LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gavin MacLeod, the veteran supporting actor who achieved fame as sardonic TV news writer Murray Slaughter on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and stardom playing cheerful Capt. Stubing on “The Love Boat,” has died. He was 90.


MacLeod died early Saturday at his home in Palm Desert, California, said Stephanie Steele Zalin, his stepdaughter. She attributed his death to his age, saying he had been well until very recently.

F. Lee Bailey, the celebrity attorney who defended O.J. Simpson, Patricia Hearst and the alleged Boston Strangler, but whose legal career halted when he was disbarred in two states, has died, a former colleague said Thursday. He was 87. Bailey died at a hospital in the Atlanta area, according to Kenneth Fishman, Bailey's former law partner who went on to become a Superior Court judge in Massachusetts.

Fishman did not disclose the cause of death, but said Bailey had moved to Georgia about a year ago to be closer to one of his sons and had been dealing with several medical issues for the past few months.
"In many respects, he was the model of what a criminal defense attorney should be in terms of preparation and investigation," said Fishman, whose legal association and friendship with Bailey dates to 1975.

In a career that lasted more than four decades, Bailey was seen as arrogant, egocentric and contemptuous of authority. But he was also acknowledged as bold, brilliant, meticulous and tireless in the defense of his clients.

"The legal profession is a business with a tremendous collection of egos," Bailey said an in interview with U.S. News and World Report in September 1981. "Few people who are not strong egotistically gravitate to it."

Some of Bailey's other high-profile clients included Dr. Samuel Sheppard — accused of killing his wife — and Captain Ernest Medina, charged in connection with the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War.


"I have never known a greater intellect than that possessed by F. Lee Bailey," said J. Albert Johnson, Bailey's longtime legal partner and childhood friend.

Bailey, an avid pilot, best-selling author and television show host, was a member of the legal "dream team" that defended Simpson, the former star NFL running back and actor acquitted on charges that he killed his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in 1995.

In a tweet Thursday, Simpson said, "I lost a great one. F Lee Bailey you will be missed."

Bailey was the most valuable member of the team, Simpson said in a 1996 story in The Boston Globe Magazine.
"He was able to simplify everything and identify what the most vital parts of the case were," Simpson said. "Lee laid down what the case's strategy was, what was going to be important and what was not. I thought he had an amazing grasp of what was going to be the most important parts of the case, and that turned out to be true."

Bailey earned acquittals for many of his clients, but he also lost cases, most notably Hearst's.

Hearst, a publishing heiress, was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army terrorist group on February 4, 1974, and participated in armed robberies with the group. At trial, Bailey claimed she was coerced into participating because she feared for her life. She still was convicted.

Hearst called Bailey an "ineffective counsel" who reduced the trial to "a mockery, a farce, and a sham," in a declaration she signed with a motion to reduce her sentence. Hearst accused him of sacrificing her defense in an effort to get a book deal about the case.

She was released in January 1979 after President Jimmy Carter commuted her sentence.

Bailey made his name as the attorney for Sheppard, an Ohio osteopath convicted in 1954 of murdering his wife.
Sheppard spent more than a decade behind bars before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a landmark 1966 decision that "massive, pervasive, prejudicial publicity" had violated his rights. Bailey helped win an acquittal at a second trial.

Bailey also defended Albert DeSalvo, the man who claimed responsibility for the Boston Strangler murders between 1962 and 1964. DeSalvo confessed to the slayings, but was never tried or convicted, and later recanted. Despite doubts thrown on DeSalvo's claim, Bailey always maintained that DeSalvo was the strangler.

Throughout his career, Bailey antagonized authorities with his sometimes abrasive style and his quest for publicity. He was censured by a Massachusetts judge in 1970 for "his philosophy of extreme egocentricity," and was disbarred for a year in New Jersey in 1971 for talking publicly about a case.

Bailey was disbarred in Florida in 2001 and the next year in Massachusetts for the way he handled millions of dollars in stock owned by a convicted drug smuggler in 1994. He spent almost six weeks in federal prison charged with contempt of court in 1996 after refusing to turn over the stock. The experience left him "embittered." He eventually won the right to practice law in Maine in 2013.

