Libya unrest: Rebels renew fight in oil port of Zawiya

Fighting has resumed in the western Libyan city of Zawiya between rebels and forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The town was seized by rebels in March, but government forces recaptured it in less than two weeks of heavy fighting.

The port city, about 30km (18 miles) west of Tripoli is the site of an important oil terminal.

Col Gaddafi's forces are also struggling against rebels in the western port city of Misrata.

Syrian unrest: 'Heavy fighting' in Jisr al-Shughour

Syrian state media have reported "heavy" fighting in the northern town of Jisr al-Shughour after security forces launched a full-scale assault.

A BBC Arabic correspondent embedded with troops said they entered the town at dawn, after which clashes erupted and sources said three people had died.

The government says it is trying to restore order after 120 security personnel were killed last week.

Residents say they died after a mutiny and fighting between security forces.

They are like nearly 90,000 people who remain in shelters after being displaced by the March tsunami, with another 12,100 living in temporary houses, according to Japanese media, which cited statistics from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Jenson Button wins stunning Canadian Grand Prix

Jenson Button took a stunning victory in a dramatic, rain-affected Canadian Grand Prix by passing Sebastian Vettel on the last lap of an absorbing race.
Vettel's Red Bull ran wide under pressure to gift the win to Button, who recovered after a collision with McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Red Bull's Mark Webber was third to deprive Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher of a podium place.

Vettel now leads the championship by 60 points from Button.

An incident-packed race saw the safety car used five times and included a two-hour stoppage for heavy rain. Button himself made five pit stops on his way to victory as well as an enforced visit to the pits for a drive-through penalty for speeding under the safety car.

An emotional Button described the win as possibly the best of his career.

He said: "I really don't know what to say, it's been a very emotional race. The incident with Lewis - I couldn't see anything and I've apologised to him.

"It was really a fight from then on, but I kept on pushing and I managed to get past Seb at the end. Another great win for me and possibly my best."

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: "What a race. He is driving fantastically and we know he deserves it and hope everyone else does too.

"He just attacked and attacked and delivered a fantastic race. We knew he had to put pressure on Sebastian, and Sebastian made a mistake. From Jenson, that's the stuff of champions, that's the stuff of dreams."

Vettel conceded ruefully: "If you have it in your hands and give it away it is not the sweetest feeling."

BBC F1 commentator Martin Brundle said: "At one point we were wondering if Button would catch the Hispanias before the race restarted under the safety car and now he's won the race! That is one of the races of his life and the best grand prix of a spectacular career."

Co-commentator David Coulthard added: "What a fantastic drive from Jenson Button - it looked like it was all lost and he's well aware you count the winners at the chequered flag."

Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will return to Queen's Club on Monday after the final was washed out for only the third time in the tournament's history on Sunday.

The Aegon Championships final will now take place at 1230 BST on Monday, with tickets available for £10 on the gate or via the tournament's website.

There was no play whatsoever on Sunday, despite the scheduled start time being brought forward to 1200 BST, as persistent rain prevented a ball being struck.

Turkey ruling party wins election with reduced majority

Near-complete results from Turkey's election show the Justice and Development Party (AKP) of PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won a third term.

With 99% of ballots counted the AKP had 50% of the vote, which local media said translated to 326 seats in parliament.

But that would be 41 seats short of the two-thirds majority needed to amend the country's constitution unilaterally.

In his victory speech, Mr Erdogan said the AKP would "discuss the new constitution with opposition parties".

"The people gave us a message to build the new constitution through consensus and negotiation," he told supporters in Ankara.

"We will be humble. We have never displayed pride or boasted."

The secular Republican People's Party (CHP) had 26% of vote and the far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) 13%.

Britons held as 'spies' in Eritrea have been released

Four Britons held in Eritrea on spying and terrorism charges since December have been released, the Foreign Office (FCO) has said.

The four men - who all worked for the same security firm - are believed to be on their way back to the UK.

The FCO said it was very grateful to the government of Qatar "for helping facilitate their return".

But it said it remained concerned that the Eritreans had not responded to requests for consular access.

The four men had been on board a merchant vessel that stopped at a port in the east African country to pick up supplies when they were detained in December 2010.

The Eritrean government said the men were detained as they tried to leave Eritrean waters without permission and searches then uncovered a weapons cache.

