Riz Ortolani, an Italian composer of dozens of film scores, whose Grammy-winning instrumental melody featured in the 1962 film “Mondo Cane” evolved into “More,” the celebrated anthem of love covered by sensuous crooners around the globe, died on Jan. 23 at his villa outside Rome. He was 87.

The cause was complications after surgery, his son, Enrico, said.

At home in a variety of musical styles and moods — jaunty humor, buzzing suspense, lush romanticism — Mr. Ortolani was among Italy’s busiest film composers for almost half a century, working in a wide range of genre movies, including spaghetti westerns, thrillers and erotica.

Though not widely known in the United States — unlike his countryman the composer Ennio Morricone, he was not generally associated with popular American films — Mr. Ortolani wrote the scores for a number of English-language films. Among them were “The Yellow Rolls-Royce” (1964), a triptych about three different owners of the same car, with an original screenplay by the playwright Terence Rattigan; “Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell” (1968), a comedy with Gina Lollobrigida, Phil Silvers, Telly Savalas and Peter Lawford about an Italian woman with a daughter who has been getting child support from three former American soldiers who return to Italy for a reunion; and “The Hunting Party” (1971), the western drama with Candice Bergen and Gene Hackman.

More recently, the director Quentin Tarantino, a fan, used Mr. Ortolani’s music in his movies “Inglourious Basterds” and “Django Unchained.”

But Mr. Ortolani is probably best known, at least in this country, for two films. The first was “Mondo Cane” (“A Dog’s World”), a documentary of sorts presenting a kaleidoscope of cultural oddities and human behavior, from peculiar to perverse, that the filmmakers, Paolo Cavara, Franco Prosperi and Gualtiero Jacopetti, found in far-flung corners of the world. The score, consisting of several distinct musical themes repeated in varying arrangements, is credited to Mr. Ortolani and Nino Oliviero, though Mr. Ortolani’s family said Mr. Ortolani had been responsible for all the themes.

“Ti Guarderò Nel Cuore,” or “More,” as the song came to be known — the lyrics, beginning “More than the greatest love the world has known,” were subsequently written by Norman Newell — accompanied scenes depicting a parade of female lifeguards in Australia, drunken beer drinkers in Germany and a French artist using naked women smeared with blue paint as brushes.

It won a 1963 Grammy Award for best instrumental theme and was nominated for an Oscar for best song. (The winner was “Call Me Irresponsible,” by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, from the film “Papa’s Delicate Condition.”) Since then “More” has been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Sergio Franchi, Doris Day, Andy Williams, the Supremes, Bobby Darin and Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass, among many others.

The second film for which Mr. Ortolani was well known in the United States was “Cannibal Holocaust” (1980), directed by Ruggero Deodato, which prefigured “The Blair Witch Project” in its use of what it presented as found footage taken by a team of documentary filmmakers who had vanished in the Amazon jungle. Ostensibly an examination of what it means to be civilized, it became a notorious cult film and was especially controversial for its scenes of bloody violence, animal slaughter and gang rape — a context that makes Mr. Ortolani’s often serene score strikingly, even appallingly, ironic.

Riziero Ortolani was born in Pesaro, on Italy’s Adriatic coast, on March 25, 1926, the last of six children. His father, Domenico, a postal employee, was a music lover who taught himself to play the double bass and presented his youngest child with a violin when he was 4.

Young Riziero studied at the Rossini Conservatory of Music in Pesaro and then moved to Rome, where he worked for RAI, Italy’s national broadcasting company, directing its jazz orchestra. Before beginning his movie career in the 1950s, he served in the Italian Air Force and played in its orchestra.

In addition to his son, Mr. Ortolani is survived by his wife, Katyna Ranieri; a daughter, Rizia; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Ortolani received a second Oscar nomination in 1970 for the song “Till Love Touches Your Life,” from the film “Madron.” He won a Golden Globe in 1966 for the song “Forget Domani,” from “The Yellow Rolls-Royce,” and received many awards and nominations in Europe, including a lifetime achievement award from the World Soundtrack Association in Ghent, Belgium, in 2013.

Physicist who helped build the world’s first atom bomb dies at 92

John R. Huizenga, a physicist who helped build the world’s first atom bomb, solve dozens of atomic riddles and debunk claims that scientists in Utah had achieved nuclear fusion in a jar of water, died Saturday in San Diego. He was 92.

The cause was heart failure, his family said.

Huizenga (pronounced HIGHS-ing-a) was present at the main junctures of the early nuclear era and helped push back many frontiers of nuclear physics. He also took on diplomatic missions and prominent roles in settling scientific disputes.

Early on, Huizenga was part of the scientific team that discovered Elements 99 and 100 in the periodic table - known, respectively, as einsteinium, after Albert Einstein, and fermium, after Enrico Fermi, the Italian Nobel laureate who helped lead the atom bomb project at the University of Chicago.

