That's a generous offer. You might be underestimating my general incompetence with manual tasks.

You can see the deep scratch left behind when cousin had a go at it this morning. Probably he used a hoe or something.

Maybe I am overthinking this but I'm reluctant to start what I might not finish. First tool I see I'd need is a small screwdriver. I'd need to turn off the water pump, so if I take this apart and cannot put it back together we'll have no water in the house. If it is a washer I need then I don't have one, do they sell them in mixed sizes? Probably some kind of wrench too. I guess some of that tape you use to tape up plumbing fittings. Or maybe just buy a new tap, are hey standard inlet/outlet sizes?

Maybe start by getting Mendy to pop over with his limestone rock hammer.

You need to conquer your phobia about plumbing first.

It's pretty straight forward and rewarding when youve done the job yourself.

Treat yourself to a new shower, get rid of that old one.
The chrome is flaking off on the tap.

Shutree. All of those parts are readily available at either HomePro or ThaiWatsadu if those are readily available to you. In fact most are available at any Thai Mom and Pop hardware store typically. I have found here with a water leak or faulty valve to replace it all at the same time. By a new valve, hose etc. They are cheap. Makes it a clean and easy job. Not sure why you need a screw driver though in your comment. A few adjustable wrenches and good to go unless I am missing something not in the pic.

    Good Luck

I can see myself getting DIY-shamed here.
I see a screw, so I assumed I'd undo it. It seems you'd rather pull out and replace the whole tap? I guess it unscrews.

Yes, after 2 long years of heavy use! When I was a boy we never replaced the bathroom taps. Washers, yes, taps no. My last house in the UK I did udate the kitchen taps once, in twenty years.

Not gonna shame ya mate. Many folks do not do plumbing or electrical work. no problem.

So let me ask, what are you trying to fix/repair? In the picture I think its the valve coming out of the wall? Is the hose leaking or ?

And Yes, whatever it is, replace it all. And try and find plastic hoses versus those steel wound ones. They rust and fall apart are not necessary here.

Firstly and most importantly, turn off the water to the house and drain the line by opening any low level valve until the water is gone or you will drain your entire house once you start to remove it..

Yes. Best to do. You should be able to easily remove the tap if you have a small pipe wrench. Take it to your local hardware store and you will find a number of like replacements. Typically no problem as there is standard fittings.

Make sure you buy some pipe tape to wrap threads on the new tap before you screw it in. Also to wrap threads on the connector that sends water up to heater.

Cost will be total 300 baht give or take.

If you don't have a pipe wrench large pliers should work.

A Kohler tap. Simular to yours.

Appears your water supply has a fair bit of salinity. This would account for probs you never had in the UK.

I've got a video somewhere of when I tried to replace the washing machine tap. Just water spurting out everywhere where it shouldn't.

This always confuses me. My aircon man (who does a lot of additional stuff) is nigh on impossible to get a hold of. Always working. Similarly we had a toilet replaced and were waiting a week for a plumber. Why there are so few people doing these jobs is just strange.

It is village water from an artesian well. Calcium mostly, I think. I now have a water softener in the system and that problem has been resolved.

    Ta da!

Thanks to the advice and encouragement I abandoned my idea of changing a washer and went out to Thai Watsadu for replacement parts. All fitted together. Looks easy.

    Daily Moan-tap-new-jpg

But of course it isn't easy. Not visible in the pic, it is leaking steadily from the wall. So, even as the cocktail hour is upon us, I'll be taking it all apart again.

Not enough tape? Too much tape? Not tight enough into the wall - I was hoping to get it straight vertically but it wants to tighten 3/4 of a turn more.

    Heaps of tape.

Those PVC joint threads get worn and leak.

This is as good as it's going to get. Unless it leaks overnight it is finished.

To me that tap looks upside down, not only because the brand name is upside down but also because I want the outflow pipe going down. It now goes up and makes the whole arrangement look a mess. I know I am a bit OCD, it will bother me every time I have a shower. I don't think it will make half a turn more without cracking the pvc pipe in the wall, half a turn less and it leaks.
    Martini time.
And thanks again to all those who offered encouragement and suggestions.
    Now, about that truck clutch....
