    Mandaloopy does China

Another year, another travel and life in another country thread. I'll jam all my pics of travel and stuff in China. Thoughts so far: I really like it, it's not what I was expecting but in the best of ways. Firstly, the Chinese have been nothing but friendly and helpful- I've only seen spitting twice in three days- now, my brother was spat on in Great Yarmouth so China is more courteous as far as I'm concerned! School have been super helpful about setting the apartment up and escorting me around Qingdao and helping me settle in. Today we did as much as the bureaucracy poobahs would allow, so I went to the harbour and beach.

First Stop was May 4th Square

and facing back from the harbour

    Harbour and cityscape

Looking out to sea- I can sail, it's just one if the many things I can do but badly

The beach was crowded, but kept impressively clean for the amount of foot traffic

Walked to what is locally known as millionaires row- quiter cleaner and some massive but gaudy houses-I'd still like to live in one tho!

and another shot- into direct sunlight, naturally

and another beach one- water was clearer than I was expecting- cleaner than Patterz imo and much more mellowed out despite the crowds

More of the back streets, the Chinese, where you'r living, the local shops, cafe, bars. One can only take so many sunsets.

Was that the Sydney Opera house in the back ground on photo 3, when did the Chinese buy/steal that? What sort of boat did you have, can you rent one for an hour or day?

^ That's a great thread- might head out of town this week to Laoshan as in 10 days the police need to process my residence permit that means I will be passportless for 10 days. Looks like a lot of these trips will be a solo trip unless I can find local company, the local expats are not even half as adventurous as my Mandalay circle. A big motivator to learn Mandarin quickly!

While the level of English is quite low in China folks here are super friendly and always willing to use an app or find someone who speaks some English. Walked to the school campus today and they must be using some very old pics on the website haha- looks a little run down but it's early days and I'm optimistic

What type of medical "insurance" do you have? Is it provided by your employer of have you taken it out yourself? As the ASEAN countries have adopted English as their "common" language are train destinations etc. labelled in English as well as Chinese?

Presumably you will be teaching English.

Does every child learn it as a core subject or only some schools? What age do they start?

Have you seen the curriculum, course textbooks/electronic aids etc. If so, is it illustrated with Chinese content or western content. Have you seen anything of the examination papers and what "pressure" is applied to the teachers to award a pass score?

Do you, as a teacher stay in your own room and the different classes move between rooms? I understand that is the standard in Thai classes for the 12 to 18 age students, but I'm told the younger kids stay with one teacher who teaches all subjects.

I ask as students in Thai schools, from the "textbooks" I've seen, seem to follow western lifestyles and "living" examples. Which for the local kids here bear no resemblance to their own experiences.

I have private insurance with the school, it is pretty comprehensive

I teach Grade 1 in an international school that follows the PYP curriculum , so I teach multiple subjects-they are my class and I stay with them all day. The important tests are externally moderated- this is some relief as it will stop ( or at least lessen ) and skulduggery from the admin.

Erm, anyone taught PE to first grade? That's the one subject I have zero experience with! Chinese language, Chinese history and social studies are a no go area for expat teachers and that is when I have my planning and admin time.

Grade One, is that 5 years old? I presume you've taught the PYP before?

Is there a version with a "Chinese characteristics" or does is version taught throughout the world?

Yup, used it for 2 years in Thailand officially and used parts of it in Myanmar as we were given no curriculum or books. Nah, it's uniform as far as I know as it is part of the IB. Already been signed up for some PD courses, which is why I am optimistic about the whole thing- if they were unprofessional the wouldn't be paying for a $600 course.

Well it's a bit brighter and more happening than Mandalay, that's for sure. Joined a nice gym that has a pool and everything I could need, it's in the mall opposite my apartment so no reason not to go. Hopefully meet some more expats this week, the only one I met body shamed be within minuets of meeting and said I needed to tone up. Some people 555

Went to the local park yesterday, it was brutally hot so not many pics- going to a nice place to go for a stroll once it cools down a bit in September. The park is huge, it's nice to have some green space a few stops down the metro line.

Thinking of heading to "Beer Street" tonight