Francis Lee Bailey was born in the Boston suburb of Waltham, the son of a newspaper advertising man and a schoolteacher.

He enrolled at Harvard University in 1950 but left at the end of his sophomore year to train to become a Marine pilot.

He retained a lifelong love of flying and even owned his own aviation company.

While in the military, Bailey volunteered for the legal staff at the Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in North Carolina, and soon found himself the legal officer for more than 2,000 men.

Bailey earned a law degree from Boston University in 1960, where he had a 90.5 average, but he graduated without honors because he refused to join the Law Review. He said the university waived the requirement for an undergraduate degree because of his military legal experience. Bailey was married four times and divorced three. His fourth wife, Patricia, died in 1999. He had three children.

Ned Beatty, the Oscar-nominated character actor known for his scene-stealing roles in Deliverance, Network, Superman and Nashville, has died at the age of 83.


TMZ first reported that Beatty died Sunday morning in his sleep surrounded by family, with the actor’s manager later confirming to Variety that Beatty died from natural causes.


A veteran of over 150 films and television roles, Beatty made his first big-screen appearance in 1972’s Deliverance about four men whose canoeing trip goes tragically awry. (In perhaps the movie’s most culturally enduring and infamous scene, Beatty’s character is assaulted by “mountain men” and forced to “squeal like a pig.”) Deliverance later earned a Best Picture nomination and was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry.

Beatty and Deliverance co-star Burt Reynolds would share the screen together over the next decade, with Beatty popping up in Reynolds-starring vehicles White Lightning, Gator, Stroker Ace and Switching Channels.


In 1976, Beatty was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his essentially one-scene role as TV chairman Arthur Jensen in Network, an appearance that produced one of cinema’s best cameos and greatest monologues.

While his screen time was limited mainly to supporting roles, the Kentucky-born actor also made memorable appearances: In Robert Altman’s Nashville as the husband/manager of Lily Tomlin’s country singer, in Superman and Superman II as the bumbling sidekick of Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor, in All the President’s Men as a Miami district attorney, in Rudy as the father of Sean Astin’s title character, and in the comedy Back to School as the dean of the college attended by Rodney Dangerfield.

Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia's first president and one of the last of the generation of African leaders who fought colonialism, has died aged 97.

Kaunda was admitted to a military hospital in the capital, Lusaka, on Monday suffering from pneumonia. His aides said he did not have Covid-19.

In the 1950s, Kaunda was a key figure in what was then Northern Rhodesia's independence movement from Britain.

He became president following independence in 1964.

As head of the left-leaning United National Independence Party (UNIP), Kaunda then led the country through decades of one-party rule.

He stepped down after losing multi-party elections in 1991.

"I am sad to inform we have lost Mzee," Kaunda's son, Kambarage, wrote on his late father's Facebook page, using a term of respect. "Let's pray for him."

Zambian President Edgar Lungu said the country was mourning "a true African icon".

"I learnt of your passing this afternoon with great sadness," he wrote on Facebook. "On behalf of the entire nation and on my own behalf I pray that the entire Kaunda family is comforted as we mourn our first president and true African icon."

The government declared three weeks of national mourning with all forms of entertainment suspended.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation said Kaunda's contribution to the struggle against colonialism and apartheid would not be forgotten.

Another tribute came from Kalusha Bwalya, former captain of the Zambian national football team, who said Kaunda had made "an immense impact".

Tachibana rose to fame after an article of his appeared in the monthly Bungei Shunju magazine in 1974 that uncovered scandalous financial dealings of then Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka, who had enjoyed wide popularity because of his humble upbringing.

MANILA -- Philippine former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino has died at the age of 61, according to several government officials.
The cause of death is not immediately clear, though local media has reported he was rushed to Capitol Medical Center in Metro Manila on Thursday. The former president, a bachelor, was known to be a chain smoker, which raised concerns about his health while he was in the office.

Aquino, son of democracy icons former Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. and former president Corazon Aquino, was president from 2010 to 2016.

