^ many Thai restaurants seem to use those tiny pink tissues, which if used singly aren't enough to do anything. You end up having to grab several of them just to clean up. When they're packed too tight, they do tend to come out in a wad, which usually is more than you need. So you're left with either leaving the extras on the table, in which case they may be thrown away and wasted. Or, you can pocket them or try to stuff them back in the holder.

In the long run, it would probably be cheaper for the restaurant to provide napkins of sufficient size to be able to use just one, but the ability to determine that seems to be lost with the mindset here of cheaper is better. The proprietors are probably also worried that if they put more expensive tissues out, they'll be more likely to be pocketed.

    My moan for today.

Why is it that so many Thai women that I meet assume that I have pledged my undying love and body to them on the first meeting?

Why is it that these women go berserk when I decline their offers to live with me and to control my life?

I have spent today being stalked by one of these nutters who spent the lunchtime apparently spying on me as I ate with my family kids in an MK restaurant in Phuket Central Festival, - then accused me of having a new, young GF (a family friend who came with me to help with the kids, and who is happily-married).

Every time this happens (and during my time in Thailand, it has happened many times), it reconfirms to me exactly why I happily live alone.

So why are so many Thai women nutters?
Groping women when you're old is fine - everyone thinks you're senile

Was she the young thing your ex lined you up with, Simon ? Don't blame her....she's just doing a background check. Blame Thai men....she's probably been cheated on.

It only begins to be tedious when they CONTINUE to stalk.

Here's my moan for the day, week and month, stinking hot, no money, no beer, powers on and off every 20 or so minutes, nets dropped down to 50 kps.
Gas bottle [ cooking] is empty and no one will get a refill, wait for me, yet they all use it more then us.
I'm waiting for a letter from the UK, which may bring the hope of some money, but unregistered mail has less then a 50/50 chance of ever arriving.
Been 2 months since we were last in town, I'm climbing the walls bored, say to the wife, enough, go get the 15000 in the village bank and lets get out of here.
Village bank only opens once a month, first day or there about of the month.

Just to top my day off, need a hair cut, number 0, cooler, village 10 Baht barber, clippers and a chair is so drunk he can't stand.

Yes, but she knew from the start that she was just a gik, nothing serious.

Now she sent me a text message in Thai saying how she realises that she is deeply in love with me (my wallet) and feels so sad now because I don't love her.

I am sure the next message will be that she is about to kill herself...

I never realised the sexual attraction that a 55-year old guy can generate in a nubile 22 year old.

Fcuking nutty woman - next she'll be attacking me in Tesco Lotus for smiling at the dheck-out girl

Well, if you consort with low class, uneducated trollops without a pot to piss in who look upon you, erroneously, as an escape from their squalid, futile little lives in order to satiate your goatish desires for free then what on earth do you expect?

Stick with whores if you can't control your wanton lust.

Well excuse me, but whores is exactly what I was after ==> a spot of nooky for a financial reward and absolutely no other commitment. I made that clear from the outset, which is probably why most 'applicants' were fat and butt-ugly.

I think Thai restaurants fear napkin theft? Hence rolls of toilet tissue suffice. I hate wiping my mouth and hands with something meant for wiping my ass.

Blew up my VOM multimeter last week so went to Amorn yesterday to pick up a new one. The display is in a quiet corner, about 1 meter by 1 meter at floor level and there is a store dude sitting right in front of it on a small stool texting. I think to myself.... time to have some fun. First I stand there, then slowly move in. No response. I see one model I want to look at and reach past his head, inches away and pull it out. No reaction at all. Nope, not that one so I put it back. Then I reach past the other side of his head, almost touching his left ear. This guy is good! No flinch at all. I put it back, and finally I say "Kah-thodh" and he leans back a bit so I can reach another one. After that one he finally stands up, but doesn't really move out of the way, still texting. I decide which one I want and say to him in Thai..... "Shop here is really busy today isn't it?" He makes a strange gurgling sound and then I ask him for the model I want. You need to make dealing with service help in Thailand into some form of recreation to survive here. My moan is really that I can't tell this story to my wife because she will launch into a dozen similar episodes as it drives her nuts when clerks are unresponsive like this. It's either texting, doing their make up, sleeping, or picking your nose. Customers are an annoyance when you have a job in Thailand.

15 yrs ago, Thai were pleasant to deal with, the customer came first.

Today, it's as you point out, a total disinterest in anything other than their mobiles, mirrors, noses and sleep.

I don't bother trying too hard to get shop staff's attention, just walk up to and pick up what I want and head for the door.

They soon wake up. I then ask for the checkout counter, and pay.

Easiest, it avoids listening to pointless explanations of why such and such an item ain't available in all of Thailand, while in fact it is, usually at a competitor's shop around the corner at low cost.

I usually let my lady do the haggling and explaining, but first I make a diagram/drawing of wanted article for her not to misunderstand me in the process!

^ Have to say, I disagree. Seems that long ago the shops were populated with even more sales clerks doing even less work. I remember going into Tantupon (before Central) where the girls stood in the aisles directly in front of the goods you were shopping for, gabbing away with each other, oblivious of the shoppers. It was like standing around yacking, repairing their makeup, and looking good in their short skirts was their job.

I noticed the sea-change in shop staff behavior around 2007, after Thaksin's 5 yr splurge of economic growth, lots off cheap goods started arriving from China, in bulk, lotsa bling and of course, the power of the media.

The Bangkok girl image spread to the outer reaches of Isaan and further to Laos, bringing with it the "Gimme money!" traditional dress and gentle nature got replaced by sly and cunning.

Have to agree with you MKit, the shop girls were a lot more friendly and serviceable. I used to go shopping for my evenings entertainment at Robinson's and Central. Now they aren't as friendly or I just don't have that monger's eye anymore.

Its not like you're looking for a career working in one of the thousand retail businesses is it ENT?

Didn't you and Misskit read what I said?

I indicated that I think that shop staff are less polite these days compared to 1998, probably due to the Thaksin economic boom, and that the current sales model is just as bad, if not worse, a mollycoddled bunch of narcissists.

No need for a career, I trade so I'll take anything you've got for what ya want, at a price.

PS. long ago to me is 20 or more years, not 5 or so.
Ya must be a spring chicken yet, eh Misskit?
