Bullets casings are seen where a sniper loyal to Muammar Gaddafi took position during a fierce battle with rebels on Tripoli street in central Misrata May 22, 2011. Residents of the battle-scarred city of Misrata in west Libya searched for food from poorly stocked shops on Sunday and rebels stripped weapons from the carcasses of Gaddafi's armor. Distant blasts rumbled through the eerily quiet roads of Misrata, Libya's third biggest city and the scene of some of the fiercest fighting since an uprising began in mid-February.

Movistar rider Tondo killed in car incident

Spanish Movistar Team rider Xavier Tondo was killed on Monday when he was involved in an incident with a garage door on his way to training near Granada, his team said.

"The 32-year-old Catalan rider was in his car on the way to training when he suffered the incident with the door of the garage," the team said in a statement on their website (www.movistarteam.com).

More information would be published when it became available, the statement added.

Tondo had an impressive 2010 season, winning a stage on the Paris-Nice race and finishing sixth in the Tour of Spain. He won the 2011 Tour of Castilla and Leon.

Earlier this year, he blew the whistle on a doping ring when he alerted authorities after receiving emails in which he was offered banned substances.

Movistar said they would not withdraw their team from the Giro d'Italia, which resumes on Tuesday after a rest day.

"We decided the best thing to do would be to honour Xavi on the bike," team manager Eusebio Unzue said in a media release

The eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano sends thousands of tonnes of volcanic ash into the sky on May 23, 2011 above Iceland. The cloud has forced the closure of Icelandic airspace and spread fears of a repeat of the global travel chaos that was caused by last year's Icelandic eruption, although authorities inisist that this Grimsvotn poses a lesser threat.

Belarusian drivers wait in a queue to fill their tanks with fuel a petrol station before a price hike in Minsk, Monday, May 23, 2011. Prices of fuel will rise up to 20 percent by Tuesday, according to local media reports.

Customers pass by empty shelves in an electronic equipment shop in Minsk, Belarus, 23 May 2011. Booming demand for certain commodities and growing prices at Belarussian shops result from instability on the currency market.

People queue up to buy foreign currency outside an exchange office of Belarusbank in Minsk May 23, 2011. The Belarussian rouble strengthened on the interbank market on Monday, bankers said, extending gains made last week after the government announced asset sale plans and Russia said Minsk could get a loan in June.