The younger Aquino ran on a campaign to clean up a government riddled with graft and corruption. He presided over six years of economic growth and rising foreign direct investment. Under his watch, the Philippines won investment grade ratings from major debt watchers.

Lyle ‘Bill’ Hutley, of Mildenhall, was one of 60,000 Allied prisoners of war forced by the Japanese army to endure horrific living and working conditions during the construction of the railway between Thailand and Burma.

For nearly four years he, and his comrades, suffered unspeakable treatment at the hands of their captors at the notorious Changi gaol and as they worked on the death railway, so called because of the thousands who died laying the 258 miles of track through the jungle and across the River Kwai.


A Bermondsey boy, born as the First World War was still raging, Lyle had started work at 14 then, like so many of his generation, found himself called up to serve in another global conflict that would change his life forever.


With the Royal Artillery Service Corps he was part of the British Expeditionary Force sent to France in 1940.


But by then the Army was already in retreat and Lyle and his comrades found themselves on the beaches at Dunkirk waiting to be evacuated.


In 1939, Lyle had met Ivy, the love of his life, and the woman who in May 1941 became his wife and shared his life until her death in 1997.
Two weeks after their wedding Lyle had been posted to Africa and it would be four years until he saw Ivy again.


On arriving in Africa Lyle’s regiment’s orders had been unexpectedly changed and their ship was sent on to Singapore, arriving in February, 1942, just 10 days before British forces surrendered to the Japanese and Lyle found himself a prisoner of war.


Despite his treatment, Lyle survived and eventually returned home in 1946 weighing less than six stones and with memories so terrible he never spoke of them to Ivy, whose love had sustained him through the darkest times of his life.

The war years took their toll and the couple did not have children but they enjoyed nearly 60 years together. Two years after Ivy’s death, in 1999, and accompanied by his nephew, Bill Ripper, Lyle returned to Changi Prison when he was finally able to lay the ghosts of his years as a POW to rest.

On Monday, July 5, director Richard Donner died. News came from Donner’s family via a spokesperson, who revealed he passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 91. Donner is responsible for laying the foundation for epic superhero movies through his 1978 Superman.

Nine years later, he added Lethal Weapon to his directorial resume, an enduring entry in the legacy of the buddy cop action genre. Other notable works include The Goonies, The Omen, and Maverick. Through this extensive work, Donner has many colleagues mourning has passing and fondly remembering their work together.

Fame came to Donner first with his 1976 supernatural horror film The Omen, which went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of that year. Though reviews at the time were mixed, it went on to become something of a cult classic. In the background, disagreements between Donner and writer David Seltzer split the script interpretation between vague (favored by Donner) and indisputable, favored by Seltzer.

Not a decade later, and Richard Donner made Christopher Reeve into a hero, a role that stayed with him for the rest of his life and that remains one of the most classic images of a superhero to date. Recalling Donner’s work on the film, director Kevin Smith wrote that Donner himself “invented the modern day comic book movie with Superman and called him “a natural born storyteller.” Into the 2000s, Donner again helped bring superheroes to the forefront with some choice mutations by producing X-Men. The Hollywood star William Smith who starred in TV shows including Hawaii Five-O and Rich Man, Poor Man and films including Any Which Way You Can and Conan The Barbarian has died aged 88.

The star – whose career spanned more than 75 years – passed away at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills on Monday.

His death was confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter by his surviving wife, Joanne Cervelli – although a cause of death has not year been revealed.

William had started his career in acting as a child – featuring in big screen projects from the age of eight back in the early 1940s.

He also served in the Unites States Air Force during his life time and also entered the world of sport as a weightlifting champion, an amateur boxer and a world champion arm-wrestler.

His weightlifting and boxing prowess fed in to his acting roles – with his role in 1970's Darker Than Amber seeing him taking part in one of the “most violent and realist brawl scenes of all time”, according to the MailOnline.

William famously featured in the 1980 film Any Which Way You Can alongside Clint Eastwood – which including a dramatic fight scene that rampaged through streets and restaurants.