After World War II, Huizenga attended famous lectures given in Chicago by Fermi and soon began a half-century of atomic sleuthing.

“John Huizenga conducted research at the forefront of nuclear physics and contributed a host of exceptional insights,” said Wolf-Udo Schröder, a professor of chemistry and physics at the University of Rochester and a protégé of Huizenga’s. The discoveries stimulated “vigorous research,” he added, and remain central to the field.

John Robert Huizenga was born in Fulton, Ill., on the Mississippi River, on April 21, 1921. His father was a farmer, and until high school John learned his lessons in a one-room schoolhouse.

He graduated in early 1944 from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., where a teacher got him hooked on chemistry. He entered graduate school in physical chemistry at the University of Illinois and was soon drafted into the Manhattan Project to build the atom bomb.

The recruiters, he recalled in a memoir for the American Institute of Physics, a federation of physical science societies, “convinced me of the importance” of using his scientific training “in an exciting and militarily important secret project.”

In Oak Ridge, Tenn., he supervised teams analyzing the purity of enriched uranium coming out of sprawling production lines. Robert S. Norris, a nuclear historian, said the purified uranium fueled the weapon that leveled Hiroshima in August 1945.

After the war, Huizenga received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and took a job in nuclear chemistry at the Argonne National Laboratory, which was then on the University of Chicago campus. It was there that he met Fermi. His research focused on uncovering the secrets of atomic interactions, especially with the subatomic particles known as neutrons.

His first big moment came soon after the government detonated the world’s first hydrogen bomb in the Pacific in 1952. The bomb vaporized an atoll. In sifting through the radioactive debris, Huizenga and his Argonne peers, as well as teams in Berkeley, Calif., and Los Alamos, N.M., found that two new elements - highly radioactive and unknown in nature - had formed when uranium atoms in the nuclear blast captured speeding neutrons.

The discoveries, of einsteinium and fermium, were initially kept secret for security reasons, then unveiled in 1955, not long after the scientists they had been named after had died.

In 1966, Huizenga received the government’s Lawrence Award for outstanding accomplishments in illuminating the intricacies of nuclear fission, the fracturing of atoms into pieces. That same year, he accompanied the first American scientific delegation to be sent to the Soviet Union.

He accepted a professorship at the University of Rochester in 1967 and stayed there for the rest of his career. His 1973 textbook, “Nuclear Fission,” written with Robert Vandenbosch, remains a standard in the field. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976.

Huizenga lectured in China after its opening to the West. After one visit, in 1979, the nation’s leader, Deng Xiaoping, sent his youngest son, Deng Zhifang, to study in Huizenga’s department at the University of Rochester.

In 1989, Huizenga was appointed co-chairman of a Department of Energy panel that investigated and debunked the highly publicized “cold fusion” claims of two University of Utah chemists, who said they had achieved nuclear fusion at room temperature in a jar of water. If their claims had been true, the discovery would have flooded the world with energy cheap enough to supplant all rivals.

Huizenga lectured widely on the topic and in 1992 published “Cold Fusion: The Scientific Fiasco of the Century.” On the claim’s 10th anniversary, in 1999, as true believers around the globe kept looking for glimmers of hope that cold fusion could be realized, he accused them of chasing a ghost.

“It’s as dead as ever,” Huizenga told The New York Times in an interview. “It’s quite unbelievable that the thing has gone on for 10 years.”

Huizenga’s wife of 54 years, Dolly, died in 1999. He is survived by four children, Linda, Jann, Robert and Joel; two sisters, Gertrude Drew and Kathryn Disselkoen; and three grandchildren.

Huizenga summarized his career in a memoir, “Five Decades of Research in Nuclear Science” (2009). The book provided much detail on the half-lives of radioactive elements, but it also provided evidence, he wrote in its concluding pages, of “a life well lived.”

'Ryan's Daughter' Star Christopher Jones Dies at 72
9:47 PM PST 1/31/2014 by Mike Barnes

Christopher Jones, an heir apparent to James Dean who starred in such films as The Looking Glass War and Ryan’s Daughter before quitting show business at the height of his brief but dazzling career, has died. He was 72.

Jones, who also toplined the Samuel Z. Arkoff cult classic Wild in the Streets (1968) and played the title character in the ABC series The Legend of Jesse James, died Friday at Los Alamitos (Calif.) Medical Center of complications from cancer, Paule McKenna told The Hollywood Reporter. McKenna had four children with Jones.

In Ryan’s Daughter (1970), directed by famed British helmer David Lean, Jones played Randolph Doryan, a dashing but shell-shocked British officer who has an affair with a married Irish woman (Sarah Miles) during World War I. He and Miles have a memorable lovemaking scene in the woods.

