Some 455 endangered northern white-cheeked gibbons have been found living at high altitudes and far from human settlements on the border with Laos. Researchers, who had previously found sparse groups in other areas, used the animals' 'loud, elaborate and prolonged' calls to locate the creatures

China executes corrupt Hangzhou and Suzhou officials

China has executed two officials from eastern cities after convicting them of corruption.

Xu Maiyong, a former vice-mayor of Hangzhou, and Jiang Renjie, who was vice-mayor of Suzhou, were put to death after their appeals were rejected.

Officials said Xu and Jiang took almost 300m yuan ($46m; £29m) by embezzling and taking bribes.

Corruption is one of the main causes of public discontent in China. Hundreds of officials are convicted every year.

But only a handful are executed, and it is extremely rare for two officials to be put to death on the same day.

Xu was said to be well known for his extravagant lifestyle - reports said investigators found gold bullion and expensive jewellery at his home.

State-run Xinhua news agency reported that he used his power to interfere with project contracts and to help companies and people obtain land, promotions and tax breaks.

The 52-year-old was sentenced to death in May for taking almost 200m yuan in bribes and embezzled funds.

Jiang, 62, was given the death penalty in 2008 for taking more than 100m yuan in bribes.

The two cases are not linked, but both men were earlier reported to be members of the Communist Party.

Earlier this year, President Hu Jintao focused on corruption during his main speech to celebrate 90 years since the party was founded.

He warned that corruption could cost the party the support of the people.
Several high-profile officials have been executed in recent years - including Shanghai's former party boss, and a former head of the country's main nuclear firm.

India: 'Massive' uranium find in Andhra Pradesh

India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh may have one of the largest reserves of uranium in the world, the country's chief nuclear officer says.

Studies show Tummalapalle in Kadapa district could have reserves of 150,000 tonnes of the mineral, Atomic Energy Commission chief S Banerjee said.

India has estimated reserves of about 175,000 tonnes of uranium.

Analysts say the new reserves would still not be sufficient to meet India's growing nuclear energy needs.

Mr Banerjee said that studies at Tummalapalle have shown that the area "had a confirmed reserve of 49,000 tonnes and recent surveys indicate that this figure could go up even threefold" and become one of the world's largest uranium reserves.

The uranium deposits in the area appeared to be spread over 35km (21 miles), he said, adding that exploration work was going on in the area.

Mr Banerjee said the new findings were a "major development", but India's own uranium reserves would still fall short of meeting its nuclear energy needs.

"The new findings would only augment the indigenous supply of uranium. There would still be a significant gap. We would still have to import," he was quoted as saying by The Hindu newspaper.

India is planning to set up some 30 reactors over as many years and get a quarter of its electricity from nuclear energy by 2050.

Phone-hacking: Dangers lurk for David Cameron

When bloodless coups come about in dictatorships, often it's when the head of government is away on a foreign visit.

But democracies bring their own dangers for absent political leaders.

If David Cameron had not trekked to Africa, he may as well have hired the vast illuminated advertising space in Piccadilly Circus and adorned it with the legend "government in crisis -official".

But no sooner had he departed than some of his own leading backbenchers were whispering that it looked like he was running away.

Chancellor George Osborne was meant to address the restless membership of the influential 1922 committee of backbench MPs on Monday, but the meeting was scrapped - with members settling for nothing less than an encounter with the prime minister himself on Wednesday.

Labour has been on the front foot, but for that very reason restlessness might not turn to revolt as the Conservatives see the logic in closing ranks.

Ivo Sanader, Croatia's ex-PM, extradited from Austria

Croatia has put its former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader behind bars after his night-time extradition from Austria.

He is due to be questioned this week over allegations of corruption and abuse of power.

He was driven across the Croatian border in a silver Mercedes van under police escort, Reuters reported.

Mr Sanader, 57, denies any wrongdoing, and says the charges are politically motivated. He was in power in 2004-09.

He was arrested in Austria in December, on a Croatian arrest warrant, a day after Croatia had lifted his immunity from prosecution.

There are suspicions that Mr Sanader diverted state budget money into a secret slush fund for his conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).

Croatia has been cracking down on corruption, under pressure from the European Union, which it will join in July 2013.

Mr Sanader suddenly stepped down in July 2009, taking Croats by surprise.

He claims the legal proceedings have been initiated by his political enemies.

Correspondents say the case could prove difficult for his former HDZ party colleagues, as they prepare for a general election in December.

Ecuador bans alcohol after 21 die from bootleg liquor

Ecuador has banned the sale and consumption of alcohol for three days after 21 people died as a result of drinking adulterated liquor.

Most of the deaths have been in Los Rios province, where a dry law was imposed over the weekend.

Police seized 28 containers in Los Rios and some contained methanol, a toxic alcohol, officials said.

Officials decided to extend the ban nationwide amid reports of bootleg liquor in other provinces.

Public Health Minister David Chiriboga urged people to seek help if they started feeling nausea or were vomiting.

Other symptoms could include abdominal pain, blurred vision or difficulty in breathing, he said.

Mr Chiriboga said 28 barrels, each with a volume of 55 gallons (208 litres), had been confiscated and some had been found to contain methanol, also known as methyl alcohol.

Police have so far made one arrest, the Spanish news agency Efe reported.
Authorities on Sunday extended the dry law nationally and imposed a state of exception for 72 hours.

The measure was to allow police and the armed forces to mobilise in order to check for and confiscate bootleg alcohol, officials said.

India man arrested over 'vote buying scandal'

Police in India have arrested a man in connection with the alleged buying of votes during a 2008 vote of confidence in parliament over a civilian nuclear deal with the US.

Sanjeev Saxena, alleged to be an aide of a politician, was held on Sunday.

India's Congress-led government survived the vote amid claims of vote buying.

If the government had lost the vote, India would have faced early elections, casting the nuclear deal in doubt.

Mr Saxena's arrest came days after India's Supreme Court criticised the police in the capital, Delhi, for carrying out a "shoddy probe" into what is called the "cash-for-votes" scandal.

In July 2008 two days of debate on the nuclear accord in parliament ended in uproar with allegations of vote buying.

Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members waved wads of currency notes in the air, alleging that they had been offered bribes to abstain.

India's media was awash with reports of alleged defections and desertions among MPs ahead of the vote.

The opposition claimed that a news channel had secretly recorded the alleged bribe taking.

The channel handed over the tapes to parliament speaker Somnath Chatterjee for investigation.
