Waffle the Lakeland terrier has nosed out a massive pile of old footballs, tennis balls and beach balls from bushes and grass verges over the years. The clever pooch drags each one back to bemused owner Sarah Bennett, who now has an entire garden full of his trophies. Sarah, of Exeter, Devon, decided to use Waffle's ball skills to raise cash for animal welfare and urged strangers to donate a pound every time he finds one

A miniature mascot (named 2.0 (two-point-oh)) soared to 33.5km into Earth's atmosphere, three times higher than the altitude of a commercial jet, thanks to a weather balloon. The National Space Centre, based in Leicester, sent the orange toy flying to mark their 13th birthday. A video captured the two-hour ascent and also captured the moment the balloon burst, sending 2.0 hurtling back towards Earth. He eventually landed in a field near Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire, 16 miles away from the space centre. Josh Barker, of the Space Communications Team, said: '2.0 was at a comparable height to Felix Baumgartner's flight earlier this year. Space officially starts at 100km (62 miles) above the Earth's surface - this is called the Karman line. Our balloon reached 33.5km so not quite space - about a third of the way.'

Israel has carried out more air strikes on the Gaza Strip, following dozens of rockets fired by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. Hamas said it had fired rockets to respond to "Zionist aggression", after accusing Israel of killing five of its fighters. Israel denied the claim. The Cassini spacecraft has captured three magnificent Saturn sightings all at the same time: Saturn's north polar vortex and hexagon along with its expansive rings. The hexagon, which is wider than two Earths, owes its appearance to the jet stream that forms its perimeter. The jet stream forms a six-lobed, stationary wave which wraps around the north polar regions at a latitude of roughly 77 degrees North. This view looks toward the sunlit side of the rings from about 37 degrees above the ringplane. The image was taken with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on April 2, 2014 using a spectral filter which preferentially admits wavelengths of near-infrared light centered at 752 nanometers. The view was obtained at a distance of approximately 1.4 million miles (2.2 million kilometers) from Saturn and at a Sun-Saturn-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 43 degrees. Image scale is 81 miles (131 kilometers) per pixel
