Taylor Hawkins: Drugs found in body of late Foo Fighters drummer

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins had marijuana, opioids and other drugs in his system before he died, Colombian investigators say.

Hawkins, 50, died at a hotel in Bogota, with the band due to play at a music festival this weekend.

Local officials said an ambulance was sent to the hotel after a man reported having chest pains.

The cause of death remains unknown, and investigators did not say if the mix of drugs was a factor.

They said they were working "to achieve full clarity of the facts that led to [Hawkins'] death".

    Antidepressants. Very "rock and roll".

The report from the attorney general of Colombia came in a tweet which said that the 50-year-old musician had antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids in his system, along with THC. It did not further specify the drugs that had been found, and the attorney general’s statement avoided using the word “overdose.”
A report in a major Colombian magazine, Semana, went further, however, reporting that unnamed authorities told its reporters that heroin was part of the drug cocktail in Hawkins’ system, and that he was found to have an enlarged heart.
Semana reported that “forensic doctors were shocked by the size of the drummer’s heart,” at more than 600 grams, and believe that was a factor in Hawkins quickly succumbing to “a cocktail of narcotics.”

Waterman's acting career spanned 60 years, starting with his childhood roles in film and theatre, and his adult roles in film, television, and West End theatre.

Actor Fred Ward dies. He had the right stuff in movies from 'Tremors' to 'The Player'

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-e474d6b7-303f-4375-be54-b31713c31f2d-jpeg

Actor Fred Ward has died, according to his publicist, Ron Hofmann.

The star, who brought gentlemanly gruffness to films that included The Right Stuff, Henry and June and The Player died Sunday, May 8 at the age of 79. No cause of death was given.

Ward brought reservoirs of tenderness to his tough guy roles, and plenty of street credibility. A former boxer, lumberjack and short-order cook who served in the U.S. Air Force, Ward went to acting school and got his start when he moved to Rome as a young man and worked as a mime, then a voice-over actor. That led to a few appearances in TV productions by Italian neorealist pioneer Roberto Rossellini. Ward made his U.S. movie debut as a convict alongside Clint Eastwood in Escape from Alcatraz in 1979.

"The unique thing about Fred Ward is that you never knew where he was going to pop up, so unpredictable were his career choices," Hofmann wrote in an email. "He could play such diverse characters as Remo Williams, a cop trained by Chiun, Master of Sinanju (Joel Grey) to become an unstoppable assassin in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, or Earl Bass, who, alongside Kevin Bacon, battle giant, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh in 'cult' horror/comedy film, Tremors (1990), or a detective in the indie film Two Small Bodies (1993) directed by underground filmmaker Beth B., or a terrorist planning to blow up the Academy Awards in The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994), or the father of the lead character in Jennifer Lopez's revenge thriller Enough (2002)."

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-skynews-vangelis-vengelis_5776757-jpg

Vangelis, composer of the Chariots Of Fire music - one of film's most famous scores - has died aged 79.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis tweeted "Vangelis Papathanassiou is no longer among us".

Media in the country said he had died on Wednesday in a French hospital.

Born Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, he also composed the music for many other films and TV shows, including Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.

It was 1981's Oscar-winning best film, Chariots Of Fire, that gave him his breakthrough.

He won best original score for the iconic music
, which accompanies the famous slow-motion running sequences.

Its opening piano lines and use of the synthesizer are instantly recognisable to millions of movie fans.

Vangelis had no formal music training and after playing with rock bands in Greece, he left for Paris at 25 in the wake of a coup in his home country.

He developed a passion for electronic synthesizers - which were new at the time - and used them to fashion the melodic sounds that became his trademark.

Vangelis had success in the early 70s with a prog rock band called Aphrodite's Child, but grew disillusioned with the commercial pressures and retreated to a studio in London.

It was there the Chariots Of Fire music was created.

His Oscar for the hit film followed, as well as chart success; the score was partly a tribute to his father who had been a keen amateur runner.

However, he once referred to it in an interview as "only another piece of music" and it would overshadow his later work.

Among his other highlights was the score for dystopian sci-fi classic Blade Runner in 1982, and music for the Palme d'Or-winning Missing, by Greek director Costa-Gavras.

Vangelis also composed for advertising campaigns and formed a duo, called Jon and Vangelis, with Jon Anderson from prog rock group Yes.

Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, keyboardist and one of the founding members of iconic British electronic band Depeche Mode, has died. He was 60.

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-220526-andy-fletcher-depeche-mode-ew

The news was announced via Depeche Mode’s official Twitter account, which posted the news Thursday afternoon. “Fletch had a true heart of gold, and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh, or a cold pint,” the post reads. A cause of death was not confirmed.

