[quote] Legendary Bassist Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn Passes Away At Age 70

Donald “Duck” Dunn, who played on hundreds of rock and soul classics as the bassist for Booker T. and the MGs, and later as a session player, passed away Sunday morning at the age of 70. Steve Cropper, the MGs guitarist, broke the news on his Facebook page at approximately 12:30AM Eastern time.
“Today I lost my best friend, the World has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live,” Cropper, his lifelong friend, wrote. “Duck Dunn died in his sleep Sunday morning May 13 in Tokyo Japan after finishing 2 shows at the Blue Note Night Club.”
Born in Memphis in November 24, 1941, Dunn started playing bass at the age of 16. “I tried the guitar but it had two strings too many,” he wrote on his website. “It was just too complicated, man! Plus, I grew up with Steve Cropper. There were so many good guitar players another one wasn’t needed. What was needed was a bass.”
Cropper and Dunn soon formed a band, The Royal Spades, which grew into the Mar-Keys. The mother of the band’s saxophone player, Charles “Packy” Axton, was Estelle Axton, who owned the fledgling Satellite Record label. Shortly after their song ‘Last Night’ became a national hit, the label changed its name to Stax.
In 1964, Cropper convinced Dunn to join Booker T. and the MGs after original bassist Lewie Steinberg departed. As the house band for Stax, they provided the music for some of the greatest southern soul music ever recorded. Virtually every song recorded by Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Albert King, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Rufus Thomas and many others for Stax bears their distinct groove, with Dunn holding down the low end.
After Booker T. and the MGs disbanded in 1971, Dunn became a highly sought-after session bassist for those looking for a bit of that Memphis magic. He appeared on records by Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bill Withers, Muddy Waters, Neil Young and many others. A discography, which probably isn’t complete, is on his website. Movie lovers were able to put the face to the sound when he appeared as himself in the 1980 movie ‘The Blues Brothers.’
As a member of Booker T. and the MGs, Dunn was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy award in 2007.
Dunn is the second Memphis soul great to pass away in Andrew Love, who played tenor saxophone with Dunn on those Stax classics, died on April 12. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and the countless musicians who knew and worked with him over the years.

US singer Donna Summer, famous for disco hits including I Feel Love, Love To Love You Baby and Love's Unkind, has died at the age of 63.
Summer was one of the most popular artists of the disco movement and won five Grammy Awards between 1978 and 97.
Her collaborations with producer Giorgio Moroder helped define the genre, as well as having a huge influence on the synth pop sound.
She had 29 UK top 40 singles during her career.
Born LaDonna Andre Gaines, she grew up in Boston and started singing in her church's gospel choir.
She began her professional career on the stage and joined the cast of a German production of the musical Hair in the late 1960s, leading her to move to the country.
Her first solo record came out in 1971 but it was her work with the Italian synthesiser pioneer Moroder that led to her breakthrough with Love to Love You Baby in 1975.
'Go-go' musician Chuck Brown dies

Guitarist and singer Chuck Brown, who mixed funk, soul and Latin styles to help create the upbeat "go-go" scene in Washington DC in the 1970s, has died.
Known as the "godfather of go-go", Brown's biggest hit was Bustin' Loose, which spent a month at the top of the US R&B chart at the end of the 1970s.
Brown, 75, was known for performances that did not stop between songs and could go on for several hours.
He said the style was named go-go because "the music just goes and goes".
Washington DC Mayor Vincent Gray was among those paying tribute.
"Go-go is DC's very own unique contribution to the world of pop music," he told the Associated Press news agency. "Today is a very sad day for music lovers the world over."

Ceefax founding editor Colin McIntyre dies at 85
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/1842.jpg
The founding editor of the BBC's Ceefax service - the world's first teletext service - has died at the age of 85
Colin McIntyre, who worked for the BBC for 30 years, died in hospital on Thursday after a short illness.
When Ceefax was launched in 1974, he updated all 24 news pages on his own, feeding punch tape into machines.
When he retired in 1982, Ceefax had a 20-strong team. It went on to attract 22 million viewers a week and inspired teletext services around Europe.
Ceefax will end its transmissions in October when the digital switchover is completed. McIntyre's death comes just four weeks after the service was switched off in London.
What a strange individual, why would one bang one out over a song?
Dirty basto...Now I have this image in my head of a grey haired wrinkly ass old fucker rolling around on his living room floor wearing a set of shit stained speedos (on his head) furiously beating his turgid tool in rhythm to a fucking disco song.
The curtains are partly drawn and condensation is streaming down the inside of the glass to form pools on the rotten sill. Outside the English sky is grey, a weak sun peers out from behind drizzle laden clouds.
The early morning sounds of bin collectors and clink of milk bottles disturbs his concentration, he looses some phat as the needle scratches out the end of the 12 inch single he furtively collected from HMV not two days earlier. Our Hero rises from his prone position on the threadbare carpet, some remnants of last nights snacks of cheese and onion crisps stick to his greasy back.
He replaces the needle and frowns as he examines his member, hand grips like those on the handle bars of a child's bicycle have appeared since he bought this recording of a lusty Kneegrow woman pretending to orgasm set to a disco beat.
Aunty lies down and settles in his damp patch on the carpet, the beat from the tinny speakers and the groans of the black slut cause his member to rise again (for about the 20th time in two days) near the middle of the track and he's banging one out like a storm trooper, oooooooh love to love you aunty, errrrr oohhhhh love to love you aunty, the familiar rising of sperm from his wrinkled sack gives speed to his knuckle shuffle. He rises to a kneeling position, this time he's gonna let fly over the cover photo, give the black jezebel Kunt a proper facial. Bang, bang, bang goes auntie, hammering away like a fucking crazy fucker oooohhhh eeerrr love to lo...he lets it fly aaarrrrrggggg fucking lovely. A tiny bead of green speckled spermatozoa appears at his japs eye. He collapses in a disheveled heap back to his damp patch and falls into a deep greasy slumber.
See what you done you Kunt auntie? If i can't get this image outa my head there's gonna be trouble...dirty basatdo........:ourrules:
errm, I said "I used to", which referred to my teenage years when the song was rampant, being banned by the BBC etc
it is a very sexy song, if you have ever heard it
so using it as a sex stimulant was equivalent to looking at porn
the rest of your fantasies are all in your dirty little mind!
and don't call me Aunty, that is Ant's nik from Terry, you will mix him up
Sorry, can we just use the same nik with Terry's permission of course, I'll PM to ask him if that's ok.
I have heard that song and it sounds like a fucking smelly nignog wench with flies buzzing around her cheese smattered labia getting off on god knows what.
Not surprising the BBC banned the Kunt.
Actually I might watch it again on you tube see if it gives me a rise. Thanks.

