I'll keep you posted with pics of cold, dark and dank Blighty, Christmas Markets, Wetherspoons, curry houses and my wallet getting pilfered in the Xmas shopping rush.

In fact I don't think I'm looking forward to it so much now

What part of cold, dark and dank Blighty is home?

    Yes, exactly that!

KLM to Amsrerdam, about 3 hours at Schiphol and then an hour flight to Bristol. My mum lives 20 minutes from the airport and will have one of her steak and kidney pies ready and waiting!

I avoid Heathrow like the plague.

Small world. Yup, KLM as an airline are at best bearable, but the routing is great.

I will fly them in the new year. Luckily I quite like their meatballs and mash as it has been served as one of the options every time over the last 5 or so years....

Whilst my Mum has been poorly the last few years, we have pretty much booked flights back to the UK over the Sonkran period.
It's school holiday times, so my lad does'nt miss school, and we get to avoid the mid March-April intense heat here.
The missus comes sometimes, sometimes not.
Always a pain with the visa paperwork. Next one will apply for a 5 or 10 year multi visit visa.
My Dad, who is older, but full of health can still travel, so he can still visit over here, in fact he arrives on Xmas day for nearly a month.

As others have said, if you can still visit in the England's pleasant countryside, nice market towns and villages, it can be a nice experience. Country pubs, quality Fish & Chips by a river etc etc.
Its the cities and traffic and grotty larger towns that do my head in.

    Small world.
If we have to overnight in BKK waiting for a flight, we always stay at the Great Residence.
Good on site restaurant, cheap beer, clean rooms and a pleasant ambience.
    Like the place.
    Have a nice holiday.
Somerset is prolly similar to Norfolk where i stay, and N Yorks visiting rellies, ie a green and pleasant land still.
Wonderful clean pretty countryside with none of the inner city modern world problems.
Yes, Mr Guzzi, a small world. I like The Great Residence, easy and pleasant.

The countryside in Somerset is indeed wonderful. I'll maybe visit Bristol briefly a couple of times but the rest will be spent around country villages. Well, that's my plan ar least! There's some lovely little market towns up on the Mendips with great pubs... just a shame I'll be doing the driving.

I worked many years ago for a company with an office in Norwich, at Thorpe St Andrew, and enjoyed visits there immensely. Old pubs on the river and lock-ins galore. I've often thought if we ever move to the UK it will be either the west country or over east to that part of the country.

Yes, it's all about the routing. This saves a hire car from Heathrow and all that good stuff. All the European airlines are pretty awful in economy, I don't think KLM are any better or worse than others.

And yes, we had meatballs and mash! My dauhgter told me that my mash is better... she really is wonderful!

Although, to be fair KLM set the bar pretty low.

I'm flying direct to Heathrow. It wasn't so bad last time I went, it had automated passport scanners for Brit nationals with no queuing up.

Good flight mendip. Snag a few bottles of their wine to help the flight pass.

    ^ Already done!

The wife doesn't drink on flights so I get hers as well. I even trained the littlun to ask for red wine but they saw through that ruse!

Headed back just after Christmas, kinda looking forward to it and kinda not. It's no longer home and I'm glad it's only for 14 days; it will be nice to catch up with friends and family though.

    Baladdy Hell!
    Small world 2.0
    Ditto +1...
KLM these days, miss London and an expensive 4-6 hour bus ride out, AMST to Norwich 45 minutes, get picked up by my Dad and 20 minutes later we are in his house 15 miles from Norwich.
Only downside is C&E in Norwich are a bit full on.

To be quite honest, we're not so big on food presentarion in our house.

But I have pics of KLM's offerings for Hal's 'what did you have on the plane' thread and without blowing my own trumpet, I reckon my food looks better.

You can mock, but I've never understood why they don't do more peas on planes. They microwave really well.

I have a feeling my daughter's had enough of peas, to be honest. She doesn't like to hurt my feelings!

They also roll off forks really well in turbulence. Speaking of forks, put that cutlery back!