Recapping his impressive career, the Hollywood Reported detailed in a tribute: "The 6-foot-2 Smith, who was a champion discus thrower at UCLA, an arm-wrestling champion and a black belt in the martial arts, had 18-inch biceps and could do 5,100 continuous sit-ups and reverse curl 163 pounds. As prolific as he was strong, he had a whopping 289 credits on IMDb, seemingly in everything from the ’60s onward.

"Smith starred with fellow bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian (1982) and spoke fluent Russian as a general in Red Dawn (1984) — both those films were directed by John Milius — and, as a gang leader named Carrot, battled Yul Brynner with a ball and chain in The Ultimate Warrior (1975).

Actress Katherine Helmond, a seven-time Emmy Award nominee who played lusty matriarchs on the hit television sitcoms ‘Soap’ and ‘Who’s the Boss’ from the 1970s into the 1990s, died last month at the age of 89, her talent agency said on Friday.
Helmond, who also delivered a memorable turn as a vain woman obsessed with plastic surgery in director Terry Gilliam’s dystopian film ‘Brazil’ (1985), died Feb. 23 at her Los Angeles home due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
On ‘Who’s the Boss?’ Helmond played Mona Robinson, the man-crazy mother to Light’s character, an ad executive who hires retired baseball player Danza as her housekeeper.

Mason died Saturday evening after being hospitalized for more than two weeks at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, celebrity lawyer Raoul Felder told the Associated Press.
The rabbi-turned-comedian was one of the last Borscht Belt comedians and was known for embracing Jewish themes and political incorrectness.
Tributes to Mason have poured in since the news of his death. Fellow comedian Gilbert Gottfried tweeted a photo of him and Mason, writing, "One of the best."

Crooner Tony Martin, whose career spanned from the Great Depression to the 21st century, has died in Los Angeles at 98.

Friend and accountant Beverly Scott said Mr Martin died of natural causes at his home.

The singer’s hit recordings include I Get Ideas, To Each His Own, Begin The Beguine and There’s No Tomorrow.

Although he never became a fully-fledged movie star, Mr Martin starred in 25 films, most of them made during the heyday of the Hollywood musicals.

Offscreen, he married two movie musical superstars, Alice Faye and Cyd Charisse. The latter union lasted 60 years, until Charisse's death in 2008.

A peer of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, Mr Martin sang in a warm baritone that carried special appeal for his female audience.

“He’s the ultimate crooner who outlasted all his contemporaries,” musician and long-time friend Gabriel Guerrero said from his Oregon home.

Mr Martin found his escape through music while growing up in San Francisco and Oakland in a poor, close-knit Russian Jewish family, enduring taunts from classmates.

Performing on radio led to his break into the film business. His first singing role came in the 1936 Sing Baby Sing, which starred future wife Faye and introduced the Ritz Brothers to the screen as a more frenetic version of the Marx Brothers.

As a contract player at Twentieth Century Fox, Mr Martin also appeared in Pigskin Parade – featuring a young Judy Garland – Banjo On My Knee, with Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea, Sing And Be Happy, You Can’t Have Everything, Ali Baba Goes To Town and Sally, Irene and Mary.

In 1940 he joined MGM and sang in such films as The Ziegfeld Girl (with James Stewart, Lana Turner and Judy Garland), The Big Store (with the Marx Brothers), Till The Clouds Roll By, Easy To Love and Deep in My Heart. In 1948, he produced and starred in Casbah, a well-received film musical version of Algiers with a score by Harold Arlen and Leo Robin.

Mr Martin and and his second wife Cyd Charisse released a 1976 double auto-biography, The Two of Us, and often toured in singing and dancing shows. He continued appearances into his 90s, his voice only slightly tarnished by time.

“His voice is more or less intact,” a New York Times critic wrote when he appeared at a New York club in early 2008.
He is survived by stepson Nico Charisse.

The California Department of Corrections said Alcala, 77, died of natural causes at 1:43 a.m. Saturday at a hospital near the Corcoran State Prison, where he was being held on death for the murders of four women and a 12-year-old girl.

