Mossad agent who led Eichmann capture dies at 92

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-741306-jpg

Mossad agent Rafi Eitan, who led the Mossad's operation to capture Nazi Adolf Eichmann and bring him to trial, died on Saturday at 92.
Eitan was one of the founders of Israel's intelligence community, and he was a former chairman of the Pensioners' Party.

He also headed the Lekem intelligence agency during the period when Jonathan Pollard was employed as an Israeli spy in the US, and served as Minister of Pensioners' Affairs during former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's term (2006-2009).

While serving as head of the Mossad's operational division, Eitan commanded the operation to capture Adolf Eichmann in Argentina.

The operation was successful and Eichman stood trial in Israel and was thereafter executed.

On Saturday, Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital announced: "Minister and intelligence official Rafael (Rafi) Eitan died of old age at the age of 92. The family thanks the hospital for the dedicated care he received. Additional details will be announced by the family at a later date."

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin mourned Eitan, commenting: "We have lost a brave fighter whose contribution to Israel's security will be taught for generations to come. Rafi was a born fighter who stuck to his mission and to what he knew to be right."

"Our heads are bowed today in his memory, and we part from him in sorrow and thanks, and with deep appreciation for his contribution to the people and the country."

Scott Walker, singer-songwriter and 60s music icon dies at 76

The death of the voice behind 60s hit 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine' was announced by his record label today.

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-0_cd670339-1-jpg

The Walker Brothers star Scott Walker has died aged 76, his record label said.

The US pop trio enjoyed hits like The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore and Make It Easy On Yourself in the 1960s.

The band moved to Britain and at one point their fame in their adopted country rivalled that of The Beatles.

Record label 4AD said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Scott Walker.

"Scott was 76 years old and is survived by his daughter, Lee, his granddaughter, Emmi-Lee, and his partner, Beverly.

"For half a century, the genius of the man born Noel Scott Engel has enriched the lives of thousands, first as one third of The Walker Brothers, and later as a solo artist, producer and composer of uncompromising originality.

"Scott Walker has been a unique and challenging titan at the forefront of British music, audacious and questioning, he has produced works that dare to explore human vulnerability and the godless darkness encircling it."

Walker, who was born in the US, began his career as a session bassist, changing his name when he joined The Walker Brothers.

He later shunned the limelight and released solo albums including Scott, Scott 2, Scott 3 and Scott 4.

In the 1970s The Walker Brothers reunited for their last album together.

In 2017, Scott's music was celebrated with a Proms concert at London's Royal Albert Hall.

The record label said the singer "has been one of the most revered innovators at the sharp end of creative music".

Lieutenant general Dong Sy Nguyen, who commandeered the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail that helped Vietnam defeat the U.S., has died.

Nguyen, former Vice President of the Council of Ministers and a member of the Politburo, the decision-making body of Vietnam Communist Party, died Thursday at the 108 Military Central Hospital in Hanoi after a long period of sickness.

Born in 1923 as Nguyen Huu Vu in the central province of Quang Binh, Nguyen joined the revolution at age 15 and became a member of the party a year later.

He participated in French resistance movements, holding several key positions.

In early 1967, during the Vietnam War, he was appointed commander in chief of Group 559, the transportation and logistical unit of the People's Army of Vietnam.

The group was established in 1959 to move troops, weapons, and material from North Vietnam to paramilitary units in southern Vietnam via the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which ran along the central region across Truong Son, or the Annamite Mountain Range, and through Laos and Cambodia.

During eight years as commander of the trail until the war ended in 1975, he transformed it from an old low-key covert supply line into a modern, strategic, overt battlefield.

Much of his success is owed to the fact that he converted most of his force, which had previously used foot power or bicycles to carry loads, into vehicle transportation units.

Charles Van Doren, Disgraced TV Quiz Show Champion, Dies at 93

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-twenty_one_tv_2-h_2017-jpg

After winning $128,000 on 'Twenty One' in 1957, he joined 'Today' before a government investigation uncovered he was given answers in advance.