But private security firm Protection Vessels International (PVI) said they were en route to provide security for ships in the region.

China unrest: 25 arrested after clashes with police

Police in southern China say they have arrested 25 people after clashes between residents and security forces near the city of Guangzhou.

A crowd threw bottles and bricks at police after a dispute between two street vendors and local security.

Riot police are also patrolling the city of Lichuan in central China after crowds attacked government offices.

Protests and clashes with police are common in China over corruption and land seizures by local officials.

In the Guangzhou incident, reports said people in the town of Xintang blocked traffic and damaged vehicles as the dispute between police and two street vendors, a migrant couple, escalated.

Police later seized control of the area, which is in southern China's manufacturing heartland and is home to migrants working in a number of textile factories.

Jordan King Abdullah vows to allow elected cabinets

King Abdullah of Jordan has bowed to demands for reform, saying future cabinets will be formed according to an elected parliamentary majority.

In a televised speech marking his 12th year as Jordan's ruler, King Abdullah promised to relinquish his right to appoint prime ministers and cabinets.

It is the first time he has made such a concession publicly to his citizens, and follows six months of protests.

But he did not say when exactly this would take place.

It is believed the king first wants to see Jordan's splintered 33 political parties merge into three main political blocs from which cabinets can be formed.

Jordanians taking part in the mainly peaceful protests have been demanding more political say and that the monarch loosen his absolute grip on power, which includes appointing prime ministers and cabinets.

NZ quake: Christchurch hit by magnitude-5.0 aftershocks

Several serious aftershocks have hit the New Zealand city of Christchurch, almost four months after a quake that killed 181 people.

A magnitude 5.2 quake struck at Taylors Mistake beach, 9.6km (six miles) from the city centre.

A second quake, magnitude 6.0, struck an hour and 20 minutes later, shaking buildings and causing injuries.

A number of people suffered minor injures; boulders have been reported to be tumbling down hillsides.

A week ago, Christchurch was also hit by two shocks which cleared shop shelves and increased nervousness in the city.

A total of 181 people died in the 6.3-magnitude quake in February, which also destroyed hundreds of buildings.

Mayor Bob Parker told Radio New Zealand there were new fears for Christchurch Cathedral.

"Thank God we had evacuated the red zone," he said, in a reference to the centre of the city which remains closed off.

"We are being enveloped with dust. It is very, very scary.

"There has been a report of a further collapse of the remnants of the Christchurch Cathedral.

Alex McLeish resigns as Birmingham manager

Alex McLeish has resigned as manager of Birmingham City.

Birmingham won the Carling Cup in February but went on to be relegated from the Premier League at the end of the past campaign.

The club's board had stated that McLeish's job was "safe" in the aftermath of their drop into the Championship but the Scot has now decided to leave of his own accord.

Aston Villa are already being suggested as a possible destination for McLeish.
"Birmingham City Football Club can confirm that Alex McLeish has resigned as manager," said a statement on the club's website.

World vaccine funding summit seeks donations in London

Countries meeting in London are to be asked to give an extra £2.3bn ($3.7bn) by 2015 to fund vaccines against two of the biggest killers of children - pneumonia and diarrhoeal disease.

The Global Alliance on Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) says the money could help save 4m lives in four years.

Its conference is being led by UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Microsoft tycoon Bill Gates.

Mr Cameron will pledge to increase UK funding for global vaccination.

The UK has already committed more resources - £2bn over 30 years - than any other nation, including the US.

Prescription pills blamed for 'Pharmageddon' in Kentucky

Sarah Shay and Savannah Kissick were school friends in Morehead, both addicted to an array of perfectly legal drugs.

Sarah died in 2006, at the age of 19. Savannah followed three years later, aged 22. Both victims of an epidemic of prescription pill abuse sweeping parts of America.

When their mothers reel off the names together, they make them sound like weapons.

"Xanax. Klonopin. Oxycodone. Hydrocodone."

Earlier this year, the White House described the epidemic as the country's fastest growing drug problem, accounting for more accidental overdoses than the combined total from heroin and crack cocaine in the 1970s and 80s.

Father 'run down and killed by thief who stole his van'

Charles Bunyasi, 49, was delivering flowers on Saturday morning when the thief leapt into his white Ford Transit van and sped off.


