As a former high school teacher in Thailand who every day witnessed students being driven to school along main roads in ridiculously over-crowded song teaows, it was with great sadness I read today of an accident yesterday in rural Thailand.

Sadnessed by the inevitability of such an accident as well as the tragic waste of young lives.

5 students killed and 15 seriously injured when a 10 wheeled truck ran up the arse of an obviously overloaded song teaow as it was u-turning to drop the students at the school on the other side of the road.

The driver of the truck fled the scene. Of course.

If this accident occured in Australia, or likely any western nation, it would be front page headlines sparking community outrage.

I doubt it will be mentioned again here.

    A fucking disgrace.

As Thaksin keeps telling us, Thailand is NOT a third world country.

So when will they stop killing their children and take some responsibility for what happens on their roads?

Without a doubt this is, to me, the most disappointing aspect of this country...

Well yet another accident today, an uncaring Thai woman in her big SUV which she probably has no idea of how to drive runs over a motor cyclist who was waiting to drive across the intersection, she got out and obviously ignored the Thai guy laying in the road and looked at the damage to her nice shiny precious.

Doesn't sound like the accident was caused by the songthaew being overloaded. "They killing their children", what are you on about?

Well getting back on Topic here is one of a motorbike driver being hit by a lorry, this was on Sunday when I came back from Ayutthaya, the location was in Pattaya on Sukumvit Road just before the Soi Theprasit turn off, luckily he weren't dead and the lorry driver didn't do a runner.

I saw 2 accident aftermaths today. Both at night, both involving moto-cy's. One at traffic lights on Chao Fa East road - where bikes tend to creep past the lights when they are showing red, and one on Viset road which is now being widened and resurfaced.

Viset road is now more like an airport runway - very wide, but without any road markings. I arrived as the ambulance was doing a U-turn and roaring off to the hospital or morgue. Had to drive past a big pool of blood in the road. The g/f wanted to stop and look, of course.

Truck coming down Canal Rd (Chiang Mai) had maanged to have his trailer disconnect which then travelled on its own merry way for about 30mtrs gouging up the road before coming to rest against to parked cars

But then how would I move all my poor possessions?

It's that kind or knee-jerk, reactionary thinking from rich motorbike owners that keeps me oppressed and poor!

Been a spate of accidents in the Jomtien strip between the lights and Hanuman, at least two reported deaths and loadsa those white spray markings that are supposed to remind people they're in control of potentially lethal hardware.

One I saw had motodop take off from Hanuman towards Pattaya, weave at speed through approaching traffic to the other side of the road and smack into a young lady motorcyclist going the same direction, just in front of me. Blood from her head/face, didn't move much and prolly in shock, not a clue about moron's passenger who was also laid out flat, but moron was back at work when I passed by again later that afternoon.

I saw a bus on its side in a ditch yesterday in Petchaburi but didn't get a photograph. Not to worry, one of the driver's colleagues decided to have a go today a bit nearer to the house.

Sukhumvit Road, accidents and film stars

So yet again I am coming back from the animal hospital, doing about 100km per hour, got a bike in front of me in the fast lane tailgating a car, he then starts to get a wobble on, I back off cos you never know how bad these wobbles will get, well his wobble got as bad as it could get and he came off, hmmm, probably best to just drive on by as my knowlege of first aid comes down to shoving as much cloth into an open wound as you can or get as much pressure on it as you can, but the dumb foks in the middle of the poxy fast lane and its 10.30pm on a Saturday night so you know most of the drivers are pissed up and he's gonna be killed cos he is just laying there, so I stopped trying to get my car in a position where it might give him a bit of a chance of not being run over, the girls got out and went to see how bad he was, some Aussie guy I think, parked his bike next to my car blocking off more of the road, by this time about 100 Thai owned cars had driven by and none of them had bothered to get involved, So I done the only thing I could do and started dragging the Thai guys bike to the edge of the road, the guy on the left in the picture started helping me, the 2 girls saw these 2 film stars and the injured Thai was left with the Aussie while they had their pictures taken, they got their priorities The Thai guy was bleeding from a a few places but he wern't feeling no pain due to being pissed, bet he feels it tomorrow though

The video is of the injured Thai guy relaxing on the highway.

For the record how does it work here? I heard if you get involved helping an injured person after an accident, you can or will be responsible for his med bills and possibly even compo if he doesn't pull through. Don't know if it's a yarn, but for future reference can anyone throw some light on this?

I think if you get them to hospital and they aint in any condition to sign themselves in and you sign them in then you could be liable, if he dies while your helping him you could be liable to a certain degree I think.

Trouble is with this one the guy could have said I knocked him off the bike, and if I was by myself it would be my word against his, as no other witnesses bothered stopping, that wouldn't be a fun situation, not sure if the Aussie saw him go into a wobble or not.