Charles Van Doren, who became a nationwide celebrity in 1956 as a contestant on the NBC quiz show Twenty One only to be shamed two years later when a congressional investigation revealed the contest had been rigged, has died. He was 93.

Van Doren died Tuesday in a retirement community in Canaan, Connecticut, his son, John, told The New York Times.

The son of Mark Van Doren, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and literary critic/teacher, and novelist/writer Dorothy Van Doren, Charles also was the nephew of Pulitzer-winning biographer Carl Van Doren. With a master's degree in astrophysics and Ph.D. in English from Columbia University, where he was a professor, he was no intellectual slouch himself.

His academic pedigree and cool, sophisticated manner made Van Doren, then 30, an appealing candidate for the game show in which players tried to amass 21 points by answering questions assigned a number value up to 11. Higher-numbered questions were more difficult.

"For 14 weeks in the winter and spring of 1956-57, I came into millions of American homes, stood in a supposedly soundproof booth and answered difficult questions," Van Doren recounted in a 2008
first-person article for The New Yorker. "I was considered well spoken, well educated, handsome — the very image of a young man that parents would like their son to be. I was also thought to be the ideal teacher, which is to say patient, thoughtful, trustworthy, caring. In addition, I was making a small fortune."

As Van Doren revealed in the piece, he didn't own a TV at the time, and it was merely by chance that he was swept up into the frenzy that brought him fame and then infamy. He happened to meet television producer Albert Freedman at a dinner party, and the more they talked, the more Freedman liked what he saw in Van Doren.

Herb Stempel, the reigning champ of Twenty One, was wearing out his welcome. The longer his run, the more the ratings dipped. The show's producers, Dan Enright and host Jack Barry, and sponsor, Geritol, wanted an appealing candidate to dethrone Stempel. Freedman knew about Van Doren's background and thought viewers would embrace this urbane intellectual.

Van Doren was coaxed into trying out for the show, and all agreed he was perfect. He was obviously smart enough to be a contender, and Freedman showed up at his Manhattan apartment to help coach him.

"He came right out and said it: 'I've thought about it, Charlie, and I've decided you should be the person to beat Stempel. And I'll help you do it,' " Van Doren wrote in The New Yorker. "He held up his hand. 'I swear to you, no one will ever know. It will be just between you and me. Jack Barry won't know and Dan Enright won't, either. Stempel won't know — I've got a way to handle that. The sponsors won't know — anyway, they'll be so happy they won't give a damn. And the audience will never know, because I won't tell them, and you won't, either.' "

Freedman said he would feed Van Doren the questions in advance. The producer won over Van Doren by convincing him that this was merely entertainment and that he stood to win thousands of dollars. So, Van Doren made his first Twenty One appearance on Nov. 28, 1956.

Stempel and Van Doren finished a few games in a tie — as the producers had planned — and the two returned the following week to battle again. This time, Van Doren outscored Stempel to become the new king as an estimated 50 million people tuned in to witness the battle of the brains.

In the ensuing weeks as he fended off challenger after challenger, Freedman never stopped coaching Van Doren, he wrote in the New Yorker, not only giving the contestant answers but also instructing him how to deliver them for the best dramatic payoff. Van Doren became so popular, Time magazine featured him on its Feb. 11, 1957, cover with the caption "Brains Vs Dollars on TV."

After several games on Twenty One with attorney Vivienne Nearing ended in a tie, Freedman signaled to Van Doren that it was time for him to go home. He stumbled when asked to name the kings of Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Jordan, Iraq and Belgium and departed with a check for $128,000 (more than $1.1 million in today's dollars) on March 11, 1957.

For a time, life was good. Van Doren married his fiancee, Geraldine Bernstein, and signed a three-year contract with NBC as a consultant on public service and educational broadcasting at a substantial salary.

After a few unimpressive on-air assignments, including a stint as a White House correspondent, Van Doren found his niche doing segments for Dave Garroway on a Sunday afternoon cultural show, Wide Wide World. He then joined Garroway on the Today show, where his pieces usually focused on cultural and literary happenings.

