Building a boat in the back yard

If you build it.... it will float. It's the culmination of a life-long dream – a 36ft sail boat, built by one man, in his back garden

Timber from the 1987 storms were used for the bulkheads. “It was available at low prices, and might have been wasted if it wasn’t used,” says Tolhurst

“In order to finance the boat I had to work outside the farm. I took on building jobs that often involved lead, which I collected over 20 years. I only had to buy the final tonne. To buy all of it would have cost around £5,000”

“It first began to look like a boat when the frame was upside down. In some ways I liked it more then than I do now. You could see its skeleton and the lines beginning to emerge, which was so seductive. I could imagine the finished boat at that point, and thought, ‘Oh, I’ll be done in three or four years’”

“The night before the launch I hardly slept. The initial plan was to keep it for close family until I realised how much the boat belonged to the local community. On the day there was a real sense of togetherness – and a lot of moist eyes”

“I felt a sense of relief when Naida made it into the water. I had a real sense of achievement. Afterwards I almost felt a kind of post-natal depression kicking-in”

“The sailing gear and the rigging was a quarter of the overall cost. It’s specialist work – the sails cost twice as much as the engine”

The Open 2011: Darren Clarke one shot ahead after R3

Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Open at Royal St George's on Sunday.

The 42-year-old escaped some brutal morning weather and fired a one-under 69 to edge to five under on a day of attrition on the Kent coast.

American Dustin Johnson climbed into second after sharing the joint best round of the day, a 68, with countryman Rickie Fowler.

The 22-year-old Fowler's impressive score, despite enduring some of the worst of the driving rain and 35mph winds, took him up to a tie for third with first-round co-leader Thomas Bjorn (71) of Denmark.

Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez slipped to a two-over 72 to end one under alongside joint overnight leader Lucas Glover (73) of America.

World number six Phil Mickelson headlined a group at level par comprising fellow American Anthony Kim (70), US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love (72), Germany's world number three Martin Kaymer, Dane Anders Hansen (72) and South African George Coetzee (72).

US Open champion Rory McIlroy struggled to a round of 74, which included a double-bogey seven after going out of bounds at the 14th, to end on four over.

Open Championship third round leaderboard (par=70)

    • -5: D Clarke (NI)
    • -4: D Johnson (US)
    • -2: R Fowler (US), T Bjorn (Den)

Stepping Hill Hospital inquiry patient Tracey Arden named

A 44-year-old grandmother has been named as one of three patients whose deaths at a Stockport hospital are being investigated by police.

Tracey Arden, from Stockport, and two men, aged 71 and 84, died following the deliberate contamination of saline solution at Stepping Hill Hospital.

Police were alerted when insulin was discovered in a batch of 36 saline ampoules that had been tampered with.

Detectives said the deaths were being treated as unexplained.

Officers are awaiting the results of post-mortem examinations.

Eleven patients who survived the effects of the medication are to be interviewed by police.

Concerns were raised on Tuesday when an experienced nurse at the hospital reported a higher than normal number of patients with low blood sugar levels on her ward.

The contamination of the saline was not restricted to a single ward, the hospital said

Obama holds talks with Dalai Lama despite China protest

US President Barack Obama has held private talks with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, despite strong criticism from China.

Mr Obama told the Dalai Lama of his "strong support" for human rights in Tibet, a White House statement said.

Beijing released an angry statement saying the meeting had damaged relations between the two countries.

Mr Obama's last meeting with the Dalai Lama in February 2010 also drew strong condemnation from Beijing.

The talks - which lasted about 45 minutes - were held in the Map Room rather than the Oval Office, which is traditionally reserved for visiting heads of state.

"The president reiterated his strong support for the preservation of the unique religious, cultural and linguistic traditions of Tibet and the Tibetan people throughout the world," the White House statement said.

"He underscored the importance of the protection of human rights of Tibetans in China."

Mr Obama also reiterated that the US considers Tibet to be part of China, and said that he encouraged "direct dialogue to resolve long-standing differences".

The closed-door meeting came just hours before the Dalai Lama was scheduled to leave Washington at the end of an 11-day Buddhist ritual.

China had earlier warned the US not to receive the Dalai Lama.

