I was talking to the gf about the heat wave in Canada. After a while she asked "Is Canada in Europe?"

To be fair, she is not particularly stupid, just lacking vast amounts of general knowledge that I usually take for granted.

My moan is not her, apparently she has never needed to know where Canada is. My moan is the Thai public education system. Having spent 5 years in Isan schools it remains a mystery to me what the students learn.

Remember Thailand 4.0? They were going to be a country of rocket scientists and creative geniuses by about now.

Front door was open long enough for me to walk out through it.

Now there's a big buzzy fly downstairs doing laps at 1,000,000 kph @ 10,000dB.

Though, would a Canadian student of 5 years automatically know where, say, Laos or Myanmar is.

Or, using PB as an example, would their teacher.

I think the five years he's referring to is time that he spent teaching, not the total amount of time his gf spent studying.

Shutree, one of my best Thai friends who is uni educated, once asked me if my family in Georgia were ok. I didn’t understand why she would ask me that. She said she had seen there was a war in Georgia and was worried for my family. She didn’t know the difference between the US state of Georgia and the Eastern European country of Georgia.

She thought the US was fighting Russians in my home state!

I remember being 8 or 9 and REM were about the biggest band in the world, and had read or heard they were from 'Athens, Georgia', and presumed they were from ancient Athens.

Possibly doesn't show the best side of the place.

I remember something like that happening to a bloke on ajarn who lived in Petchabun and posted about it.

He was watching 'Walking Dead' with his gf when she turned to him and asked in all seriousness 'Do they have a lot of zombies in America?'.

^^ A group of fans flew to Bucharest instead of Budapest to watch a Euro 2020 match.

Still, bet they got pissed, laid and had a great ol' time.

    ^^ It goes both ways.

I remember after I first started spending time in SE Asia in the late 90s... I was chatting to a mate's wife back in Somerset and she asked me in all seriousness whether the oriental girls had a sideways 'penny slot'.

Well, no. Look at some of the places Ludacris and his fellow rappers/hip-hopsters live in Georgia. Poor things.

I've been asked that a few times in Thailand. But, on visits to the USA, I've also been asked if I live in an igloo.

    That would make the news.

To be fair, I couldn't place either Georgia within 500 miles on a map. Despite having been to Atlanta, I remember almost nothing about the place. Never been to the other Georgia, although a friend's son married a Georgian girl and both she and her mother are charming people.

How many of these can you point on a map, without the visible names, if asked?

Not so unusual not only in Thailand.
Actually, in most of Europe countries, that Asian country Georgia is known as Gruzia.
And mainly because of their very good Gruzignac

    Daily Moan-gruzignac-jpg

Quite affordable in my young years (Gruzíňák)...

Once was here a thread of somebody travelling in Georgia - Gruzia.

    The people call themselves Sakartvelo...

And yes, Stalin (Džugašvili) is the most famous man born in Sakartvelo, from all population there worshipped...

Eduard Shervardnadze, a longtime FM under Gorbatchov, Yeltzin, had been a president for few years (his granddaughter Sophia can be seen in political talkshow in "Kremlin-controlled RT") before he was deposed by the tie-eater and John McCain's good friend Saskashvili in a "Rose revolution"...

Well, duh. But, if someone said to me they were going to the Harbin Ice Festival I would know they meant Harbin in China and not Harbin, Ga. USA!