In summer 1958, stories started to surface about corruption on TV quiz shows. In October, Van Doren was approached by Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joseph Stone and asked to sit for questioning about what he knew about alleged tampering on Twenty One. Van Doren held fast at first, telling Stone he never was fed answers.

Van Doren next found himself lying to a grand jury, repeating the story he had told Stone. In August 1959, Richard Goodwin, an investigator for a subcommittee of the House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, called upon Van Doren.

As Van Doren remembered in The New Yorker, "What Goodwin said scared me. He told me that his subcommittee planned to hold hearings on the matter of the television quiz shows; clearly, the grand jury's work had made its way to Washington. Goodwin opened a folder and pointed to part of a transcript of the grand jury proceedings. In the page or two that I read, Herb Stempel was testifying. I had thought the testimony was sealed, but evidently not. He went on to tell me that my testimony contradicted what Stempel said and, worse, that Freedman and Enright had returned to the grand jury and confirmed what Stempel had said."

On Nov. 2, 1959, Van Doren appeared before the subcommittee and came clean. He pleaded guilty to perjury in the second degree for lying to the grand jury, a misdemeanor (he served no jail time). NBC opted not to renew his contract, and he was forced to resign from Columbia.

Other producers on other shows were eventually found to be messing with their programs as well.

As the new decade began, Van Doren secured a position as an editor-in-chief at the Encyclopaedia Britannica with the help of Mortimer J. Adler, a friend of his father's. In 1965, he and his wife and two kids relocated to Chicago, and during his 17 years at Britannica headquarters, he wrote and edited a number of books and co-authored the 1972 revised edition of Alder's renowned 1940 publication, How to Read a Book.

After retiring from Encyclopaedia Britannica in 1982, Van Doren wrote or co-authored several books himself.

In 1994, Robert Redford directed Quiz Show, a fictional retelling of the scandal. Ralph Fiennes played Van Doren and John Turturro portrayed Stempel. Van Doren was approached to consult on the project but declined. He never spoke publicly about his Twenty One experience until his story in The New Yorker ran in 2008.

Irvine Welsh leads tributes to T2 star Bradley Welsh shot dead in Edinburgh
Former boxing champion found in city’s West End with gunshot wound and died at scene
    18 April 2019

The author Irvine Welsh has led tributes to the Trainspotting 2 star Bradley Welsh, who has been shot dead in Edinburgh.

The 42-year-old former boxing champion and reformed football hooligan was killed near his home in the West End of the city on Wednesday. Police said they found a man with serious injuries on Chester Street who died at the scene.

Welsh said his “heart is broken”, adding: “Goodbye my amazing and beautiful friend. Thanks for making me a better person and helping me to see the world in a kinder and wiser way.”

Welsh, who was born in Moredun, a district of Edinburgh, starred alongside Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle in T2 Trainspotting, playing the role of gangland figure Mr Doyle.

The former British ABA lightweight boxing champion and Hibernian football fan was involved in charity projects in Edinburgh, including helping young people stay away from crime through his Holyrood Boxing Gym. He also appeared in Danny Dyer’s Deadliest Men and The Real Football Factories, describing himself as a “born leader”.

    Boxing and charity work

At 18, he was sent to jail for extortion and he says this was a pivotal moment in his life, as he realised the money wasn't worth it.

Determined to turn his life around, he returned to boxing after leaving jail.

Success in the sport would follow and he became British ABA Lightweight boxing champion.

He opened Holyrood Boxing Gym aged 30, "giving kids the opportunity to use physical fitness to better themselves."

Paranormal Investigator Lorraine Warren Dies At 92
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS April 20, 2019

Monroe, Conn. (AP) -- World-wide paranormal investigator and author Lorraine Warren, whose decades of ghost-hunting cases with her late husband inspired such frightening films as "The Conjuring" series and "The Amityville Horror," died. She was 92.