Women's World Cup: North Korea players fail dope tests

Jong Pok-Sim is one of five players who tested positive for a banned steroid

Five North Korean players have now tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid at the World Cup in Germany.

Song Jong-Sun and Jong Pok-Sim tested positive before their final group game against Columbia on 8 July, triggering target testing for the entire squad.

Three more players, whose names have not been disclosed by world governing body Fifa, have also failed tests.

The last doping case at a World Cup was when Diego Maradona was kicked out of the men's tournament in 1994.

Putin's German Quadriga role model prize retracted

A prestigious German rights prize will not be awarded this year after organisers were heavily criticised for giving it to Russian PM Vladimir Putin.

The Quadriga Prize is given annually to "role models who are committed to enlightenment, commitment and welfare".

The decision to give it to Mr Putin was angrily received by his critics, who said it made a mockery of the award.

Former Czech President Vaclav Havel had threatened to return his own prize in protest at last week's announcement.

The Quadriga, named after the statue on top of Berlin's Brandenberg Gate, is awarded annually on the anniversary of German re-unification and is "dedicated to all those whose courage tears down walls and whose commitment builds bridges".

The award's organisers said they were retracting Mr Putin's award with "great regret," citing "massive criticism in the media and the political world" over their choice.

"The growing pressure was becoming increasingly unsustainable and risked escalating further," they said in a statement.

No awards will be given in 2011 and the panel said they would "see how it continues next year".

Mr Putin was to be recognised for his "service to the dependability and stability of German-Russian relations", but the move immediately came under fire both in Germany and abroad.

His critics say that while serving as president between 2000 and 2008, Mr Putin - a former KGB spy chief - oversaw oppressive government policies and curbs on civilian liberties.

Germany's human rights commissioner Markus Loening said it was "downright cynical" for Mr Putin to be put in the same group as previous winners Mikhail Gorbachev and Mr Havel.

"It devalues the prize," he said last week.

Northern Ireland violence drives out immigrant families

Terrified families from East Timor flee as loyalists attack nationalist homes in Portadown in marching season clashes

Immigrant families from East Timor fled a Catholic area of Northern Ireland on Friday night when loyalist rioters tried to attack nationalist homes, a Sinn Fein councillor said today.

"Around 100 loyalists attacked police who prevented them attacking nationalist homes," said John O'Dowd, who is a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

The families from East Timor packed their bags and ran from their homes in Portadown, Co Armagh on Friday night, when the area was engulfed in violence, he said.

"They packed their bags, so distressed were they at the violence. Their neighbours tried to reassure them that they would be safe in their homes but they left," he told Reuters.

A significant number of families from East Timor have settled in the Northern Irish town, where they work in the food packing industry alongside many Poles and Portuguese.

For several hours, police were attacked by people armed with petrol bombs, bricks, bottles, fireworks and other missiles in the latest violence surrounding the high point of the loyalist marching season.

The police fired around 20 plastic bullets and arrested three people. They confirmed that loyalists provoked the violence when a planned peaceful protest was hijacked by a violent minority.

The Mayor of the local Craigavon council, Democratic Unionist Alan Carson, condemned the violence.

"This does not do anyone any good. People have a right to live peacefully and feel safe in their own homes. The violence we saw last night is something we assigned to the history books," he said.

In recent days, nearly 50 police have been wounded and dozens have been arrested during violence in both loyalist and republican areas surrounding the annual 12 July parades.

More than 500 parades were held on Tuesday across Northern Ireland, the high point of the Orange Order marching season celebrating the victory of Protestant King William of Orange over Catholic King James at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The majority passed off peacefully but they sparked outbreaks of street violence.

Afghan police keep watch outside the house of Jan Mohammad Khan, who was killed by armed gunmen during Sunday's attack, in Kabul on July 18. Khan was a top advisor to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and a member of the country's parliament in a residential district of Kabul. Khan was killed Sunday, just days after the president's brother was gunned down at home, officials said.

The Open 2011 : Final day

After saturday's sterling performance, day four doesn't start too well for Darren Clarke. He almost ends up among the spectators in the rough by the 1st fairway. He tries a couple of practice swings to check if he can strike the ball without also hitting a spectator in the chops

Phil Mickelson is in swashbuckling final day form again. He sinks a 25ft putt to birdie the 6th. That puts him only 2 shots off the lead