Mr Bunyasi, who worked as a delivery driver at weekends for extra money to support his family, was run over by the van as he tried to stop the thief.


The father-of-three was left for dead with "catastrophic injuries" in the tree-lined street near Coulsdon Manor Golf Club in the commuter village of Coulsdon, near Croydon, south London.


Mr Bunyasi, who lived with is wife and children in Mitcham, south London, was rushed to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, south London, but died at 5.45pm on Saturday afternoon with his wife at his bedside.


Police arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the murder after he handed himself in yesterday.

India police find Maoist mass grave in Jharkhand

A mass grave with bodies of 14 Maoist rebels has been found in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, police say.

The grave was found on a hill in a forest on the border of Ranchi and Khunti districts - a Maoist stronghold.

Police said they believed the rebels died in clashes with the security forces and were buried by the Maoists who generally do not let troops take away the bodies of their fighters.

The rebels say they are fighting for the rights of the tribals and the poor.

They are active in several eastern and central states.

In one of the most deadly attacks last year, rebels killed 74 policemen in the neighbouring state of Chhattisgarh last year.

India's prime minister has described the Maoist insurgency as the country's biggest internal security challenge.

India: Mumbai journalists protest against killing

Journalists in the western Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) have held a protest against the killing of a prominent crime reporter on Saturday.

Jyotirmoy Dey, who worked for Mid Day newspaper, was shot dead by four men on motorcycles.

The police said the killing had been carried out by a professional gang, and have launched an investigation.

Reports said that Mr Dey, 56, had recently reported on an "oil mafia" which had been pilfering fuel.

Mr Dey was returning home on his motorcycle on Saturday afternoon when he was shot dead by men on motorcycles, who sped away after the incident, police said.

He was cremated in Mumbai on Sunday.

Pakistani soldiers killed in blast

At least three Pakistani soldiers have been killed when a roadside bomb exploded in the restive Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

The bomb struck soldiers who were on a patrol to check for mines ahead of a military convoy in South Waziristan.

Three soldiers were wounded in the attack, one report said.

Tension has been increasing along the border region following reports that Pakistan is preparing to carry out a limited offensive in North Waziristan.

Monday's attack involving a remotely-triggered improvised explosive device (IED) took place in the Ladha area of South Waziristan.

Libya 'repulses rebels' in Zawiya

The Libyan government says it has repulsed a fresh attempt by rebels to take the western town of Zawiya.

Rebels said there had been heavy fighting in the centre but journalists taken to the town said it appeared calm and under government control.

In March government forces retook the town, 30km (18 miles) west of Tripoli, after two weeks of heavy fighting.

Separately the BBC has learned that the rebels are smuggling weapons through Tunisia to fight Col Muammar Gaddafi.

Robert Rock wins maiden Tour title at Italian Open

Robert Rock ended his nine-year wait for a first European Tour title with victory at the Italian Open in Turin.

The Englishman, who held the lead from the first day, carded a final-round five-under 67 to finish on -21 overall.

Compatriot Gary Boyd holed eight birdies in a blistering round of 66 to finish one shot behind Rock alongside Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen.

Rock will play in his first US Open this week after securing his spot in qualifying at Walton Heath.

The 34-year-old credited his victory at the Royal Park Roveri to his improved putting skills thanks to an old coaching manual.

"My putting had been letting me down so when I read the book I decided to use some of the tips in it," said Rock. "It helped me considerably."

Harrison Frazar pips Robert Karlsson in St Jude play-off

Harrison Frazar won his maiden PGA Tour title at the St Jude Classic after beating Robert Karlsson in a dramatic play-off in Memphis.

Swede Karlsson misjudged a chip to the green on the 12th, the third hole in the play-off, to card a bogey five.

But American Frazar, who had been close to losing his Tour card, kept his composure to make par and qualify for next week's US Open in Maryland.

England's world number two Lee Westwood finished six under, seven off the lead.

The defending champion produced his best round of the week, a four-under 66, to finish in a tie for 11th.

Frazar, who turns 40 next month, won for the first time in 355 attempts having looked as though he had spurned his chance when he bogeyed the final hole.

The American found the water with his approach and finished level with overnight leader Karlsson on 13 under after carding a three-under-par 67 to the Swede's 68.

That gave Karlsson a second chance but like last year, when he lost out to Westwood in a play-off, the 41-year-old failed to take it.