Warren's son-in-law Tony Spera and grandson Chris McKinnell posted Friday on Facebook that Warren died in her sleep Thursday night at her Connecticut home. Phone messages and emails were left with several of Warren's family members. Warren's attorney, Gary Barkin, confirmed his client's death via email to The Associated Press.

"She was a remarkable, loving, compassionate and giving soul," Spera wrote.

The Warrens founded the New England Society for Psychic Research in Monroe, Connecticut, in 1952 to investigate suspected hauntings. The group also posted of her passing on Facebook.

During their 61 years of marriage, Lorraine and Ed Warren investigated more than 10,000 cases in the U.S. and abroad, often writing about their experiences. Their unusual profession has been credited with sparking popular interest in the paranormal, as well as the television shows and films now dedicated to the subject.

"When nobody was really even talking about ghosts, they were just two people from Bridgeport, Connecticut, who came together and fell in love and Ed happened to have had a lot of paranormal instances when he was growing up and Lorraine was always the sensitive clairvoyant," said Larry Dwyer, a staff writer at the Horror News Network, a website that covers the horror film industry. He said the couple realized they could use their "gifts" and Catholic faith to help people who believed they were being tormented by ghosts or demons.

Ed Warren died in 2006 and Spera now oversees the New England Society for Psychic Research. The organization's website said Lorraine Warren had "decided to retire from active investigations regarding the areas of haunted homes and demonic infestations/possessions" but was still a consultant to the organization at the time of her death.
The Warrens' work did receive criticism from doubters over the years. The New England Skeptical Society in 1997 said the Warrens' "copious anecdotal evidence" of reports of hauntings vastly outnumbered their "low-grade physical evidence."

Warren told The AP in a 2013 interview that she understood it was very difficult for people to accept she could see ghosts if they had never seen one themselves.
"I hope you never will," she said. "I really don't."

The 2013 film "The Conjuring" is based on the couple's investigation into alleged events at a Rhode Island farmhouse in the 1970s. Lorraine Warren visited the set during the filming. She also spent time at her Connecticut home with actress Vera Farmiga, who portrays Warren in the movie and its sequels. Farmiga expressed her condolences on Twitter Friday, saying she was "blessed to have known" Warren and "honored to portray her."

Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew dies aged 73

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-image-jpg

Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca in Star Wars, has died at the age of 74.

In a statement on Twitter, his family said he died on April 30 at his home in Texas.

They said: "The family of Peter Mayhew, with deep love and sadness, regrets to share the news that Peter has passed away.

"He left us the evening of April 30, 2019 with his family by his side in his North Texas home."

Mayhew, who was 7ft 3ins and British, played Wookiee warrior Chewbacca in Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), Revenge Of The Sith (2005) and The Force Awakens (2015).

He became a naturalised US citizen in 2005 and is survived by his wife, Angie, and his three children.

The family's statement added: "He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame of the films from his knock-kneed running, firing his bowcaster from the hip, his bright blue eyes, down to each subtle movement of his head and mouth.

"But, to him, the Star Wars family meant so much more to him than a role in a film.

"The relationships that began then grew into the friends and family that he would love for decades to come. As the films released and became more well known, he had his eyes opened to the possibilities of what he could achieve with his role in the Star Wars universe.

"For more than 30 years Peter travelled all over the world spending time with fans and friends. Peter developed lifelong friendships with the other cast members and his fans while on the convention circuit touching the lives of millions."

Freddie Starr found dead at home in Spain aged 76 – reports

Comedian discovered in his chair by carer after possible heart attack, say neighbours

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-3260-jpg

The comedian Freddie Starr has died aged 76 at his home in
    Spain, according to reports.

Posts on social media pages claiming to belong to Starr appeared to confirm the news.

“This is Freddie’s manager. Just to confirm Freddie has passed away. R.i.p to our greatest comedian of all time,” a brief statement on Facebook read.

