    Ruby-tailed Wasp

Sometimes known as the Cuckoo Wasp because it lays its eggs in other insects nests.

Powerful eruption of Colima Volcano in Mexico on December 13th, 2015. That night, the weather was dry and cold, friction of ash particles generated a big lightning rod of about 600 meters that connected ash and volcano, illuminating the dark scene. In last part of 2015, this volcano showed a lot of eruptive activity with ash explosions that raised 2-3 km above the crater. Most of the night explosions produced incandescent rock falls and lightning not bigger than 100 meters in average

Those coquelicot (common poppy) where all over in Switzerland 40 years ago, on each field, near each road. Today almost no where to be seen ?!? They were rounded up...
Was visiting a wine yard in Turkey few weeks ago and we seen plenty, reminded me.

I remember them in Switzerland!! I haven't really noticed that they are no more. But I now live in the big, bad city and the only flowers you see are geraniums on balconies!! And in parks. Oh, and the Hospital has a wonderful outside terrace which they are developing into a green and flowery place. It is going to be beautiful.

Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year

Overall winner of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition

'Predatory Pursuit' earned Justin Gilligan the 2017 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year award.

A fluke picture of a cast of spider crabs and a predatory octopus has clinched its owner the 2017 Australian Geographic Nature
    Photographer of the Year prize.

Justin Gilligan snapped the photo at Mercury Passage, between Maria Island and the Tasmanian coast.

"[It was] a completely unexpected encounter with a group of hundreds of spider crabs, down off Tasmania.

"In their midst was a giant Maori octopus, which is the largest species of octopus in the southern hemisphere.
"It was acting like an excited kid in a candy store, moving amongst this swirling mass of spider crabs."
    ---

'Threatened species' winning entry from Elizabeth Howell of a grey-headed flying fox.

    ---

'Animal habitat' winner, Happy Wanderer, by Jason Stephens.

I was reading about that house a few weeks ago. Used to be a monastery. Abandoned for over a century, bloke bought it in the 70's. He comes down to get supplies twice a week.

Awesome. I'm no expert and obviously the experts have decided, but to me it looks more like an impact crater.

    Any thoughts on this one?

The Saudis can't decide (big surprise)

I can confirm it's quite salty down in there.
