There are a few bands losing members this week: Stealers Wheel, Hawkwind, Nazareth to name but three.

This is an almost famous, but I reckon he deserves a spot on this thread.

Man Who Inspired ‘The Terminal’ Dies in Paris Airport

An Iranian man who inspired the Tom Hanks film The Terminal has died at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport where he lived 18 years of his life.

AP reports that Merhan Karimi Nasseri died after a heart attack in the airport’s Terminal 2F around midday Saturday, citing an official with the Paris airport authority. He was reportedly treated at the scene but sadly passed away.

Karimi Nasseri’s life story is literally the stuff of a blockbuster movie after he ended up living in Charles de Gaulle Airport’s Terminal 1 from 1988 until 2006, initially because he lack residency papers but later simply because he liked it there.

In 1999 he was granted refugee status and the right to remain in France.

“He no longer wants to leave the airport,” his lawyer Christian Bourguet said at the time. “He’s scared of going.”

The airport official who spoke with AP said he had started living in the airport again just a few weeks ago.

Karimi Nasseri’s story was the inspiration for the 2004 Steven Spielberg film The Terminal which sees Tom Hanks’ character get trapped at New York’s JFK Airport when his home country collapses into revolution.

Karimi Nasseri was 77 years old.

^RIP Mr. Nasseri. I don't know his whole life story, but he must have been lonely towards the end of his life? He must have returned to living at the airport (a few weeks ago) since it was his safe place.

Generous of them considering it made at least $219 million worldwide.

I wonder if he ever got to see it?

Wilko Johnson dies aged 75 The Guardian

The Dr Feelgood guitarist died at home on 21 November, his family confirmed
Wilko Johnson, the guitarist for Dr Feelgood and a formative influence on the British punk movement, has died aged 75. A statement posted to his official social media accounts said he died at home on 21 November.
Johnson was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer in 2013 and elected not to receive chemotherapy. That year, he was told he had nine to 10 months left to live.

Nevertheless, in 2014 he released the album Going Back Home, a collaboration with the Who’s Roger Daltrey. Later that year, he announced that he was cancer-free following a major operation to remove a three kilogram tumour.
“Now, I’m spending my time gradually coming to terms with the idea that my death is not imminent, that I am going to live on,” he said at the year’s Q awards.

Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand was among those to pay tribute to Johnson. “His unique, wired playing and stage presence thrilled and inspired many guitarists, myself included,” he tweeted. “When I interviewed him a few years ago, he was bright, thoughtful and an astonishing story teller. His presence will be felt for many more years.”

Johnson was born John Peter Wilkinson in Canvey Island, Essex, in 1947. He began playing guitar as a teenager, but his career began in earnest in 1971, when he formed Dr Feelgood with singer Lee Brilleaux, bass player John B Sparks, and drummer John Martin.

The band went on to become mainstays of the British pub rock scene, and Johnson quickly became known for his distinctive style of guitar playing, which utilised fingerpicking in order to play riffs or solos while playing rhythm, as well as his flamboyant performances, which often featured him raising his guitar to his shoulders like a gun.

Dr Feelgood’s intense, brutal take on R&B was a major influence on the British punk music that would emerge in the 70s and 80s. Johnson remained with Dr Feelgood for their first four albums, the latter three of which charted in the top 20 of the UK albums chart, before inter-band conflict led him to part ways with the group.

After leaving Dr Feelgood, Johnson formed Solid Senders, who released one album on Virgin in 1978, and briefly joined Ian Dury’s outfit the Blockheads, performing on their 1980 album Laughter.
Shortly afterwards, he began to focus on the Wilko Johnson Band, his longest-running musical project, with whom he would go on to release seven albums over the next three decades, including the 1981 debut Ice on the Motorway, 1988’s Barbed Wire Blues and, most recently, 2018’s Blow Your Mind.

Outside of music, Johnson released one book – his 2012 autobiography Looking Back at Me, co-written with Zoë Howe – and appeared as a guest star on Game of Thrones playing Ser Ilyn Payne, a mute executioner.
On Twitter, musicians shared their admiration for Johnson and his work. Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre wrote that Johnson “fought the good fight, and had a damn good run. When they said it was over, you came back stronger,” while Nottingham post-punk duo Sleaford Mods wrote that Johnson was “the unsung inventor of Post Mod, Mod”.

Wilko Johnson obituary | Wilko Johnson | The Guardian

The film-maker Julien Temple described the musician Wilko Johnson, who has died aged 75, as “one of the great English eccentrics, a great national treasure waiting to be discovered”.

