Cople, and his 21-year-old brother, a student in London, had been on holiday in South America since 30 June.

'Put up fight' In a last e-mail to their parents, the brothers said they were planning to leave Margarita Island on Tuesday, and had been due to return home on 9 August.

Family friend Jacqueline Baxter said they were in their room at Posada Casa Rosa Hotel in the resort of Playa el Aqua on Tuesday morning when a group armed with a knife and gun burst in.

The men and women had already threatened a receptionist and forced the man to take them to where the Britons were staying.

Bond actress Angela Scoular died drinking acid cleaner

A Bond girl actress who had suffered from bowel cancer ended her life by drinking drain cleaner, Westminster Coroner's Court has heard.

Angela Scoular, 65, who starred in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, died in April.
The actress, who lived in Maida Vale, west London, was battling alcoholism and depression and worried about debts.

Coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox recorded a verdict of "killing herself while the balance of her mind was disturbed".

Ms Scoular's death was not suicide, the coroner ruled.

The court heard Ms Scoular suffered non-survivable 40% burns to her throat, body and dietary tract.

The cause of death was ingestion of a corrosive substance and multiple fractures, said Dr Wilcox.

The coroner heard the actress died two hours after drinking the liquid containing 90% sulphuric acid.

She also poured the corrosive liquid on her body.

Angela Scoular played the role of Cathy in Wuthering Heights in 1967

The inquest heard the actress was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and was given the all clear after treatment and surgery, but months before her death she began to fear the return of the disease.

The actress, who had battled alcoholism for years, used to drink between 150 and 210 units of alcohol a week.

Weeks before her death she was arrested for drink-driving while on bail after crashing her car in Wales.

At the time she was on too much medication for bipolar disorder, the coroner heard.

The actress had married Carry On star Leslie Phillips in 1982.

Serbia holds Croatia war crimes suspect Goran Hadzic

Serbian authorities have arrested Goran Hadzic, the last remaining fugitive war crimes suspect sought by the UN tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Mr Hadzic, now 52, led Serb separatist forces during Croatia's 1991-1995 war.

Within hours of the arrest, a Serbian court approved his extradition to the Hague.

He has been charged with the murder of hundreds of non-Serbs.

The arrest comes less than two months after Serbia caught former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic.

Serbian President Boris Tadic confirmed Mr Hadzic's arrest at a news conference.

He said the suspect had been detained early on Wednesday in the mountainous Fruska Gora region, north of Belgrade, near his family home. He had always been presumed to be hiding there, the BBC's Mark Lowen reports from Belgrade.

Germany in deal on Thai Prince Vajiralongkorn's jet

German judges say a jet used by Thailand's Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn that was impounded last week can leave - but only if Thailand provides a bank bond of 20m euros ($28m; £17m).

Administrators for a bankrupt building firm seized the jet amid claims Thailand owes more than 30m euros.

Thai officials say the jet belongs to the crown prince, not the government.
But judges ruled that documentation was inconclusive, and said the jet would be released only when a payment was made.

"No guarantee means no take-off," said Christoph Fellner of the Landshut district court in comments reported by AFP news agency.

"If everything goes well for the prince and we establish that the aircraft really belongs to him, than he will get his bank guarantee back."

The court said it had demanded 20m euros because that was the estimated value of the Boeing 737 aeroplane.

Last week Thailand dispatched senior diplomats to lobby for the release of the plane, but German officials said they could not interfere because the issue was being deal with by the courts.

The German firm was part of a consortium that helped to build a toll road between Bangkok city and Don Muang airport.

The administrators say Thailand still owes the firm for the work they carried out, but the Thais say a court decision is still pending on the debt

Yosemite visitors 'presumed dead' in waterfall accident

Three visitors to a famed US national park are presumed dead after being swept over a 317ft (96m) waterfall.

Witnesses at Yosemite National Park in California said the trio had ignored warning signs and climbed over a metal barricade to pose for photographs.

The bodies of Hormiz David, 22, Ramina Badal, 21, and Ninos Yacoub, 27, have not been recovered.

Other visitors at Vernal Fall had shouted at them to get out of the raging water, a park official said.

The three had been on a day trip to the park in the south-east of the state on Tuesday.

After crossing a metal rail, the group were seen entering the water about 25ft above the fall.

"Several people urged the group member to step back from the river, since it was flowing swiftly and extremely cold," park spokesman Scott Gediman told the BBC by e-mail.

Park rangers were continuing the search on Wednesday, primarily by combing the riverbanks.

Francois Hollande questioned in Strauss-Kahn inquiry

French police investigating alleged sexual misconduct by former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn have questioned top Socialist figure Francois Hollande.

Police want to establish what he knew of allegations that Mr Strauss-Kahn tried to rape a young writer in 2003.

Mr Hollande, the favourite to be the Socialist presidential candidate in 2012, was party leader at the time.

The writer, Tristane Banon, says senior Socialists knew about the alleged assault but failed to act.

Mr Strauss-Kahn denies assaulting Ms Banon.

He also denies separate charges of attempted rape in New York, where he was arrested in May and charged with assaulting a chambermaid in a Manhattan hotel.

Ms Banon filed her complaint in France after Mr Strauss-Kahn was arrested in the New York case.