The California Supreme Court reversed the judgment in 1984, and Alcala was granted a new trial that again resulted in a death sentence being handed down in 1986.

A Federal Appeals court overturned the sentence in 2003, but during his new trial prosecutors presented DNA evidence that tied him to the 1977 murders of Jill Barcomb, 18, and Georgia Wixted, 27; the 1978 murder of Charlotte Lamb, 32; and the 1979 slaying of Jill Parenteau, 21.

Alcala was convicted in 2010 of five counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to death.
He pleaded guilty in 2013 to the 1971 murder of Cornelia Crilley and the 1977 murder of Ellen Jane Hanover. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors in Wyoming charged Alcala in 2016 with the 1978 murder of Christine Ruth Thornton, 28, who was six months pregnant at the time of her death.

ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill Dead: Longtime Bassist Dies at 72


ZZ Top’s longtime bassist Dusty Hill has died, the band announced in a statement Wednesday (July 28). He was 72.


“We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston,” the group shared. “We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top.’ We will forever be connected to that ‘Blues Shuffle in C.'”


“You will be greatly missed, amigo,” bandmates Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard concluded in their statement.


The band was on tour when it announced July 23 that Hill, who joined the band in 1970, was heading home “to address a hip issue.” Per ZZ Top’s Facebook page, Hill had said that “the show must go on,” and so their guitar tech of 20 years, Elwood Francis, filled in to play slide guitar, bass, and harmonica. Their statement noted at the time that they were expecting Hill to have a “speedy recovery” and to return to the band soon.


The band’s U.S. tour is currently scheduled to run through the end of the year, with the final show set for Dec. 12 in Midland, Texas.

Actress Una Stubbs, known for her roles in TV shows like Worzel Gummidge, Till Death Us Do Part, Sherlock and EastEnders, has died at the age of 84.

Stubbs found fame in the 1960s, appearing in films like Sir Cliff Richard's Summer Holiday, and remained one of the UK's best-loved screen stars.

Her agent said she died at her home in Edinburgh surrounded by her family.

The veteran actress had been ill for a few months, the agent told BBC News.

After starting her career as a dancer, Stubbs became a fixture on the small screen in the 60s when she played Alf Garnett's exasperated daughter Rita in Till Death Us Do Part and the 1980s follow-ups 'Til Death and In Sickness and In Health.

She was also a regular on the game show Don't Say A Word and it's follow-up Give us a Clue, and became a favourite of young audiences as Aunt Sally in Worzel Gummidge.

She starred in another children's hit, The Worst Witch, in the late 1990s, as well as appearing in soap EastEnders, The Catherine Tate Show and sitcom Benidorm.

A rep for Mike Mitchell tells TMZ Mike died of a heart attack.
Actor Mike Mitchell, who appeared in "Gladiator" and "Braveheart," has died ... TMZ has learned.

Mitchell's rep tells TMZ the actor/bodybuilder died Friday on a boat in Turkey. The family says they believe he suffered a death from natural causes, although they weren't more specific.

The rep says, "It was very hard to believe ... The sudden death of an international actor we managed, an honest person, a real actor, a true friend, my dear friend, has saddened us deeply. I've always been honored to be your manager. I wish patience to you wife, dear Denise Mitchell, and your children. Getting to know you and gaining your friendship is invaluable. Sleep in the lights. RIP."

Mitchell started out as a bodybuilder and rose to the top ... he won Mr. Universe along with numerous World Fitness Federation's Fitness World Championships.

Mitchell competed for a bunch of titles, including Britain's Strongest Man. He won 5 Masters Mr. World titles along the way. In 2010, he was given the WWF's highest honor ... the Living Legend Award.

As for acting, he got a big break in 1994 that has shades of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He got cast in "Braveheart" because of his imposing physical presence. He went on to appear in "Gladiator," "The Planet," "One Day Removals," "City of Hell," "Life on the Line" and "Emmerdale."

Mike suffered a serious setback in 2006 after winning his 5th World Fitness title -- he was stricken with a serious heart attack.

He lived on a boat in Turkey with his wife. Mike was 65.
