Aerial view shows the eruption of the volcano Grimsvotn in the south-east of Iceland, May 21. Iceland closed its main international airport May 22 following the eruption of a volcano in the south-east of the country, aviation authorities said. The decision also affected other Icelandic airports, while transatlantic flights would be diverted south of Iceland, according to a spokesperson of the aviation authority Isavia. The Grimsvotn volcano began to erupt on Saturday, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said. But the prevailing winds suggested that the Grimsvotn ash cloud would in the coming days blow north and not affect mainland Europe.

Vettel holds off Hamilton to win Spanish Grand Prix
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4003.jpg
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel held off a stern challenge from McLaren's Lewis Hamilton to win a thrilling Spanish Grand Prix.
It was Vettel's fourth win in five races, but the huge pace advantage Red Bull showed in qualifying vanished and Hamilton pressured him throughout.
Hamilton's team-mate Jenson Button made one fewer stop in taking third.
Ferrari's Fernando Alonso led the first 18 laps but faded to fifth behind Red Bull's Mark Webber.
"That was an immense fight," said BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard and Vettel's pleasure at holding off Hamilton's challenge was clear from the world champion's thrilled response to his team's congratulations on the slowing down lap. "Yabba-dabba-dee," the 23-year-old screamed.

Carlo Ancelotti is sacked as Chelsea manager
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4068.jpg
Chelsea have sacked manager Carlo Ancelotti after he ended his second season at the club without a trophy.
He was dismissed following the 1-0 loss to Everton, as the west Londoners finished second in the Premier League.
The 51-year-old had one more year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge.
A club statement read: "This season's performances have fallen short of expectations and the club feels the time is right to make this change ahead of next season's preparations."
Speculation had been mounting that Ancelotti would be sacked following Chelsea's first season without a trophy in three years.

Pakistan: Troops 'end attack on Mehran naval air base'
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4069.jpg
Pakistani troops have ended a siege by militants who attacked a naval base in the city of Karachi, navy sources say.
The troops are now said to be "mopping up" after the raid, which has left at least 12 soldiers dead.
The attackers were said to have been holed up in an office building with hostages after storming the Mehran naval aviation base overnight.
The Pakistan Taliban says the raid was to avenge Osama Bin Laden's killing by US special forces on 2 May.
"It was the revenge of martyrdom of Osama Bin Laden. It was the proof that we are still united and powerful," Ehsanullah Ehsan told Reuters news agency.
They have carried out several attacks since then.

Princess Beatrice's hat sold by eBay auction
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/3300.jpg
Princess Beatrice's royal wedding hat has been sold on auction site eBay for £81,100.01.
The dramatic creation by Philip Treacy has been likened to a Turkey Twizzler, a lavatory seat and a pretzel.
The 22-year-old princess wore it to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton last month, and a Facebook page was set up in its honour.
The auction on eBay ended on Sunday, with the proceeds going to charities Unicef and Children in Crisis.
The identity of the winning bidder has not yet been revealed.
The princess commented on the auction page: "I've been amazed by the amount of attention the hat has attracted.
"It's a wonderful opportunity to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities.
"I hope whoever wins the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have."

Missouri: Tornado batters Joplin, at least 30 dead
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4070.jpg
As many as 30 people are reported killed after a tornado tore through the city of Joplin in the US state of Missouri, officials say.
The town suffered a "direct hit" from the tornado and parts of the city have been devastated, local media says.
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency and warned more storms are on the way.
Last month, tornadoes and storms killed at least 350 people in Alabama and six other southern states.
John Miller, a freelance photographer for the Springfield News-Leader newspaper, described widespread damage in Joplin.
"The Home Depot is levelled. The Walmart is destroyed. Gas stations, buildings.
Everywhere I could see was either heavily damaged or completely destroyed," he said.
"I saw firefighters and paramedics pull a young girl out of a car at the Home Depot. Part of the building had fallen on the car."

