I do all these sorts of things myself. If someone can do a great job, fine. I'm happy to pay. But if they're going to fuck it up as much as (or more than) I will, I'll do it myself. And living in rural Thailand, it's almost always the latter.

Not everyone in the world has for want of a better expression , mechanical sympathy, where we look after stuff. If the mower doesn't belong to the gardener he doesn't care. I know westerners with the same mindset. When fixed tell him in the future he has to tell you if he notices anything different about the mower. Won't help but at least you tried!

I don't know your relationship with your gardener but it's very possible that the gardener does not think it's his responsibility to maintain your mower.

If someone can do a great job, fine. I'm happy to pay. But if they're going to fuck it up as much as (or more than) I will, I'll do it myself. And living in rural Thailand, it's almost always the latter.

Sorry I'm out of greens. I'm of the same opinion as you PT. My missus keeps on at me about doing things when I should be paying a Thai to do it. Unfortunately I wouldn't let any ofthem use any of my tools ie lawnmower, strimmer, etc.
The other day I paid a guy to take a load of plasterboard to the local rubbish tip in his pick-up. Next day, whilst out cycling, I came across the load tossed onto the side of the road 500 meters away.

I don't know your relationship with your gardener but it's very possible that the gardener does not think it's his responsibility to maintain your mower.

Actually, the gardener is one of my worthless bil's but the least worthless one of the bunch. He's actually fairly cleaver and can fix stuff when he wants to but here's the same old problem all of us Farang have in LOS. They pretty much have to be told what to do - line them out and let them get on with the job. Trust/inspect but verify.

I hadn't looked at said mower for some weeks so basically it's my fault. I'm always reminding this bil to check the oil in the weed whacker as it's a 4 stroke and to change it when it gets dirty. Which reminds me, better do that check check look look on the weed whacker right after lunch before it blows up for lack of oil...

Reason I moan is that I really don't like the cold - never have, be it in the US (Michigan and Illinois) or Germany and Japan . . . living in the cold really doesn't suit me . . . I even made sure I was born in the tropics!!!!

The cold sucks, period. The longer the sun is up and the hotter it is, suits me just fine. I'd rather sweat versus wearing loads of cloths to avoid hypothermia. Even Northern California is a bit on the chilly side for my likings. San Diego is great but too damn close to the onslaught of mexicans pouring over the borders. San Diego from Chula Vista down has become a ghetto of sorts.

Everybody knows Southern Cal has the best weather in the world. The point is, can you survive elsewhere? IMNSFHO, the hottest, most unbearable climate where millions of people live: the Bolivian altiplano (specifically, La Paz). Coldest unbearable climate where millions of people live (in my experience), Quebec province Canada (specifically Montreal).

Deployments to the North Arabian Gulf sucked. Too hot for my taste.

Several weeks on a ship in the North Atlantic was the opposite extreme.

Las Vegas had it moments especially when drag racing or Baja racing. The SFI suits are not breathable gear along with with a full helmet coupled with changing trannies or an engine in 120F heat with ground temperatures reaching 150F. I would routinely lose 7 -10lbs at an event. All water of course.
