Paul Revere, Leader of the Raiders Rock Band, Dies at 76

Paul Revere, the organist and leader of the Raiders rock band, has died. He was 76. Roger Hart, manager for Paul Revere and the Raiders, said he died Saturday at his home in Garden Valley, Idaho, from cancer. "He'd been quiet about it for some time," Hart said. "Treated at the Mayo Clinic, Paul stayed on the road as long as he could, then retired recently back to Idaho, where he and his wife, Sydney, always kept a home."

Revere, born Paul Revere Dick, became known as "the madman of rock and roll" for his theatrical colonial wardrobe and infectious onstage persona with the band. "From Day 1, we've always been a party band that accidentally had some hit records and accidentally got on a hit television series," Revere told The Associated Press in a 2000 interview.

The group launched its career in 1963 with a popular rendition of Richard Berry's "Louie, Louie" before releasing its own hits, such as "Kicks," "Hungry" and "Good Thing." The band's biggest smash came in 1971 with "Indian Reservation."

Paul Revere and the Raiders served as the house band for the Dick Clark TV show "Where the Action Is" and made an appearance as themselves in the "Batman" TV series starring Adam West. While the band's line-up changed over the past 50 years, Revere remained a constant presence with the group and he continued touring until earlier this year.

The former Formula One driver Andrea de Cesaris has died in a motorcycle accident in Rome. He was 55.

With the French driver Jules Bianchi fighting for his life after crashing at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, motor racing was dealt another blow when the official F1 website confirmed De Cesaris had died as a result of the accident in his home city.

He drove for the British-based team McLaren for one season in 1981 and the team tweeted: “All at McLaren send condolences to ex-McLaren F1 driver Andrea De Cesaris, who sadly passed away today.”

De Cesaris, who raced for nine other teams, started 208 Grands Prix in a career which ran from 1980 to 1994. However, he did not win any of them – a record for the most races without a success.

His most successful results were second-placed finishes at races in Germany and South Africa in 1983, while representing Alfa Romeo.

The previous year in the United States – and with the same team _ De Cesaris became the youngest driver to start a Grand Prix from the front of the grid, aged 22.

After leaving Formula One, he raced in the Grand Prix Masters series for retired F1 drivers, before becoming a currency trader and windsurfing enthusiast.

King Turtle Stew? Not very PC these days...

Geoffrey Holder, Dancer, Choreographer, Actor, Artist, Has Died
BY STEPHEN M. SILVERMAN @stephenmsilverm 10/06/2014 AT 10:35 AM EDT

Geoffrey Holder, a larger-than-life presence in the world of movies, stage, TV, art, publishing music, dance – even advertising – died of pneumonia Sunday, The New York Times reports. He was 84 and a resident at the Lillian Booth Actors Home of The Actors Fund in Englewood, New Jersey.

Holder's imposing 6'6" frame could barely contain his many talents, and a 1975 PEOPLE profile that ran at the time he won two Tonys for his directing and costuming Broadway's groundbreaking The Wiz described him as having "a voice as deep as Othello and as smooth as Caribbean rum."

TV watchers will remember him as the pitchman for the soft drink 7-Up, which he called "the un-cola," while movie buffs will remember him as tribal chief Willie Shakespeare in the original Doctor Dolittle, the ominous Baron Samedi in the 007 caper Live and Let Die and the mystical Punjab in the 1982 musical Annie.

Holder got his first whiff of creativity while growing up the son of a salesman "with brains" in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Holder's parents encouraged him and his older equally multifaceted brother Boscoe (who became a London-based artist) to develop all their talents – as painters, singers, musicians.

Holder first came to New York in 1953 with his own folk dance company and the following year danced on Broadway in the Harold Arlen-Truman Capote musical House of Flowers. There he met dancer Carmen de Lavallade and proposed four days later – though she did not accept until she visited his apartment and, as Holder told PEOPLE with his hearty laugh, "discovered that all the paintings on the walls looked like her."

Their son Léo was born in 1957.

As PEOPLE also reported, Holder's lush impressionist paintings hung in the Barbados Museum and Washington's Corcoran Gallery, as well as in the homes of such luminaries as showbiz legend Lena Horne and conservative political pundit William F. Buckley.

