The article fails to mention that Bold is a dollar billionaire, he's a bit more than just "establishment". I need to make up my mind if I want to stay another two years pretty soon. A lot of this decision is going to rest on how much time I will spend doing this PGCEi

I came across this movie which may be of interest. Typical royal court infighting but centred around the importance of "fiddlers". Pretty good IMHO, great tale and excellent mood music from the fiddlers.

In Mongolian but English subs included.

    The Legend of Gobi (2019)

"The ruffles king forbids music for his kingdom and gets cursed for it. The king's right hand secretly wishes to take the throne and tries to kill the king, but the cursed king just would not die. Later when the king's right hand figures out how to kill the king and takes over the kingdom. The left-for-dead king gets local's support whom secretly kept practicing the art of music aids the king for the final battle to get the kingdom back from murderous king's right hand."

I actually like winter, which puts me in a minority. 26-2th are public holidays this month, might head to the countryside for some good ol writing exile

So within the next month I need to make a decision if I am staying for another 2 years or not, the email is sitting in my inbox but thankfully doesn't need a response for a while yet-about 3 weeks.

    Pros of staying:

Genuinely enjoy living here and want for little
Pretty solid saving potential, nice enough digs and good health insurance if I ever needed it.
Lots of hiking and outdoorsy stuff.
It's a bit different, and I like different
Don't always agree with management, but they are reasonable to deal with on a day to day basis and pretty helpful to us expats.
    Locals are friendly
Even if the cold is uncomfortable, UB is pretty livable and not what I would term a hardship post. The countryside would be a different matter.

    Cons:

The pollution- it's bad, everyone knows it and everyone gets made sick from it at some point. Todays grumble: Sinus infections + -22 in the morning temps aren't much fun
Flying anywhere can become expensive and time consuming- no cheap weekends away
    I miss swimming outside
Some elements of Mongolian work culture strike me as distinctly unhealthy- forced social and sporting events etc. The parents are seen as customers and that can have some "interesting" ramifications.

What is the pollution like at all your alternates? Where does "pollution" appear in your list, major, medium or minor irritant?

That needs expanding and comparing to your alternates.

Have you made a spread sheet of the alternatives locations and totalled them up yet? Get cracking there's a deadline looming.

Assuming you stay will the alternates still be available if required in the future?

I lived in Nanjing for 18 months and the pollution was awful there. Rarely saw a blue sky.

Knowing what the AQI normally is in Ulan Batar, there is not a chance in hell that I would ever work there. Your health should be your top priority. Money will not help you if you are breathing in poisoned air everyday...

I agree with Joffrey. I stayed four years and suffered miserably in the end because of it.. (got pneumonia, stayed ll days in the hospital, and still now am extremely sensitive to smoke/pollution (had to get an inhaler). Move on as you've been there awhile. We all know in the international field it is good to move on after three or four years. Health is important, and you can make the same or more money in places like Korea/Japan/Taiwan if you really want.

Although, ultimately if you are really enjoying it, then by all means stay. We can't tell you what to do, ultimately, you will do what you think is best.

A change of scenery for a couple of weeks, took a wander around the local marshes near "Great" Yarmouth

It's been nice to see family but it will also be nice to be back in Mongolia. So to answer OhOh, I have whittled it down to two choices.

    1. Stay in Mongolia
    2. Go back to Thailand

You're mid-30's and seem to get good holiday time back in Blighty and back to Thailand each year.

If the saving potential of a 2 year Mongolian contract would mean the difference between buying your Thai condo or not, doing another 2 years would probably be worth it. Just count down the few months to the next end of term holiday each time.
