Russian colonel who killed Chechen girl is shot dead

A Russian colonel who was jailed for murdering a Chechen teenager has been shot dead in central Moscow.

Yuri Budanov was killed on Friday by an unidentified gunman on Komsomolsky Prospekt, a busy avenue in the capital, state prosecutors said.

In 2003 a court upheld his 10-year jail sentence for strangling an 18-year-old girl in war-torn Chechnya in 2000.

But he was released early from jail in January 2009 - a move that angered human rights activists.

Russian media say the gunman, wearing a blue jacket and hood, attacked Budanov at about 1230 (0830 GMT), shooting him six times with a pistol, then fled by car.

The Mitsubishi Lancer getaway car was later found abandoned and on fire, the reports said. A pistol and silencer were found inside.

New title for Duke of Edinburgh as he turns 90

The Queen has conferred the title and office of Lord High Admiral of the Navy on HRH Duke of Edinburgh on the occasion of his 90th birthday.

Earlier the duke told the BBC he was "winding down" and reducing his workload as a senior royal.

In a BBC interview the Queen's husband said: "I reckon I've done my bit."
The Queen has been head of the navy since 1964 but has given the title to the duke, who gave up his naval career to support her as sovereign.

Prince Philip joined the navy in 1939 and was the best cadet at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth that year.

But he quit in 1951 after marrying the then Princess Elizabeth.

On Friday Prince Philip hosted an event for the Royal National Institute for Deaf People at Buckingham Palace, during which he was given a set of ear defenders as a birthday present. Receiving the gift, he joked: "Can you get Radio 3 on this?"

Ironically the charity used the event to drop its royal title and rebrand itself as Action on Hearing Loss.

Nigel Farage death threat crash pilot given community order

A pilot found guilty of threatening to kill UKIP leader Nigel Farage following a plane crash has been given a two-year supervised community order.

A jury found Justin Adams guilty of making five threats relating to Mr Farage and crash investigator Martin James after the accident in May 2010.

The court heard the recording of a phone call where Adams claimed to have a 9mm pistol.

Adams, 46, of Oxfordshire, said his threats were "a cry for help".

Mr Farage said he intends to "draw a line under this whole affair".

In a statement, he added: "Today's sentencing marks the end of a sad and tragic episode.

"As I have stated previously, it is has always been my belief that Mr Adams was in need of help and support from our mental health services, yet he never got the level of care that he needed."