For two years Holder was a principal dancer of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and he remained active in the world of dance, choreographing works for the Dance Theater of Harlem and Alvin Ailey.

On the subject of his TV commercials, Holder remained firm, even philosophical: "I'm no snob. The commercial is an art form unto itself. After all, you are seducing people."

Friends adored him not only for his generous spirit but for his cooking. He even wrote a book on the subject, Geoffrey Holder's Caribbean Cookbook, which included tantalizing recipes for orange rice, king turtle stew, coconut chicken sigurd and salt-fish pie.

Like the man himself, totally distinctive.

Aberdeen quizmaster famed for rude Countdown out-take dies

    BY ANDY MCLAREN, 13 OCT 2014 1.51PM

TRIBUTES were today paid to a popular Aberdeen quizmaster who appeared in one of TV show’s most well-known out-takes.

Gino Corr, of Dyce, who was one of the first people to set up quiz nights in pubs across the city, has died aged 70.

Mr Corr, who had worked as a rigger, university tutor and accountant, became one of the first people to start quiz nights in pubs across the city including the Spider’s Web, the Tilted Wig and Kittybrewster Bar.

David Greenglass, spy who testified against Rosenbergs, dies at 92
    By ELAINE WOO

David Greenglass, the Army machinist-turned-Soviet-spy who was vilified for betraying his country and his sister, Ethel Rosenberg, in the Cold War-era atomic espionage case that ended with the electrocutions of Rosenberg and her husband, Julius, has died. He was 92.

His attorney, Daniel Arshack, confirmed Tuesday that Greenglass died on July 1 “somewhere in New York state,” but declined to give other details.

Greenglass, who spent 10 years in the federal penitentiary at Lewisburg, Pa., as a co-conspirator in the case, knew that history would remember him as the “spy that turned his family in.” He provided the most incriminating testimony in an otherwise weak government case against his sister -- information that, he admitted decades later, had been a lie.

Since his release from prison in 1960, he lived under an assumed name in the New York City area. He avoided the spotlight until 2001, when he admitted in the book “The Brother” by Sam Roberts that he had lied about Esther Rosenberg's involvement in her husband's spying in order to save his own wife.

The Rosenbergs' convictions in 1951 bolstered Sen. Joseph McCarthy's campaign to expose Communists in government and other fields. They were the only people executed in the United States for Cold War espionage and went to their deaths as martyrs, and their innocence became a tenet of American radicalism over the ensuing decades.

Alain Siritzy, the brains behind the popular Emmanuelle erotic films, has died, aged 72.
The producer passed away in Paris, France on Saturday.
He acquired the film rights to Emmanuelle Arsan's steamy 1959 novel in the early 1970s and helped create Emmanuelle in 1974.
The film, featuring late Dutch actress and model Sylvia Kristel, was an overnight sensation in France and quickly became an international hit, prompting Siritzy to make a sequel a year later.
He went on to produce over 80 Emmanuelle titles for film, television and video.

I remember her most from her role as Tim Robbins' girlfriend in the horror film "Jacob's Ladder" from 1990.

Singer Tim Hauser, founder of Grammy-winning vocal group The Manhattan Transfer, has died. He was 72.

Hauser died on Thursday from cardiac arrest in Pennsylvania, his publicist JoAnn Geffen announced, said The Hollywood reporter. He is survived by his wife Barb and children Basie and Lily.

The first manifestation of the group was established in 1969 in New York City by Hauser, Erin Dickins, Marty Nelson, and Pat Rosalia. Gene Pistilli, a good friend, soon became an integral component. This team lasted until 1973.

The next line-up of the group was formed in 1973 again by Hauser along with singers Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, and Laurel Masse. After performances at Max's Kansas City, the group developed a cult fan base.

The music group covered a vast array of musical styles and has collected multiple pop and jazz Grammy Awards.

'Vocalese', their critically acclaimed 1985 album, earned 12 Grammy nominations, second only to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' as the most nominated album in history.

The group was expected to continue touring, with their next show scheduled for October 23.

The Manhattan Transfer hosted their own comedy-variety series for four weeks in summer 1975.

Their studio album, 'Brasil' (1987) won the Grammy for best pop performance by a duo or group with vocal.