Raleigh Chopper designer Alan Oakley dies from cancer
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/2105.jpg
The man who designed Raleigh's iconic Chopper bicycle has died after a battle with cancer.
Alan Oakley, 85 and from Nottingham, home of the bike manufacturer, died on Friday.
His wife Karen told the BBC she had managed his illness "right up until the last few weeks".
Mrs Oakley confirmed the now-legendary story that her husband drew the design for the Chopper on an envelope as he travelled home from the USA, in 1967.
Initially inspired to replicate the design of Peter Fonda's motorbike in the classic movie Easy Rider, Mr Oakley came up with his drawing as he flew home from the trip, set up for him to "get-to-grips" with youth culture.

Bee Gees' singer Robin Gibb dies after cancer battle
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2012/05/2119.jpg
Bee Gees' singer Robin Gibb has died aged 62 after a long battle with colon and liver cancer, his family said.
They said they were making the announcement with "great sadness".
British-born Gibb's musical career began when he formed the Bee Gees with his brothers Barry and Maurice in 1958.
The group is among the biggest-selling groups of all time with hits spanning six decades including Stayin' Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Massachusetts and Night Fever.
Broadcaster Paul Gambaccini described the singer as "one of the major figures in the history of British music".
Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Read described Gibb's death as a "tragedy".
'Monumental accomplishments'
The Bee Gees notched up record sales of more than 200 million since their first hits in the 1960s.
The brothers were born in the Isle of Man but grew up in Manchester, later moving to Australia.
"Everyone should be aware that the Bee Gees are second only to Lennon and McCartney as the most successful songwriting unit in British popular music," said Gambaccini.
"Their accomplishments have been monumental.
"Not only have they written their own number one hits, but they wrote huge hit records for Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Celine Dion, Destiny's Child, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, the list goes on and on.
"What must also be said is Robin had one of the best white soul voices ever. He was singing lead on his first number one when he was 17, that was Massachusetts."
'Thanks for the music'
Gibb's family said in a statement: "The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery.
"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."
A statement from Sony Music on Twitter said: "Rest in peace, Robin Gibb. Thanks for the music."
Gibb's twin brother and band partner Maurice died in 2003 at the age of 53 following complications from a twisted intestine.
Robin was diagnosed with cancer of the colon after having surgery on his bowel 18 months ago for an unrelated condition.
He was later also diagnosed with cancer of the liver, and underwent chemotherapy and surgery.
Last month, the singer fell into a coma after contracting pneumonia but a week later he regained consciousness.
Gibb's son Robin-John said at the time: "They (doctors) gave him an under 10% survival chance and he has beaten the odds... he really is something else."
Didn't realise just how many other songs were written by the brothers:
Quote:
Songs written by the Gibbs, but largely better known through versions by other artists, include:
- "Ain't Nothing Gonna Keep Me From You" by Teri DeSario
- "Buried Treasure" by Kenny Rogers (backing vocals The Gatlin Brothers)
- "Chain Reaction" by Diana Ross
- "Come on Over" by Olivia Newton-John
- "Emotion" by Samantha Sang and by Destiny's Child
- "Gilbert Green" by Gerry Marsden
- "Grease" by Frankie Valli
- "Guilty" and "Woman in Love" by Barbra Streisand
- "Heartbreaker" & "All the Love in the World" by Dionne Warwick
- "Hold On to My Love" by Jimmy Ruffin
- "I Will Be There" by Tina Turner
- "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman
- "Immortality" by Celine Dion
- "Islands in the Stream" by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton
- "Morning of My Life" by Abi and Esther Ofarim and by Mary Hopkin
- "Only One Woman" by The Marbles
- "Rest Your Love on Me" by Conway Twitty
- "Sacred Trust" by One True Voice
- "Warm Ride" by Graham Bonnet and by Rare Earth
- "Woman In Love" by Barbra Streisand
Most of those songs sound like they could be sung by The Bee GeesQuote:

^ No, a bit late like Robin, really.:)
They were all done when he went into that coma
It's sad when any of the people we knew as we grew up pass away. Only just makes us ALL remember that our own time is NOT going to last forever. It is short life no matter how long you live, it should be fun.
^ Your a bad mother fvcker mate. :)
Very sad news indeed ,R.I.P Robin.
