Libya unrest: Football stars defect to rebels

A group of 17 leading Libyan football figures have announced their defection to the rebels.

They include the nation's goalkeeper, Juma Gtat, three other national team members, and the coach of Tripoli's top club al-Ahly, Adel bin Issa.

Mr Gtat and Mr bin Issa announced the group's defection to the BBC during a late night meeting in the rebel-held Nafusa Mountains in western Libya.

It comes on the heels of defections by military officers.

US man charged with sexually abusing Haitian boys

A US man who ran a centre for impoverished boys in Haiti has been charged over claims that he forced them to perform sex acts for food and shelter, prosecutors have said.

Matthew Andrew Carter, who operated the Morning Star Center, has been charged with four counts of child sex tourism.

Investigators said the 66-year-old "preyed upon" impoverished boys and performed acts that "defy belief".

Mr Carter was arrested in Miami on 8 May and pleaded not guilty on Thursday.

Mr Carter, who also went by the names William Charles Harcourt and Bill Carter, had operated the Morning Star Center in Port-au-Prince since the mid-1990s and lived there with Haitian boys, according to court documents.

Conrad Black ordered back to prison

A US judge has resentenced former media tycoon Conrad Black to 42 months in prison for fraud and obstruction. He is likely to serve just 13 months because of time already served.

The Canadian-born British peer was convicted in 2007 of defrauding shareholders in media holding company Hollinger of $6.1m (£3.8m).

He was freed in 2010 after the US Supreme Court court found an anti-corruption law unconstitutional.

The court let two other charges stand.

In Chicago on Friday, US District Court Judge Amy St Eve ruled that when Black was released in July, more than two years into a six-and-a-half year term, he had not yet served enough time in prison to remain at liberty.

Milly Dowler family: 'Too high a price' for Bellfield conviction

The family of murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler have said they paid "too high a price" for the conviction of Levi Bellfield.

Bellfield was given a whole-life tariff for murdering Milly in Surrey in 2002.

Milly's father Bob Dowler said the trial had been "mentally scarring" and the justice system was loaded unfairly in favour of the criminal.

The director of public prosecutions said it raised "fundamental questions" about the treatment of victims.

Keir Starmer QC said: "Those questions require answers and we will be contributing to the review by the Ministry of Justice into all aspects of victim support."

Milly's mother, Sally Dowler, said their daughter had been defamed in court as unhappy and depressed.

She said the trial had been a "truly awful experience".

But she said "at last the man responsible for the cruel murder of our darling daughter" had been brought to justice.

Milly Dowler's remains were found six months after she disappeared

Bellfield had also faced a charge of attempting to abduct Rachel Cowles, who is now 21, but the jury was discharged and there will be no retrial.

Defence lawyers cited an "avalanche of adverse publicity" following Bellfield's conviction on Thursday for murdering Milly.

Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC is to consider whether there has been any possible contempt of court.

Speaking outside court Ms Cowles said she was hurt and angry by what she called media coverage which had "robbed her of justice".

Next founder George Davies convicted of drink-driving

The founder of fashion chain Next and George at Asda has been convicted of drinking and driving.

George Davies, 69, denied the offence and told Worcester magistrates he had drunk Drambuie with a migraine tablet on private land just before his arrest.

Davies, from near Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, was also found guilty of failing to stop for a police patrol.

He was fined £1,000, given a one-year driving ban and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £965 in costs.

The offences happened in May last year.

Davies told the court he was fit to drive when he left a restaurant in Broadway, Worcestershire, at about 0120 BST on 12 May 2010.

He said he drank the liqueur after driving a Maserati on to his land at the end of a five-mile police pursuit through the Cotswolds.

    'Not credible'
Davies had denied drink-driving and failing to stop, saying he had carried on driving because he feared he could be attacked or held for ransom.

He told the court: "Just because you have got a blue light behind you doesn't mean it's the police force."

Davies told the court said he took two swigs of Drambuie with a tablet after his car entered his driveway, meaning he was on private land and would not have broken drink-drive laws.

"The minute they (the police patrol) came off the road and on to my land, I obviously knew then it would have to be me they wanted to talk to," he said.

"I immediately opened my door and, much to my surprise, he (a police constable) got me by the two lapels and used absolutely foul language."

Chris Bull, chairman of the bench, said Davies' version of events was not credible.

Finding him guilty of both charges, Mr Bull said: "The failure to stop adds weight to the prosecution case and we find that the account of taking a tablet and drinking alcohol whilst being followed by the police - or as you suggested a person of ill intent - is not credible while only yards from your home."

Police told the court that Davies was apprehended after an officer threatened to smash the driver's window of the car if he did not unlock the doors.

He was taken to Worcester police station, where he was found to have 53 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Hassan Nasrallah: Hezbollah men 'spied for CIA'

The head of Hezbollah has said two of the Lebanese Islamist group's members have confessed to working for the CIA.

Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said a third man was under investigation, accused of spying for the US intelligence agency.

The three men, who have been detained, had not compromised Hezbollah or its military capabilities, he said.

The US, which lists Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation, insisted there was no truth in Sheikh Nasrallah's claims.

China is winning its price growth war, premier Wen says

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao has said that China can control inflation and maintain its robust growth.

Writing in the Financial Times newspaper, Mr Wen said "price rises will be firmly under control this year".

He said while the world is still recovering from the global financial crisis, new challenges have emerged.

Mr Wen said countries must 'co-operate closely' to deal with those risks.

The comments come at a time of growing concern over China's high inflation rate.
There are fears that the high prices may derail domestic and global growth, and could spark civil unrest.

Mr Wen tried to allay those fears.

"There is concern as to whether China can rein in inflation and sustain its rapid development. My answer is an emphatic yes," he wrote in the newspaper.

India: Five suspended over 'mysterious' death of doctor

Five prison officials in India's Uttar Pradesh state have been suspended over the mysterious death of a senior health official in jail.

YS Sachan was found dead in a prison in the state capital, Lucknow. Officials said he had committed suicide.

But the post-mortem report said that the body had a number of marks, which appeared to be caused by a weapon.

Dr Sachan was charged with plotting the murder of two health officials. He was arrested in April.

Investigators believe that the murders were connected to the theft of funds from a rural health programme in Uttar Pradesh.

Dr Sachan was accused of plotting the murders of two health officials, Vinod Arya and BP Singh. Dr Arya was killed last October and Dr Singh was killed in April.

Uttar Pradesh authorities said the prison chief and four other staff had been suspended for failing to prevent the death of an inmate.

Dr Sachan was found dead in the toilet of the prison hospital on Wednesday night.

Drunk passengers 'caused fatal Canada air crash'

A small plane crash in Canada in 2010 that killed four people was probably caused by drunk passengers interfering with the pilot, a report says.

Investigators think one passenger kicked the pilot's seat, jamming his body into the controls and causing the plane to dive 500ft (152m) into water.

The three British Columbia residents had chartered a Cessna for a six-minute flight in May 2010.

They had been drinking and arguing and carried liquor and beer aboard.

"The passengers were intoxicated at the time they boarded the aircraft, and had previously been argumentative," investigators with the Canadian Transportation Safety Board wrote in a report.

Canadian law forbids passengers from boarding an aeroplane if they are so intoxicated they pose a danger, and allows pilots to refuse to carry passengers if they have safety concerns.

On 29 May 2010, after haggling over the fare, the passengers boarded the Cessna 185 about noon after being told they could not bring their cargo - several bottles of liquor and a case of beer - aboard a water taxi.

The passengers - two women and a man, all in their 20s - were residents of the Ahousat First Nations reserve on Flores Island, CBC news reported at the time of the crash.
