Jessica Walter Dies: Emmy-Winning ‘Arrested Development’, ‘Archer’ Actress Was 80

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-walter_image002-jpg

Jessica Walter, the award-winning actress whose career spanned six decades, passed away in her sleep at home in New York City on Wednesday, March 24. She was 80.

Walter’s career included everything from a standout turn in Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut, Play Misty for Me, to The Flamingo Kid and her Emmy-nominated turns on Trapper John M..D. and Streets of San Francisco. For her performance as Lucille Bluth in
Arrested Development, Walter earned yet another Emmy nomination and two SAG nominations.

Walter won an Emmy starring in Amy Prentiss, an Ironside spinoff in the mid-1970s about a young San Francisco police detective. She also voiced Malory
Archer on FXX’s animated series Archer.

Walter served as 2nd National Vice President of the Screen Actors Guild, and was an elected member of the SAG Board of Directors for over a decade.

As news of her passing spread, Walter’s Arrested co-stars and many others began to weigh in, with co-star David Cross calling her “an absolutely brilliant actress and amazing talent.” See those tributes here.

Walter began her career in her hometown of New York City where she appeared in numerous Broadway productions including Advise and Consent, Neil Simon’s Rumors, A Severed Head, Nightlife and Photo Finish, for which she earned the Clarence Derwent Award for Most Promising Newcomer.

Also on stage, Walter worked at New York’s Playwright’s Horizons and the Los Angeles Theater Center, where she starred in Tartuffe opposite the late Ron Leibman, her Emmy- and Tony-winning husband. She also starred in the
Broadway revival of Anything Goes, which picked up several Tony Awards.

Walter is survived by daughter Brooke Bowman, who is SVP Drama Programming at Fox Entertainment, and grandson Micah Heymann.

Bowman said in a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of my beloved mom Jessica. A working actor for over six decades, her greatest pleasure was bringing joy to others through her storytelling both on screen and off. While her legacy will live on through her body of work, she will also be remembered by many for her wit, class and overall joie de vivre.”

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to
    Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

Baroness Shirley Williams: Former cabinet minister dies aged 90

Veteran politician and Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Shirley Williams has died at the age of 90, the party has announced.
She was hailed as a "Liberal lion and a true trailblazer" by Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey.
Originally a Labour MP, she was part of the "Gang of Four" who quit the party to found the Social Democratic Party.
She was a leading member of the 1970s Labour government and one of the first women cabinet ministers.
She later went on to support the SDP's merger with the Liberal Party, which led to the creation of the Liberal Democrats in the late 1980s.
Her career in politics spanned more than 50 years, after she first entered Parliament as the Labour MP for Hitchin in 1964.
She retired from political life in 2016, after leading the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords.
The Lib Dems said she died peacefully in the early hours of Monday.
Sir Ed said she had been an "inspiration to millions," and news of her death was "heartbreaking for me and for our whole Liberal Democrat family".
"Political life will be poorer without her intellect, her wisdom and her generosity," he added.
"Shirley had a limitless empathy only too rare in politics today; she connected with people, cared about their lives and saw politics as a crucial tool to change lives for the better."
Prime Minister Boris Johnson described her as "a kind and thoughtful member of the once radical centre left".
"Even when we disagreed - as we often did - she had the gift of sounding so completely reasonable at all times.
"I spent many happy hours sparring with her on Question Time. She will be much missed."

I started watching Arrested Development after seeing Jessica Walters died. That is a great comedy series and I don’t know how I’ve missed seeing it. Jessica Walters is wickedly funny as the alcoholic matriarch of the family. Catch it sometime. Worth your time.

Former US vice-president Walter Mondale dies at 93

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-773x435_cmsv2_2e0a18f5-7393-5d0e-ba37-3218cf578347-5575744-a

Walter Mondale, the US vice president under Jimmy Carter between 1977 and 1981, died Monday. He was 93.

The death of the former senator, ambassador and Minnesota attorney general was announced in a statement from his family. No cause was cited.

Mondale followed the trail blazed by his political mentor, Hubert H. Humphrey, from Minnesota politics to the U.S. Senate and the vice presidency, serving under Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981.

In a statement Monday night, Carter said he considered Mondale "the best vice president in our country's history."

Mondale's own try for the White House, in 1984, came at the zenith of Ronald Reagan's popularity.

His selection of Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his running mate made him the first major-party presidential nominee to put a woman on the ticket, but his declaration that he would raise taxes helped define the race.

    He lost by a landslide.

Mondale started his career in Washington in 1964, when he was appointed to the Senate to replace Humphrey, who had resigned to become vice president.