Fletcher formed Depeche Mode in 1980 with Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Vince Clarke, who was initially seen as the auteur of the group before abruptly departing after their debut album and leaving Gore as the principal songwriter ever since.

“Fletch” was the least outwardly showy of the core trio, often wearing shades as he stood behind the keyboards while the more demonstrative Gahan and Gore roamed the stage, but still raising his arms to rouse the rabble.

Speaking of his role in the group, Fletcher said in an interview published in Electronic Beats that he was “the tall guy in the background, without whom this international corporation called Depeche Mode would never work. There is this big misunderstanding that in guitar bands real men are working real instruments — evening after evening — while in a synthesizer band like Depeche Mode nobody works, because it’s all machines."

"But that’s bull----. … Apart from the singer, the audience doesn’t really know which role which musician has within the group. But bands like Kraftwerk or Depeche Mode actually work as divisions of labor collectives. The contribution of each individual remains invisible. And because I don’t push myself to the fore, many mistake me for the fifth wheel."

Over the course of Fletcher’s tenure with the group, they sold over 100 million records worldwide and had 54 songs chart on the UK Singles Chart. As a member of Depeche Mode, Fletcher was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

Depeche Mode's Andy Fletcher has died at 60

Andy Fletcher, founding member and keyboardist for legendary English electronic/synth-pop group Depeche Mode, has died. He was 60.
AP reports that Fletcher died of natural causes at his home in England.
"We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy "Fletch" Fletcher," Depeche Mode said in a statement this morning.
"Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh, or a cold pint.
"Our hearts are with his family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy in this difficult time."
Fletcher formed the pioneering outfit in Basildon, England in 1980 with bandmates Vince Clarke and Martin Gore.
They released their debut album, Speak & Spell, the following year. It featured the massive hit 'Just Can't Get Enough', which was a top 5 hit in Australia.
Skip YouTube VideoFireFox NVDA users - To access the following content, press 'M' to enter the iFrame.

It was just one of dozens of hits the band have released in their time together, including 1989's 'Personal Jesus', 1997's 'Barrel Of A Gun', and 2005's 'Precious'.
Their influence extends so far beyond the charting singles though. Depeche Mode have released 14 studio albums, the most recent being 2017's Spirit, and their work maintained a standard
Singer Alison Moyet, who led the band Yazoo with fellow Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke, had known Fletcher for 50 years.
"I have just heard the news," she wrote on Twitter. "Since we were 10. Same estate. Class mates to label mates. He who kept faith with all the old gang and they with him. It doesn’t compute. Fletch. I have no words."
Fletcher's influence is clear through the countless musicians who have paid tribute to the keyboardist since news of his death broke just hours ago.
"Fletch was a warm, friendly and funny person who loved electronic music and could also give sensible advice about the music business," Pet Shop Boys said on Twitter.
"From the MOMENT Violator begins, you know you have been ushered into a New Landscape of Sound," wrote Vernon Reid of Living Colour. "Delightful. Familiar. Strange. Funky. Unknown. Every swell, Every attack is transportive. Every sound Just So. Andy Fletcher was a Mage, not a muggle."
"I knew Andy and considered him a friend," wrote Lol Tolhurst, founding member of The Cure. "We crossed many of the same pathways as younger men. My heart goes out to his family, bandmates, and DM fans. RIP Fletch."

Philip Baker Hall, Consummate Character Actor from ‘Boogie Nights’ to ‘Modern Family,’ Dies at 90

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-0_main-jpg

Philip Baker Hall, the prolific character actor known for his roles in films like “Boogie Nights” and “Magnolia” and shows such as “Seinfeld” and “Modern Family,” has died. He was 90.
Hall’s wife of nearly 40 years, Holly Wolfle Hall, confirmed the news to Associated Press, saying he died on Sunday in Glendale, Calif. surrounded by loved ones.
Hall had an impressive career of over six decades, holding roles in some of the most beloved movies and television of the modern era. His most memorable turns in film include the IRS Boss in “Say Anything,” Sydney in “Hard Eight,” Floyd Gondolli in “Boogie Nights,” Jimmy Gator in “Magnolia,” Jack Baylor in “Bruce Almighty,” Sherwood Morrill in “Zodiac” and a CIA director in “Argo.” When it came to TV, Hall gave over 200 guest performances, including as library cop Joe Bookman on “Seinfeld,” Sen. Matt Hunt on “The West Wing,” Dr. Morrison on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and Walt Kleezak on “Modern Family.”