Through the years, The Manhattan Transfer recorded with the likes of Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson, Laura Nyro, Phil Collins, BB King, Chaka Khan, James Taylor and Frankie Valli.

"Tim was the visionary behind The Manhattan Transfer. We spent more than 40 years together singing and making music, travelling the world and sharing so many special moments throughout our lives. It's incomprehensible to think of this world without him," the other members of the band said in a statement.

Hauser produced the soundtrack to the 1991 film 'The Marrying Man', which starred Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, and appeared as Woody, the bandleader in the movie.

I just find it really curious how they all seem to be dropping like flies lately in such high numbers. There seems to be a huge gap between the younger and the older in terms of these high quality entertainers dropping off recently, I guess it's that baby boomer effect.

I remember once he was speaking to someone in Greek, and a bystander asked another Greek person what Gough was saying. He replied that he could not understand because Gough was speaking classical Greek.

He had a far longer and richer old age than his old nemesis John Kerr, according to historian Phillip Knightley : "The remaining years of Sir John Kerr's life were miserable ones. He was subject to relentless harassment whenever he appeared in public. He therefore moved to London, where he could be seen most days, usually the worse for wear, at one or another gentleman's club."

Fashion designer Oscar de la Renta dies at 82

NEW YORK (AP) — Oscar de la Renta, the worldly gentleman designer who shaped the wardrobe of socialites and Hollywood stars for more than four decades, has died. He was 82.

De la Renta died at home Monday evening in Connecticut surrounded by family and friends and "more than a few dogs," according to a handwritten statement signed by his stepdaughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband, Alex Bolen.

"While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us. Oscar's hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company," the statement said. "All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar's example we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much."

The late '60s and early '70s were a defining moment in U.S. fashion as New York-based designers finally carved a look of their own that was finally taken seriously by Europeans. De la Renta and his peers, including the late Bill Blass, Roy Halston and Geoffrey Beene, defined American style — and their influence is still spotted today.

De la Renta's specialty was eveningwear, though he also was known for chic daytime suits favored by the women who would gather at the Four Seasons or Le Cirque at lunchtime. His signature looks were voluminous skirts, exquisite embroideries and rich colors.

Most recently, Amal Alamuddin wore a de la Renta-designed wedding dress when she married George Clooney. First ladies Laura Bush wore an icy blue gown by de la Renta to the 2005 inaugural ball and Hillary Rodham Clinton wore a gold de la Renta in 1997. On the red carpet at the Academy Awards, Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock were among the celebrities to don his feminine and opulent gowns. His clothes even were woven into episodes of "Sex and the City" with style icon character Carrie Bradshaw dropping his name — and comparing his designs to poetry.

Musician behind Gerry Rafferty hit Baker Street dies, aged 60

First published 18:38 Tuesday 21 October 2014 in News
Stroud News and Journal: Photograph of the Author © by Press Association

The musician behind one of the most recognisable saxophone solos - on Gerry Rafferty's hit Baker Street - who was from Exeter, has died.

Raphael Ravenscroft, 60, who found fame almost overnight following the release of the 1978 track, went on to work with music icons such as Pink Floyd, Abba and Marvin Gaye, and more recently he worked as a session musician for pop artists Daft Punk and Duffy.

He died following a suspected heart attack early on Sunday.

Rafferty died at his daughter's home near Stroud in January 2011 and at his funeral, a recording by Ravenscroft called Forgiveness was played.

Ravenscroft is reported to have been paid £27 for the session with a cheque that bounced, while the hit reached number three in the UK charts and number two in the US and Rafferty was said to have earned £80,000 a year from the royalties on the song alone.

In a radio interview in 2011, Ravenscroft said hearing the song annoyed him.

He said: "I'm irritated because it's out of tune. Yeah, it's flat. By enough of a degree that it irritates me at best."

He had already appeared on one disco album by Maxine Nightingale, Right Back Where We Started From, in 1976, as an arranger but emerged as one of pop-rock's most prominent sax men.

In 1990 Ravenscroft, also a former tutor of music at York College, published a successful instruction book, The Complete Saxophone Player.

This summer Ravenscroft, of Exeter, Devon, organised a charity gala concert in memory of a local schoolgirl who died after falling from a wall in May this year.