In 2007, Jones told a British newspaper that he was having a real-life affair during the filming of the movie with Sharon Tate, the actress and wife of director Roman Polanski. When she was brutally murdered by members of Charles Manson’s gang in Los Angeles in August 1969, Jones was devastated and gave up acting, McKenna said.

Quentin Tarantino offered Jones the part of Zed in Pulp Fiction (1994) but he refused, and Peter Greene got the job. Jones’ next and final screen appearance would come in the comedic crime movie Mad Dog Time (1996), directed by Larry Bishop, son of comic actor Joey Bishop.

“He had excitement. He was a movie star,” Tarantino said in a 1999 episode of E! True Hollywood Story. “He looked like James Dean, but Chris Jones didn’t take himself seriously like James Dean. He was a big comer -- and with the right person handling and directing, he could still be as big as anybody.”

Jones grew up an orphan in Jackson, Tenn. He tried out for the Actors Studio in New York and appeared on Broadway in The Night of the Iguana in 1961. Later, he married Susan Strasberg, the daughter of Actors Studio founder Lee Strasberg.
Jones came to Hollywood and landed a gig as the notorious outlaw in The Legend of Jesse James, but the Western, facing steep competition on Monday nights from The Lucy Show on CBS and Dr. Kildaire on NBC, lasted just one season, airing from September 1965 to May 1966.

After he and Susan Strasberg appeared in Chubasco (1967), Jones played Max Frost, the malevolent rock star who becomes president, in American International Pictures’ Wild in the Streets. The satire also starred Shelley Winters and, in one of his first film, Richard Pryor.

In Frank Pierson’s The Looking Glass War (1969), adapted from the spy novel by John le Carre, Jones portrays a civilian who is recruited by British intelligence to go behind the Iron Curtain on a mission.

Jones also starred in Three in the Attic (1968) as a man who gets his comeuppance from three girls who discover he’s been three-timing them.

He most recently had a career as an artist and sculptor; his oil painting of legendary actor Rudolph Valentino was displayed at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

In addition to McKenna, survivors include his children Seagen, Calin, Tauer, Delon, Jeremy, Christopher and Jennifer.

Luis Aragones: Former Spain manager dies aged 75

Former Spain national team manager Luis Aragones has died, aged 75.

Aragones led Spain to their first major trophy at an international tournament with victory in the 2008 European Championship.

He also managed several of Spain's top clubs, including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid where he won the La Liga title in 1977.

As a player, he scored 172 goals in 372 games when at Atletico and represented his country on 13 occasions.

The Spanish Football Federation issued a statement that "expressed its grief and shock at the death of Luis Aragones".

The statement added: "[He was a] former player and coach of several Spanish and global clubs and the Spain national team at the beginning of their glorious success on the worldwide stage."

Atletico said in a statement: "One of the greatest Rojiblancas legends has left us."

The club's president Enrique Cerezo added: "Luis Aragones was a great player and coach, but above all a great person and a friend.

"On behalf of the whole club, I want to express our condolences to his family."

Aragones took over as manager of the national team in 2004 and went about making wholesale changes.

    Aragones honours

    • Player: La Liga (1966, 1970, 1973) and Copa del Generalisimo (1965 & 1972)with Atletico Madrid
    • Club manager: La Liga (1977), Copa del Rey (1976, 1985, 1992), Intercontinental Cup (1974) with Atletico Madrid and Copa del Rey (1988) with Barcelona
    • National manager: European Championship (2008) with Spain

He dropped players such as Raul and Michel Salgado and then introduced a new playing style of short-passing football which was bringing success to Barcelona.

Four years later, the team claimed European success, beating Germany 1-0 in the final.

He left the post soon after, but the foundations were there for Spain to go on and win the 2010 World Cup and defend their European title in 2012.

At the time of Spain's success in 2008, midfielder Xabi Alonso said: "He is one of the main reasons we won the title. We have been through tough moments during these two years, but he stuck with the same team, having confidence in the players. Those decisions were the right ones."

Aragones went on to coach Turkish side Fenerbahce, but was unsuccessful and left after just one season.

At club level, he also won three Copa del Rey trophies with Atletico Madrid to add to the league title.

Actor Maximilian Schell dead at 83

    Published: 1 Feb 2014 at 22.23
    Online news:

VIENNA - Austrian actor Maximilian Schell, who won an Oscar for best actor in 1961 for ''Judgment at Nuremberg,'' has died at the age of 83, his agent announced Saturday.

A picture taken on Jan 30, 2007 shows Austrian-born Swiss actor Maximilian Schell posing in front of a portrait of his sister actress Maria Schell at the film museum in Frankfurt. (AFP photo)

Schell died following ''a sudden and serious illness,'' agent Patricia Baumbauer said.

The actor took ill on Jan 18 in Kitzbuhel, western Austria, where he was filming for German channel ZDF, the Austrian news agency APA reported.

