I have two projects in Borneo next week and the week after so I'm in the office busily preparing to get things just right as these are new clients and happy clients call for your services time and again . . .

So,I'm hungry and use Grab Food (the Malaysian Uber-Eats equivalent) and order a nice vegetarian dish from a Moroccan restaurant . . . spicy eggplant and egg tangine . . . I've had it before and it is very, very nice. It takes a while to prepare, but it is worth it.

It arrives and I greedily rip into it only to find they've made me a lamb tagine . . . . . . it's not that I'm against meat as I had some wonderful Syrian dishes two week-ends ago as an invitation to celebrate Persian New Year . . . but . . .

Anyway, I ate it and it tasted quite nice, but still . . . not what I wanted and now I'm 'meated' out for the month . . . at least Kuching and Kota Kinabalu have fantastic seafood and vegies

PH, genuine question not an attack.

You are in the plantation business, in my 30+ years of travels to SE asia i have seen terrible deforestation and wildlife decimation in the every increasing drive for profit --- palm oil, coconut, rubber etc. No room left for the spectacular diversity of wildlife thats taken eons to establish.

What do you feel about this, i find it fooking depressing and Borneo is basket case now.

I hear you bro. I never go on a small problem, always wait until I literally cannot stand the pain. Probably simple to deal with early, but I always put it off.

The doc said this time the work will only last 5 years. I think as a near 60 year old with a dicky heart and pre diabetes, good enough.

no worries, fair question and I agree with you. My main occupation isn't the plantation business anymore a I feel I've done what I could to address these issues, more with palm oil for the last while. My main aim was to further the importance of the RSPO, which is vital in addressing the disaster that plantations can bring, it needs to be balanced with the needs of literally tens of thousands of people who live from this industry. The annual peat and forest decimation in Indonesia can only be addressed on a G-G basis with enough clout but there are too many vested interests for this to bear fruit . . . western countries have piled as much pressure as they can - Cargill is a good example - like the EU's insistence on sustainable management or it's a 'no buy' to the extent that the Malaysian government is suffering . . . and complaining. Plus India's cessation of buying Malaysian palm oil due to the now former PM Mahatir weighing in on the Kashmir and immigration issue.

Rubber is now secondary and not a cause of much land-clearance due to the low price of latex.

Palm oil is unfortunately the cheapest and 'cleanest' oil on the market . . . and demand is only growing.

So, yes. It is depressing. Big business, local interests and government corruption (especially in Indonesia) will guarantee that this doesn't stop.

We still have several plantations of our own, but we use sustainable techniques to increase yield and allow them to re-forest.

But that is what I concentrated on pretty much in the past, now I'm working with sustainable tourism and consulting for oil- and related companies, developers and similar to set benchmarks for SLO legitimacy wherever they're operating.

But yes. It is depressing, so the best thing to do is try to convince corporations to be more socially responsible - and social media actually helps in that regard quite a bit. Asia is slowly starting to accept that it is as important to get societal approval as it is to operate.

I hope that answers your question a little bit

    Fair go, Hats.
Sounds as if you are personally on the somewhat ethical and pragmatic side of it all.

^ as i said it wasn't meant to single you out, just that you have form in the industry. My worry is i just don't see an end to them ripping up rain forest. We have the biodiversity from this precious ecosystem and there ain't no putting it back. Its a fuking joke, a bad one that the industry is trying to brand Palm oil is either sustainable or not ffs - just "Ants Favourite Word" trying to hide the decimation of an ecosystem that is unique and cannot be regenerated. I honestly despair.

Bladdy 'ell. I need meat in every meal.

Actually remember around 2 months ago when I had to have one meal without. Breakfast, MM + kiddo had gone out, no bacon or sausages in the fridge.

The context is, in part, that plantations use existing land, not new/forested/protected

The biosphere is being destroyed by everyone from the lowliest subsistence farmer to large MNCs and governments

Had the farkin tooth extracted. Used a teaching medical center. Seems very well done and high tech. Now to see how it feels when the numbness wears off.

Took mine months, maybe 6-9 months for the gum to grow over.

Take the antibiotics (I hope have been supplied) and use mouth wash.

Good luck with a fast recovery.

I had a top molar extracted last September and the gap still feels strange when I stick my tongue in the hole. I'm starting to wish I'd gone for root canal trearment.

When the tooth came out my sinus tube became perforated and I couldn't generate any suction for a couple of weeks. Couldn't use a straw... when I sucked, the air just came into my mouth through the tooth hole. It was a really strange sensation.

I can't even read the above posts...anything to do with teeth is too much for me.

I have one of the worst set of teeth you could possibly imagine ...even for an Englishmen they are worse than bad.

I had many second teeth removed as a child due to an infection. That on top of a sweet tooth and a few games of killer rugby led to 25% loss by the time I hit 25!

Hitting the goalpost as 'keeper and cracking some at the front didn't help and now I can't bother to replace the broken false ones...

...makes me like a real Thai villager though, so who the fook cares...

i am the same with bones, many broken / fractures over the years head to foot. I had a scan some years back and the doctor reviewed it with me, end of a day and we spent 1/2 hour reviewing the various breaks and some of the stories. He was amazed i had no plates or screws and said i was lucky some healed straight. If you include ribs, toes and fingers the count got to over 31. Bits ache at times and i imagine it'll get worse with age but Tiger Balm, Chang and a warm climate is my solution. Just hope i don't meet any TD tough nuts or i'll fracture like a dropped toby jug.