His Senate career was marked by advocacy of social issues such as education, housing, migrant workers and child nutrition. Like Humphrey, he was an outspoken supporter of civil rights.

Mondale tested the waters for a presidential bid in 1974 but ultimately decided against it. "Basically I found I did not have the overwhelming desire to be president, which is essential for the kind of campaign that is required," he said in November 1974.

In 1976, Carter chose Mondale as No. 2 on his ticket and went on to unseat Gerald Ford.

As vice president, Mondale had a close relationship with Carter.

He was the first vice president to occupy an office in the White House, rather than in a building across the street.

Mondale travelled extensively on Carter's behalf, and advised him on domestic and foreign affairs.

Johnny Crawford, Young Star of 'The Rifleman,' Dies at 75

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-42b15403-3fad-45af-8b10-a6bd17d10098-jpeg

He also appeared on the first season of 'The Mickey Mouse Club' and had hit songs on the Billboard Hot 100.
Johnny Crawford, the original Mouseketeer who starred as the young son of the Civil War veteran portrayed by Chuck Connors on the 1958-63 ABC series The Rifleman, died Thursday, it was announced. He was 75.

In 2019, it was revealed that Crawford had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and a GoFundMe campaign organized by Paul Petersen — the advocate for former child actors and onetime star of The Donna Reed Show — was set up to help the family deal with expenses.

Crawford was 12 when he appeared for the first time as Mark McCain, son of the widower Lucas McCain, on The Rifleman. The Four Star Television series, set in the New Mexico Territory with storylines crafted by Sam Peckinpah, ran for five seasons, from Sept. 30, 1958, to April 8, 1963, and then for decades in syndication and reruns.

Olympia Dukakis, Oscar Winner for 'Moonstruck,' Dies at 89

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-c6ee411b-2a9d-44ec-9a96-814edacba9de-jpeg
The veteran stage actress also appeared in 'Steel Magnolias,' 'Mr. Holland's Opus' and as a transgender landlady four times on 'Tales of the City.'
Olympia Dukakis, the dignified actress who received a supporting Oscar for her performance as Cher's nitpicking Brooklyn mother in Moonstruck, died Saturday. She was 89.

Dukakis died in New York, her brother Apollo wrote on Facebook. "After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her [husband] Louis."

The late-blooming star also was known for her turn as Clairee Belcher, a woman of fiber and the elegant widowed friend of Ouiser Boudreaux (Shirley MacLaine), in Herbert Ross' Steel Magnolias (1989), and she portrayed a personnel director in Working Girl (1988) and a principal in Mr. Holland's Opus (1995).

Away from the big screen, Dukakis taught drama at NYU for more than 15 years and was a founding member of two regional theaters: The Charles Playhouse in Boston and the Whole Theater in Montclair, New Jersey.

Her husband of 55 years, stage and character actor Louis Zorich (Paul Reiser's father Mad About You), died in January 2018 at age 93.

She was a first cousin of former Massachusetts governor and 1988 U.S. presidential candidate Michael Dukakis.

Songwriter, actor and director Chalee Intaravijit dies at 98

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-560ec5f5-8ade-4671-bb93-baa5bb010b42-jpeg

Well-rounded, artistic Thai jack-of-all-trades Chalee Intaravijit has died at the age of 98 after a full and diverse life as a songwriter, film director, theatre actor and more. Last night the artist passed away at Sirijaj Hospital.

Born on July 6 1923, his prolific career spanned more than 5 decades, and the National Cultural Commission named him a National Artist in Performing Arts for movie and drama in 1993. The commission recognises artists each year that contribute to Thai cultural heritage in intangible ways.

Originally from the Samut Sakhon province and named Sa-nga, he graduated from both Amnuaysilp School and the State Railway of Thailand Vocational School before pursuing the arts. He married Sirinthip Siriwan, an accomplished actress who was half Thai and half Dutch, and whose film career spanned 30 years from 1957 until her mysterious disappearance on the set of her last film “E Chu Ku Pu Pa”. To this day her whereabouts are unknown and no trace of her was ever found.

Chalee used the melody of the Bread song “Aubrey” and wrote Thai lyrics for the hit song “Mua Ther Chak Chan Pai” (in English, “When She Leaves Me”) as a tribute to his missing wife. It was performed by both Pornpimol Thammasan and later by Orawee Sajjanond. That was only one of nearly 1,000 songs Chalee penned in his prolific career. Other notable hits included Chamloey Rak, Mae Klong, Mon Rak Dok Kham Tai, Ruan Phae, Sadudee Maharaja, Saen Saeb, Sao Nakhon Chaisri, Tha Chalom, and Thung Ruang Thong.

