Veterinary doctors take the blood of a tranquilized female Przewalski's horse for tests, at a farm in the village of Dolni Dobrejov in the Czech Republic on June 14, before it is transported to the military airport in Prague and returned to its native environment in Mongolia.

Four rare wild horses were flown to Mongolia as part of the Prague Zoo's efforts to reintroduce the endangered species to its native habitat.

After a 6,000-kilometer (3,700-mile) flight aboard a military plane, three mares named Kordula, Cassovia and Lima, and a stallion named Matyas, will be transported another 280 kilometers (175 miles) by truck to the western Mongolian reserve of Khomiin Tal. There they will join a herd of more than 20 already reintroduced by a French group.

Syrian refugees protest against President Bashar Assad, in a camp in Yayladagi, Turkey, near the Syrian border, Wednesday, June 15, 2011. Syria's government is calling for the return of thousands of refugees who fled to Turkey to escape violence in northern Syria. Syrian Information Minister Adnan Mahmoud says security, electricity, water and communications have now been restored in Jisr al-Shughour and the area is now safe. Some 8,000 Syrians have sought refuge in camps in neighboring Turkey following a military crackdown that authorities said was to snuff out "armed terrorists" in the region.

China in lead poisoning 'cover-up' - Human Rights Watch

China has been accused of trying to cover up the extent of lead poisoning among children, and of blocking effective testing and treatment.

A report by Human Rights Watch says local authorities in heavily-polluted industrial areas have been sending sick children back to contaminated homes.
It says that in these areas - Henan, Yunnan, Shaanxi and Hunan provinces - anyone who complains is being harassed.

China has promised to clean up chronic pollution from heavy metals.

But reports of poisoning remain widespread - hundreds of thousands of children are suffering from lead poisoning, the HRW report says.

It says that parents are being denied the right to tests and medical help, and says the government should stop delaying a meaningful response as the problem would damage future economic growth and health care

Mandela ex-aide not guilty over Naomi Campbell gems

The ex-head of Nelson Mandela's children's charity has been found not guilty in a South Africa of illegally keeping unlicensed diamonds.

A judge said the case against Jeremy Ractliffe, who was given the stones by model Naomi Campbell, was not proven.

The existence of the gems emerged last year during the war crimes trial of Liberia's ex-President Charles Taylor.

Prosecutors at the trial said the uncut gems were "blood diamonds" Mr Taylor gave Ms Campbell after a 1997 dinner.

Fazul Abdullah Mohammed's South Africa passport 'fake'

The South African passport carried by senior al-Qaeda militant Fazul Abdullah Mohammed was a forgery, South African officials say.

Mr Mohammed was reported killed last week in Somalia in a shootout with police in the capital, Mogadishu.

Somali sources said he was carrying $40,000 in cash and a passport in the name of Daniel Robinson when he died.

Experts say corruption in South Africa has made it easy for terrorists to get documents there.

South African officials say that following extensive domestic and international media coverage of the report that the passport was South African they launched a thorough investigation.

After receiving a copy of the passport, they checked the ID number that appeared on the document.

Officials said checks were also made to determine when Mr Mohammed entered or left South Africa.

    They now say "without equivocation":
    • The passport was not issued by any lawful South African authority charged with the responsibility for the issuance of passports
    • No correlation existed between the ID number appearing on the fake passport and the fake passport number
    • The South African Movement Control System had no record of any movement in or out of the country at any port of entry by the militant using the fake passport.
The Minister of Home Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, welcomed the report and expresses the hope that the outcome would lay the issue of the security of South African documents to rest.

Bangladesh academic's husband held 'after beating her'

Police in Bangladesh have arrested a husband whom they suspect of "mercilessly beating" his university lecturer wife.

The accused man, Syeed Hasan Sumon, is reported to have assaulted Assistant Professor Rumana Manjur so severely that she may lose both eyes.

The case has attracted much interest in Bangladesh, where reports of middle class domestic violence are unusual.

Mr Sumon has not so far commented on the allegations made against him.
His wife says she was assaulted several times after returning to Bangladesh in May from Canada, where she had been completing a Fulbright Scholarship.

"He pushed his fingers into my eyes," she told journalists, "and dragged me by my hair on the floor."

She said that that at one stage Mr Sumon - who evaded capture for several days - repeatedly gnawed her nose, face and throat.

The failure to arrest Mr Sumon for so long has been criticised by the country's High Court, which has ordered police to appear before them on Thursday morning and explain why.

Doctors say that Prof Manjur has definitely lost one eye and is in danger of losing another. She is now receiving treatment from a specialist eye surgeon in India.

It has been an action-packed seven months at sea for sailors aboard the USS Carl Vinson -- which included the historic sea burial of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. On Wednesday morning, the carrier returned home.
During its deployment, the USS Carl Vinson dealt with pirates, a jet engine that caught fire, and, most prominently, a historic event when bin Laden's body was placed on the ship before his burial at sea.

The moon looms in partial eclipse, framed by an arch at Rome's ancient Colosseum on Wednesday

This eclipse was notable for several reasons: The moon went right through the center of Earth's shadow, which means the total phase went on for 100 minutes — the longest duration since the year 2000. Also, last week's volcanic eruption in Chile was thought to have put enough sulfur in the air to lend a dusky, coppery color to the moon during totality. The reddish shade certainly didn't disappoint, as you can see in these pictures.