It was thanks partly to Temple’s 2009 documentary, Oil City Confidential, which traced the history of the Canvey Island band Dr Feelgood and Johnson’s role in it, that he enjoyed renewed acclaim towards the end of his life.
Not that fans of Dr Feelgood in the band’s mid-1970s heyday needed reminding of Johnson’s accomplishments.

He was never a guitar virtuoso in the vein of Jeff Beck or Eric Clapton, but he was one of the most distinctive British players in the history of rock’n’roll, having perfected a hair-trigger style that combined stark, percussive chords with pin-sharp riffs.

To that, Johnson added an intimidating stage presence. Invariably clad in a black suit, eyes staring out across the audience like searchlights, he roved around the stage with robotic remorselessness.............

Fame and Flashdance singer Irene Cara has died at the age of 63.

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-untitled-jpg

The American singer and actress was best known for her title track in the 1980 film Fame, as well as co-writing and singing the smash hit Flashdance... What a Feeling, for which she won an Oscar and a Grammy.

She later starred in films opposite Clint Eastwood and Tatum O'Neal.

Cara's publicist, who announced her death, said she died at home in Florida but the cause is "currently unknown".

Born in 1959 in the Bronx, New York City, Cara was the youngest of five children and started her career on Spanish-language TV. Her father was Puerto Rican and her mother, Cuban-American.

Having recorded music as a child, both in Spanish and English, she went on to appear in a number of on-and-off Broadway musicals.

But it was in 1980 that Cara shot to fame when she bagged the role of Coco Hernandez - and sung Fame's title track.

Her performance earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 1981 Golden Globe Awards.

Cara later co-wrote and sang the vocals for Flashdance… What A Feeling, from the 1983 blockbuster Flashdance, and won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance as well as an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Flashdance went on to become the third-highest-grossing film of 1983.

    Judith A Moose,
Cara's publicist, praised her as a "beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films".

She also said Cara had been working on forthcoming projects when she died, which she and the singer's manager now plan to finish.

"She'd want that," Ms Moose said of her client via her official Twitter page.

hard to believe he's gone and only 52, a real gentle giant - RIP Doddie

Doddie Weir: Obituary for iconic Scotland and British and Irish Lions lock

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-download-jpg

The images of Doddie Weir's playing years have a glorious consistency; he is soaring at a line-out or carrying the ball like a mad giraffe, as Bill McLaren once described him. He is a towering, smiling giant. Mischievous, charismatic, funny.

All of those freeze-frames and all of that video tell us what a presence he was on the rugby field.

From Melrose, where he won a league title as a young man, to Newcastle Falcons where he won another. To Scotland for a decade and the Lions in South Africa - his tour cut short by a horrible act of foul play by a local hatchet man - and back to the Borders, where it started and where it finished.

For every minute he was 6ft 7in of joyous chaos.

There's a reluctance in spaces like this to refer to sports people by their first name or their nickname - he was christened George - because you don't want to appear overly familiar, but there are exceptions.

Even people who didn't know him felt like they did. Even those who were never in his company automatically referred to him as Doddie and considered him a mate.

Some folk just have it, whatever 'it' is. And Doddie was one of those. He brought out the best in people. He saw it as a personal mission to make you smile and leave his company feeling better about yourself.

There's a picture of a 20-year-old Doddie celebrating that league title with Melrose when league titles really, really mattered in Scottish rugby. It was 1990 and Jim Telfer was the coach. Telfer always said the triumph with Melrose meant more to him than the Grand Slam with Scotland that followed a week later, a victory he helped create as Ian McGeechan's assistant.

Alley was undergoing treatment at the Moffitt Cancer Center, whose staff her children, True and Lillie Parker, thanked in the statement.

“She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead,” the statement continued. “As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”

    Cripes, Johnny's bought it.

The last survivor of the World War Two Dambusters has died at the age of 101.

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-untitled-jpg

Sq Ldr George "Johnny" Johnson, was a bomb-aimer in the 617 Squadron, which destroyed key dams in Germany's industrial heartland during the war.

His family said he died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday.

Celebrating his 100th birthday in November last year, he told the BBC: "I've had a very lucky life in every respect."

Mr Johnson, who was born in Lincolnshire and lived in Bristol, was just 21 when he took part in the 1943 operation, which involved experimental bouncing bombs that were targeted at dams in the Ruhr Valley, releasing huge quantities of water into areas used by Germany for war production.

It would probably be classed as a war crime nowadays.