He died after leaving the hospital on Tuesday, APA reported after having initially said he died overnight in a clinic in the western Austrian city of Innsbruck.

Born in Vienna, before fleeing with his parents into exile in Switzerland following Austria's annexation by the Nazis in 1938, he returned to Austria after the war and later became a successful Hollywood actor.

In 1961, he won an Oscar for best actor for his role as a lawyer for a Nazi war criminal in Stanley Kramer's ''Judgment at Nuremberg.'' He starred with Marlene Dietrich, Burt Lancaster, Spencer Tracy and Richard Widmark.

Spending a long time in the shadow of his older sister Maria Schell, who had also broken into Hollywood, Maximilian Schell started at the age of 23 as a stage actor in the Swiss town of Basel.

He remained faithful to the theatre until his later years, acting in 2000 in a stage version of ''Judgment at Nuremberg,'' and in London in 2006 he acted in a Robert Altman production of an Arthur Miller play, ''Resurrection Blues''.

In cinema, he made his Hollywood debut in 1958 at 28 years old, acting beside Marlon Brando in ''The Young Lions,'' a film by Edward Dmytryk.

Former Chelsea and Liverpool striker Tony Hateley dies

Former Chelsea, Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Tony Hateley has died at the age of 72.

Hateley scored 211 league goals during his career and was a club-record signing for both Chelsea and Liverpool, costing the Blues £100,000 in 1966.

His son Mark was also a striker, playing 32 times for England.

A Liverpool statement said: "The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club go out to his family and friends at this sad time."

Hateley started his career with Notts County before moving to Villa Park in 1963, scoring 68 times in 127 league appearances.

After his big-money move to Chelsea, Liverpool paid £96,000 to take him to Anfield and at the time of his retirement in 1974 his combined transfer fees were a record in English football.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker tweeted: "Sorry to hear of the death of Tony Hateley.

"I played with his son, Mark for England, and met Tony. A wonderful football family. #RIP."

Son Mark was prolific at Portsmouth, AC Milan, Monaco and Rangers during the 1980s and 1990s and grandson Tom Hateley is also a professional footballer, currently playing in Poland after spells at Motherwell and Tranmere

Former Wales rugby international Keith Bradshaw dies, aged 74

Former Wales international rugby player Keith Bradshaw has died at the age of 74 after a long illness.
A place-kicking centre, Bradshaw won nine caps and scored 36 points in his international career.
He was a key member of the team that won the Five Nations Championship in 1966, kicking two penalties as Wales beat France 9-8 in the final game.
Bradshaw, from Cefn Cribwr, was captain of Bridgend RFC in the 1965-1966 season.
He made his debut in the 6-6 draw with England at Twickenham in January 1966 and in his second Test against Scotland scored a try, conversion and penalty as Wales won 11-3 in Cardiff.
Bradshaw toured South Africa with Wales the same year, but missed out on selection for the 1965 Five Nations before returning to the team in 1966.
He is best remembered for converting Stuart Watkins' try to clinch an 11-11 draw with France in 1966.
The ball fell over during his run-up, but Bradshaw still successfully kicked the goal to earn a draw.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Photo - NYC 03/14/09 EXCLUSIVE: Philip Seymour Hoffman girlfriend Mimi O'Donnell with their 3 kids,

    Strange and sad indeed
It seems he was normal and had a girlfriend and children but played several gay roles.

Hoffman was one of the most versatile and in-demand actors of his generation. He first came to the attention of many moviegoers as Scotty, the gay member of a porn crew who is smitten with Mark Wahlberg’s Dirk Diggler, in 1997′s Boogie Nights. In the 1999 comedy Flawless, Hoffman vividly portrayed a drag queen who helped rehabilitate Robert DeNiro’s cop character after he suffered a stroke.
Hoffman won numerous awards for his unforgettable performance as gay writer Truman Capote, despite there being no physical resemblance between the two men, in the 2005 film, beating Heath Ledger’s searing turn as the closeted cowboy in Brokeback Mountain for many honors.
Heath ledger was also normal but killed himself after playing a homo.
Maybe acting gay , makes you a target for gay demons or just plain mental illness?
and causes deep self loathing or something that only drugs can mask ?

Whatever it is, it seems best to avoid acting gay if you want a long happy life .
Anyway RIP and i hope other young actors take note and avoid these sick roles .

That's a real loss and I'm sad to hear it.
The film world is less rich.
(And here's one who is actually famous)

    That is some sad news.

My favorite Phillip Seymour Hoffman role was Truman Capote.

Indeed, he'll be sorely missed.. too many shit actors out there nowadays don't compare to him. Hoffman is a versatile actor and never played a repeat role.

Vulgar scene in Punch Drunk Love with Adam Sandler.