Sudan: UN urges Khartoum to pullout from Abyei region
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4071.jpg
UN Security Council envoys have urged North Sudan to "withdraw immediately" its troops from the contested Abyei region on the border with South Sudan.
The call was made by the UN diplomats who are on a tour of Sudan.
South Sudan said the Abyei takeover was an act of war, saying civilians and southern soldiers were killed.
South Sudan is due to become independent in July, but Abyei's status remains to be determined after a referendum on its future was shelved.
People in the Southern capital of Juba are worried and there is a grim mood on the streets of the capital, the BBC's Peter Martell in South Sudan reports.
The North said it acted after 22 of its men were killed in a southern ambush earlier this week.

Spanish socialists suffer heavy election losses
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4072.jpg
Spain's governing Socialist party has suffered heavy losses in local and regional elections.
With 91% of municipal votes counted, the centre-right Popular Party (PP) had almost a 10-percentage point lead, the interior ministry said.
Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero conceded defeat but ruled out early general elections.
Voting took place amid mass protests against high unemployment and the government's handling of the economy.
Young demonstrators holding sit-ins in Madrid and other cities said rallies would continue for another week.
Mr Zapatero said three years of economic crisis had taken their toll.
"It destroyed thousands of jobs. It is a crisis that had profound effects on citizens' morale. I know that many Spaniards suffer great hardship and fear for their futures," he said.
"Today, without doubt, they expressed their discontent," he added.
However, he vowed to pursue job-creating reforms until the end of his mandate. At this point, a general election must be held by March of next year.

Rosemary Nelson murder inquiry to publish findings
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4081.jpg
The findings of a public inquiry into allegations of police collusion in the murder of solicitor Rosemary Nelson in Lurgan will be published later.
She died after a bomb exploded under her car near her home in March 1999.
The family of the solicitor claimed the police and government ignored a series of warnings about threats against her.
She had become a hate figure for hardline loyalists - and reportedly some police officers - because of some of the clients she represented.
They included leading republican Colin Duffy, who is currently in prison charged with the murders of two soldiers in Antrim two years ago.
Another client was the Garvaghy Road Residents Group, which opposed an Orange Order march in Portadown.
The solicitor and a number of legal and human rights groups had raised concerns about her safety over a two-year period before she was killed.
They claimed she had been threatened by RUC officers as well as loyalist paramilitaries.
Within hours of the bombing, those groups and her family alleged there had been police collusion in her murder.
On Monday afternoon, the government will make public the verdict of a 15-month long public inquiry that examined those allegations

Surrey facelift woman awarded £6m damages
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4083.jpg
A woman has won more than £6m in damages against a plastic surgeon who she said "played God" with her life.
Penny Johnson, from Godstone, Surrey, brought the High Court case against Le Roux Fourie who she said carried out "experimental surgery" in 2003.
The businesswoman said she suffered nerve damage in a facelift, which led to her financial and IT consultancy business going into administration.
Mr Fourie admitted liability but denied the surgery was experimental.
At the High Court, sitting in London, Mrs Johnson asked Mr Justice Owen to award her a proportion of the £54m she said was her potential loss, as a 50% shareholder, when Bishop Cavanagh Ltd failed in 2009.
She said the stress of the litigation had made her condition worse.
The judge gave his ruling in the case on Monday, awarding her £6,190,884.92.
During the hearing, Mrs Johnson said her face was constantly contracting.

Privacy injunctions unsustainable, says Cameron
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4084.jpg
Privacy rulings affecting newspapers are "unsustainable" and unfair on the press, the prime minister has said.
David Cameron told ITV1's Daybreak the law should be reviewed to "catch up with how people consume media today".
His comments came after Scotland's Sunday Herald became the UK's first mainstream paper to name a footballer who had taken out a privacy injunction.
The player, who began proceedings against ex-Big Brother star Imogen Thomas, has been named on Twitter.
Users of the social networking site have reacted to the footballer's attempt to find out who is putting information about him on the website by posting new messages online.
Mr Cameron told Daybreak: "It is rather unsustainable, this situation, where newspapers can't print something that clearly everybody else is talking about.

Iceland volcanic ash cloud set to reach UK
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/4086.jpg
An ash cloud from the Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland is expected to reach the UK by the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Met Office has said.
It does not necessarily mean there will be airspace closures but makes flight disruption more likely, it said.
The cloud is predicted to affect parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
The event comes a year after ash from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano spread across Europe, causing huge disruption.