He also had a storied run in the film industry where he acted in such films as Sawan Mued (1958), Jom Jai Wieng Fa (1962) and Ai Fang Ror For Thor (1982) and directed several successful films like Prasartsai (1969), Kiang Kaew (1970) and Sue Kamathep (1971).

No cause of death was reported as well as no immediate plans for funeral arrangements for his family or his fans.

Charles Grodin: Beethoven and The Heartbreak Kid actor dies aged 86

Charles Grodin, an American actor whose comic roles in films such as Midnight Run and Beethoven brought smiles to faces for decades, has died at 86.

Grodin died at his home in Wilton, Connecticut on Tuesday, the New York Times newspaper reported.

The actor's son, Nicholas, told the newspaper his cause of death was bone marrow cancer.

Known for his dry wit, Grodin was a familiar face in Hollywood comedies and prime-time talk shows in the US.

Tributes have been made on social media, including a tweet from fellow American actor Steve Martin, who described Grodin as "one of the funniest people I ever met".

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Grodin dropped his studies at the University of Miami to launch a career in acting.

It was a decision that paid off in the 1960s, when he started to land parts in plays on Broadway, including his debut in a production of Tchin-Tchin, which starred Anthony Quinn.

He soon moved to TV and film, building his profile with a small role in Rosemary's Baby, a 1968 psychological horror film written and directed by Roman Polanski.

But the 1970s was the decade Grodin's career really took off. A series of roles in films including Catch-22 in 1970 and The Heartbreak Kid in 1972 cemented his status as one of Hollywood's go-to comedy actors.

For his role in The Heartbreak Kid - in which he plays an unlucky-in-love sporting goods salesman - he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best actor.
The fact he didn't win the award may not have bothered him too much.

"I never complain about anything, because I'm aware of what's going on around me, and I'm also aware that there are a lot of very gifted people that never even get a job in show business," Grodin told the AV Club website in a 2009 interview. "It's just because they can't handle the rejection, and I can handle it, and I'm used to it."

Grodin had his share of success as well. He won best actor at the 1988 Valladolid International Film Festival for his role in Midnight Run. In that film, a 1988 action-comedy, he co-starred with Robert De Niro as an accountant who embezzled millions from a mob boss.

Grodin also won an Emmy as a co-writer on a 1977 Paul Simon TV special, hosted his own 1990s chat show, and was a regular fixture on shows hosted by Johnny Carson, David Letterman and Jay Leno.

Max Mosley: Former Formula 1 boss and privacy campaigner dies aged 81

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-skynews-max-mosley-f1_5393830-jpg

Former Formula 1 boss and privacy campaigner Max Mosley has died after suffering from cancer, aged 81.

Ex-F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone confirmed the news, saying he died on Sunday.

"He was like family to me," Mr Ecclestone said. "We were like brothers. I am pleased in a way because he suffered for too long."

As well as his years serving as one of the leading figures at the top of the motorsport world, Mr Mosley was also known for his campaigning efforts to strengthen press regulation.

He famously took the News Of The World to court in 2008 after the newspaper printed allegations about his private life, successfully suing its publisher after it wrongly reported he had attended a "Nazi-themed" sex party.

In 2011, the newspaper was shut down by owner Rupert Murdoch after the revelation that it had intercepted the voicemails of celebrities, crime victims and members of the Royal Family, and Mr Mosley later gave financial backing to the court costs of claimants in some newspaper phone hacking cases.

Born in London on 13 April 1940, Mr Mosley was the youngest son of 1930s British fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley.

Educated at Oxford, he was a racing driver, a team owner and a lawyer before becoming president of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the governing body for Formula 1, in 1993, following previous administrative roles in motorsport. He served four terms as president before standing down in 2009.

Paying tribute, an F1 spokesperson said: "We are saddened to hear that Max Mosley, former FIA President, has passed away. A huge figure in the transition of Formula 1. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time."

Mr Mosley and Mr Ecclestone were a close-knit double act, running the sport as it grew into a $1 billion business and pushing through much-needed safety measures.

In the wake of the death of Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna in 1994, Mr Mosley instituted widespread reform of safety in the sport. Two years later, in 1996, he led the FIA's successful campaign to modernise and strengthen EU crash test standards for the first time since 1974.

He received many government and industry awards, most notably the National de la Légion d'Honneur' in 2006, in recognition of his contribution to road safety and motorsport.

Current FIA president Jean Todt said in a statement posted on social media: "Deeply saddened by the passing of Max Mosley. He was a major figure in @F1 & motor sport. As @FIA President for 16 years, he strongly contributed to reinforcing safety on track & on the roads. The entire FIA community pays tribute to him. Our thoughts & prayers are with his family."