Merseyside-born Starr was the lead singer of the Merseybeat group the Midnighters during the 1960s and rose to national prominence in the early 1970s after appearing on Opportunity Knocks.

His body was reportedly discovered by a carer at his apartment in Mijas on the Costa del Sol.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, told the Mirror: “His carer found him dead in his chair at around 3.30pm. Police arrived first and then later an ambulance arrived and he was taken away.

“His next door neighbour, who is a nurse, said he was definitely dead. She said she thinks he may have suffered a heart attack.”

Another neighbour added: “He’s been quite ill ever since he moved in and has barely left his apartment since moving in a couple of years ago.”

At the height of his fame, Starr was known by fans for his eccentric and often unpredictable behaviour.

In 1986 he was famously at the centre of one of the best-known newspaper headlines when The Sun splashed with: “Freddie Starr ate my hamster.”

The story claimed Starr placed the creature between two slices of bread and ate it at a friend’s home after returning from a performance in Manchester. But in his 2001 autobiography Unwrapped, Starr said the incident never took place.

Sargent also won WGA Awards for all three of those films and received the guild’s career honor, the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, in 1991.

Sargent penned more than two dozen feature screenplays from the 1960s into the 2010s, most recently The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Spider-Man 3 (2007) and Spider-Man 2 (2004). His feature credits also include What About Bob? (1991), Other People’s Money (1991) and Unfaithful (2002).

He began his screenwriting career in television, penning episodes of such 1960s drama series Ben Casey, Route 66, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Run for Your Life. He also wrote episodes of ABC’s short-lived Paper Moon spinoff series in which Jodie Foster played the role that won Tatum O’Neal a Supporting Actress Oscar.

Born on April 12, 1927, in Philadelphia, Sargent had been working as an ad salesman at Variety in the early 1950s while aspiring to act. He’d been on the job for three weeks when he was offered a non-speaking role in a little film called From Here to Eternity. The trade pub granted him a leave of absence to shoot the movie, and when director Fred Zinnemann was unhappy with another actor’s line reading, Sargent was ordered to replace him. His character would announce the beginning of World War II and its first American casualty.

Zinnemann would win the Best Director Oscar for that classic film, which also scored Best Picture and six other Academy Awards. Nearly a quarter-century later, Sargent penned Julia (1977), which won him his first Oscar and earned Zinnemann a seventh nom for Best Director. It starred Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave and Hal Holbrook and introduced Meryl Streep to movie audiences.

After his stint on From Here to Eternity, Sargent returned to Variety but proved rather lousy as selling ads. In his off hours, he wrote stories in his basement — one of which a friend sent to lit agent Sam Adams. He got the young scribe a TV writing job, and Sargent wrote the script. Then he didn’t hear from Adams — or anyone else in Hollywood — for more than a year.

On Christmas Eve 1961, Sargent got an unexpected call. It was Adams asking if the scribe could do an emergency rewrite for one of the vacationing writers of CBS’ long-running series General Electric Theater. Sargent delivered the rewrite four days later and never went another day as an unemployed writer. His final script was for The Amazing Spider Man, which he finished at age 85.

Sargent won his second Oscar for Ordinary People, ensemble drama about a family’s grief over the death of a son that puts their relationships to the test. Starring Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore and Timothy Hutton, it also would win Best Picture and Best Director for Robert Redford.

In between he also penned features including Gambit (1966), The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972), Bobby Deerfield (1974), Straight Time (1978), Dominick and Eugene (1988), Bogus (1996) and Anywhere but Here (1999), among others.

Ever the scribe, Sargent was quoted as saying, “When I die, I’m going to have written on my tombstone, ‘Finally a plot.'”

His older brother was the prolific comedy writer Herb Sargent, an original member of the Saturday Night Live staff who co-created “Weekend Update” with Chevy Chase, won several Emmys and also wrote for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Herb Sargent died in 2005.

Alvin Sargent was married to Joan Camden from 1953-75, and he later was married to producer and Stand Up to Cancer co-founder Laura Ziskin until her death in 2011. Survivors include daughters Jennifer Sargent and Amanda Sargent, several grandchildren and a great-grandchild, as well as Ziskin’s daughter Julia Barry.