Born in Toledo, Ohio on Sept. 10, 1931, Hall began his career as a United States Army translator in Germany and a high school teacher before pursuing acting as he entered his 40s. His film debut came in 1970 with “Cowards,” about the Vietnam War draft evasion, which screened at that year’s Cannes Film Festival. His first TV guest roles came in the ’70s from “Good Times” (1976), “M*A*S*H” (1977) and “Man From Atlantis” (1977). Film work picked up for Hall during the ’80s, when he starred as Richard Nixon in “Secret Honor” (1984) and held supporting roles in movies like Garry Marshall’s “Nothing in Common” (1986), “Midnight Run” (1988) starring Robert De Niro, John Hughes’ classic rom-com “Say Anything” (1989) and “Ghostbusters II” (1989), in which he played the police commissioner.
Hall kicked off the ’90s by appearing on “Seinfeld” as Joe Bookman, a detective searching for a library book that was long overdue, a role that became so iconic he would reprise it in the show’s series finale. Hall also began working with Paul Thomas Anderson during the decade, starring in his short film “Cigarettes & Coffee” in 1993, which then led to his directorial debut “Hard Eight” (1996) in which Hall stars alongside John C. Reilly. Hall later appeared in Anderson’s films “Boogie Nights” (1997) and “Magnolia” (1999), playing an adult theater magnate and a children’s game show host, respectively. Hall’s career in film continued to grow in the ’90s and 2000s with films such as “The Truman Show” (1998), “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999), “The Insider” (1999), “Dogville” (2003), “Bruce Almighty” (2003), “Zodiac” (2007) and “Argo” (2012).
More recently, Hall played Walt Kleezak, neighbor to the Dunphy family, in three episodes of “Modern Family” from 2011 to 2012. His last feature film was 2017’s “The Last Word,” starring Amanda Seyfried,” and his last television appearance was in the 2020 series “Messiah.”

Frank Williams, the man who played the vicar in Dad's Army, has passed away aged 90.

I had no idea he'd so buried himself in the role:

An Anglican from North London, Mr Williams would go on to serve three terms in the General Synod as a representative of the diocese of London.

Barger's death was announced in a post on his Facebook page which told viewers that 'if you are reading this message, you'll know that I'm gone'.

The biker, who lived in California, passed away at the age of 83 on Wednesday (29 June) while surrounded by his wife Zorana and other members of his family.

Joe Turkel, the Overlook Hotel's bartender in The Shining, dies at 94

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-image-jpg

Joe Turkel, a prolific character actor known for his turns in The Shining and Blade Runner, has died at 94, a representative confirmed to EW. Turkel died Monday at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif. with his sons Craig and Robert by his side.

Of his 100-plus film and TV credits, Turkel is perhaps best known for his role as Lloyd, the preternaturally calm, credit-extending bartender in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. When Jack Nicholson's unraveling hotel caretaker asks who's picking up his bar tab, Lloyd assures him, "It's not a matter that concerns you, Mr. Torrance — at least not at this point."

Two years later, in 1982, Ridley Scott cast Turkel in Blade Runner as Eldon Tyrell, who developed the replicants at the heart of the dystopian sci-fi classic and who dies brutally at the hands of one of his creations.

With his lean face and hollow cheeks, Turkel was a frequent presence on screens big and small beginning in 1949 with City Across the River, a crime noir about a Brooklyn street gang, until his final credited appearance in 1990's outer-space thriller The Dark Side of the Moon, which is set on a satellite maintenance ship in 2022.

In the decades in between, Turkel made appearances on shows including Miami Vice, The Andy Griffith Show, Fantasy Island, S.W.A.T., Bonanza, The Lone Ranger, and The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin.

Before casting him in The Shining, Kubrick worked with Turkel two other times, in 1956's The Killing and 1957's Paths of Glory. Turkel's turn as Lloyd in The Shining has been spoofed and homaged in TV and film over the years, including 2016's Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence sci-fi flick Passengers, which found Michael Sheen playing a similarly dressed, similarly unflappable bartender named Arthur.

The barman in 2010's PlayStation 3 game Heavy Rain also bears a strong resemblance to Turkel's character, and in 1994, The Simpson's annual Halloween outing, "Treehouse of Horror V," found Moe (voiced by Hank Azaria) standing in as the bartender encouraging Homer to kill his family, reasoning, "They'd be much happier as ghosts."

Before becoming a professional actor, Turkel joined the merchant Marines at 17 and enlisted in the United States Army during World War II, deploying to Europe. He was married to Anita J. Turkel, who preceded him in death.

Turkel completed his memoir, The Misery of Success, just before his death, and his family plans to publish it later this year.