A memorial service will be held in Los Angeles, but no date has been announced. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to Stand Up to Cancer, which Laura Ziskin co-founded in 2008.

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-9845616-jpg

Doris Day, whose wholesome screen presence stood for a time of innocence in films in the 1960s, has died aged 97.
The actress died at her home in Carmel Valley, California, the Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed.

The foundation said she was surrounded by close friends and “had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia”.

She was known as a honey-voiced singer and actress whose film dramas, musicals and innocent sex comedies made her a top star in the 1950s and 1960s and among the most popular screen actresses in history.

Day’s lilting voice, wholesome beauty and ultra-bright smile brought her a string of hits, first on records, later in Hollywood.

Bob Hawke: Australia's former PM dies at 89

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-_106983511_mediaitem106983507-jpg

Former Australian prime minister and Labor Party leader Bob Hawke, who dominated the country's politics in the 1980s, has died at the age of 89.

The charismatic and beloved politician led the country from 1983 to 1991 and is credited with reforms that modernised the economy.

He remains the longest-serving prime minister of Australia's centre-left Labor Party.

His wife said in a statement that he died "peacefully at home".

"Today we lost Bob Hawke, a great Australian - many would say the greatest Australian of the post-war era," Blanche D'Alpuget said in a statement.

Mr Hawke joined the Labor Party at 18 in 1947 and would go on to win a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford in 1953.

He later joined the trade union movement, rising to become president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions by 1969.

He first won a seat in parliament in 1980 and became Labor leader in 1983. He and Labor won a general election by a landslide soon after.

Mr Hawke was known for his maverick style, and set a record for beer drinking while at Oxford. He cried publicly a number of times - most famously in 1989 at a memorial service at Parliament House following the crackdown on Chinese students at Beijing's Tiananmen square.

I.M. Pei, a pillar of modern architecture, dies at 102

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-1b93ec57-11f2-4f2f-86bf-91ee3bdc9887-jpeg

I.M. Pei -- the famed Chinese American architect best known for his work at one of the most famous landmarks in Paris -- has died.

Pei died Wednesday night, according to architecture critic and writer Paul Goldberger, who says he got the news from Pei's son.

Pei -- who launched his career with a New York real estate developer in 1948 after graduating from Harvard -- is best known for designing the glass and steel Louvre Pyramid ... which serves as the entrance to the Louvre Museum. It was completed in 1989.

His other major works in his long and illustrious career include the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in D.C. in 1978 as well as the JFK Library in Boston and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland in 1995.

All in all, Pei designed over 50 projects in the U.S. and internationally -- including in France, China, Japan, Luxembourg and Qatar -- many of which won awards for their excellence.

Goldberger says his buildings in Boulder, Colorado are among his best and most underrated.

Herman Wouk, author of 'The Caine Mutiny' and 'The Winds of War,' dies at 103

    The RIP Famous Person Thread-800px-hw_2014-640x400-jpg

(Reuters) - Author Herman Wouk, whose World War Two experiences provided the foundation of his bestseller “The Caine Mutiny” and two epic novels about the war, died on Friday at the age of 103, his literary agent said.

Wouk, whose “War and Remembrance” and “The Winds of War” were turned into popular television miniseries in the 1980s, died in his sleep at his home in Palm Springs, California, Amy Rennert said.

He died 10 days before what would have been his 104th birthday, Rennert said.

Wouk was 100 years old when his final book “Sailor and Fiddler,” a memoir about his career as a writer and his Jewish faith, was published in December 2015.

He continued to write, even after stating that “Sailor and Fiddler” would be his last book, and was working on his next book up until a month ago, Rennert said.

Some critics dismissed Wouk as a middlebrow writer but his books - many of them bestsellers with a focus on moral dilemmas - showed a broad range.

In addition to his war tales, Wouk’s books included a comic novel (“Don’t Stop the Carnival”), a “Jewish-American princess” novel (“Marjorie Morningstar”), a novel about the publishing business (“Youngblood Hawke”) and theological musings as an Orthodox Jew (“This Is My God,” “The Will to Live On”).

“If they’re reading, then I’ve done what I set out to do,” Wouk said of his audience in a 2000 Washington Post interview. “... And so far, so good.”

Wouk was a show-business joke writer before the 1951 novel “The Caine Mutiny,” his third book, put him in the literary big time. It featured the paranoid, incompetent, ball-bearing-rattling Captain Queeg, who was later memorably portrayed in the movie version by Humphrey Bogart, and won Wouk a Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

“The Caine Mutiny” was on the New York Times bestseller list for more than two years, has sold millions of copies and is still in print.

Born in New York to Russian-Jewish immigrants, Wouk grew up in the New York borough of the Bronx and graduated at 19 from Columbia University. A stint as a joke writer for radio comedian Fred Allen was followed by wartime service in the South Pacific as an officer aboard destroyer-minesweepers.

That experience stripped away what Wouk once called “the hard shell of a New York wise guy” whose ambition had been to write Broadway farces. It also provided material for “The Caine Mutiny” and spurred him to explain the conflict in personal and historical terms.

He returned from the war determined to lead a different sort of life “because of the intensity of that experience,” he said. “It made me a writer.”

Wouk’s play “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” made its debut on Broadway in 1954, starring Henry Fonda, and has been revived twice.

Wouk felt “The Caine Mutiny” was merely an anecdote about World War Two rather than an exploration of the global conflict. Twenty years of research and writing led to “The Winds of War” in 1971 and its sequel, “War and Remembrance,” seven years later. Both books were more than 900 pages and were turned into successful television miniseries.

Wouk also worked with pop singer Jimmy Buffett to make a musical of “Don’t Stop the Carnival,” his 1965 novel about a New York public relations man who opens a Caribbean hotel. He was 97 when “The Lawgiver,” a satirical tale about making a movie based on the biblical figure Moses, was published.

Wouk divided his time between homes in Washington and Palm Springs, California. Wouk and wife Sarah, who worked as his agent, were married for 66 years until her 2011 death. They had three sons, one of whom died in childhood.

Wouk’s brother Victor, who died in 2005, was an early pioneer of alternative-fuel cars.

Formula 1 legend Niki Lauda dies, aged 70

Photo / Getty ImagesFormula One legend Niki Lauda who survived horrendous burns to become an airline entrepreneur has died aged 70, after a period of ill health.

Lauda won the F1 drivers' championship in 1975 and 1977 with Ferrari and again in 1984 with McLaren.

In 1976, he was badly burned when he crashed during the German Grand Prix, but made an astonishingly fast return to racing just six weeks later.

The comeback became the stuff of legend and his battle with Britain's James Hunt was the subject of the hit movie 'Rush.'

Lauda has twice undergone kidney transplants, in 1997 and 2005. His brother Florian donated an organ for the first operation and his wife Brigit did the same for the second.

Journalist Thomas Meyer from Der Standard tweeted: 'Niki Lauda is dead! The legendary Formula One World Champion was 70 years old.'

After retirement from racing he also became an airline entrepreneur, and had agreed to sell his controlling stake in Laudamotion to Ryanair.

At the start of the year Lauda was in hospital in Vienna with the flu, five months after undergoing a lung transplant.

He was flown in early January from the Spanish island of Ibiza where he had been vacationing to a hospital in the Austrian capital.

Lauda, who received a new lung on August 2 last year, was non-executive chairman of Mercedes.

He has had a close working relationship with five-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and was involved in helping to sign the British driver from McLaren for the 2013 season.

Hamilton has won four of his titles with Mercedes, including the past two and in 2014 and '15

^^ Always seemed like a true gent, who commanded respect even from people with no interest in motorsport.

    People like...me, for example.

His return within weeks from that horrible accident took true cojones.
