Sounds good
Ok ,, job done , oil on the oil rag paper
Another suspect appearing from the Sukhothai visit again oil on oil rag paper ,, love this stuff,, again nowhere near finished these are just some work in progress shots for anyone interested in the process I use ,, not saying it’s the right way , it’s the way I do it that’s all .
Hopefully will finish it off tommorow as we are confined to barracks looking after Mum and Dad this weekend while the SIL gets a little respite break away , then we’re off to BKK Monday then Heathrow Tuesday so I’m guessing this will be the last one over here this year
Jan making a cameo appearance bless her
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs
Well kinda finished it , bit rushed as it’s our last day at home back to BKK in the morning .
So that’s it from this little months stopover here , how many more times I come over now I have no idea and as I said before hopefully we will be relocating shortly into the new year , so we will see what that brings anyway I hope to bring plenty of fresh work from Northumberland to the table as and when I get going
Sukhothai 2 oil on oil rag paper
Yup , that’s fair enough Wills , these are kinda cobbled together and I’m not comfortable painting in this heat.
I know it’s a bad workmen who blames his tools , but I’m using that awfull paint available from the B2S in udon it’s like thick caulking paste out one of them guns and I use their odourless thinner to mix it with , you kinda end up either with ink or cement depending on the colours .
But thanks for taking the time to comment and feedback.
Looking forward to using my own paints back home up in Northumberland
Well it’s that time of the year again and although we haven’t had snow where we live yet we have had extreme cold resulting in layers of frozen mist on the ground , so kind of essentially almost a white coat .
Ive been dying to paint this last week but have held back as Jans got me a new set of primaries for Xmas and I shall now be using only them in the future , only about 8 colours in total so I’m hoping my paintings will begin to take on a more uniformed style , I shall be selling the vast collection of paints I currently have which will be no problem .
So something a little different for you today , I got the old charcoal sticks out and went down to the Naze part of Walton to sketch this gnarly old tangled oak ,, happy Xmas to any of you viewing this thread and hope to see you again in the New Year
Well to keep myself amused over this cold wet season I thought I’d have a go at a portrait .
Not just any old portrait I have allways wanted to have a go at painting my FIL , this is a man who fought in the Vietnam war and I have been told of some of the horrendous incidents he was involved in ,, he has those eyes of cold steel , but has a very warm heart inside .
I managed this year when we was over to manage to catch him in one of his classic sideways glances , the one I’ve allways wanted to paint.
So the first pic up will be the image I’m working from , then I will post pics of every stage from the start to the finish for anyone who is interested.
Now before I begin apart from about 30+ years ago doing a very crappy copy of another painting I have never ever attempted a portrait , so I have to be prepared to just give you a larf , my FIL disown me whilst falling on my sword , but as they say if you never try you will never know .
Here I go , I have selected a 16” by 12” deep edge canvas and I shall be using my new Lucas 1862 oil paints the dear wife got me for Xmas .
I shall only be using 4 of these paints as I am using the Zorn pallete ,, Raw Sienna , Flake White , Vermillion , Ivory Black ,, that’s it .
First off I mix very very thin washes of the black white and vermillion , trying just to get rid of the awfull white canvas but more importantly giving me a kind of base shape , using the largest brush I possess a number 16 black hog bristle filbert shape
Round 3 ,, introducing a little colour to help me gauge where I’m going wrong ,, anyway this is oil and I can have a million goes at it to try and get some kind of resemblance , for me with my very limited ability oil is the best medium
This is it for today , will try and have another go tommorow , it’s probably gonna be beyond what I can do but I’m loving the challenge of something other than landscapes , although I can’t wait to get out when it’s warm enough to paint landscape .
Im also building my own new plein air paint kit at the moment , I will do a post on that later
I think his face from eyebrows down is still compressed and too pointed toward the chin
Little adjustments to the eyes and ear and introducing a few hair lines to see how things are relating to each other , Jan came in from work and burst out laughing ,, not because she thought it was crap ,, it was because she could see her Dad appearing on the canvas ,, after looking at where I started out she didn’t invisage him making an appearance any time soon a few small daubs of shirt colour quickly brushed on to serve as a base to work over later
Further adjustments made to the shirt arms plus a base coat over the shirt to be reworked .
adjustments around the right eye to skin tones , ear reshaped again , bit of work on the hair which again once dry will be reworked
At this stage I am very pleased with how it’s all gone so far and have really enjoyed doing it , for me and I understand that probably is only me I have captured the look that I was after , if I can make it better and finish it off I shall be pleased and know it was worth having a bash.
HNY to anyone following , hoping to paint much more plein air this year with my new painting gear I’m making , as I said before I will do a small photo piece of it and what I done for anyone interested in maybe making themselves a very inexpensive bit of kit
It’s looking good, I must admit I was a little skeptical when you first said you’d paint a portrait because landscapes are so totally different but you’ve done a great job
Yes thanks Wills ,, I’m hoping once I tune the hair up a bit , sort the background and his shirt out we will have my first proper portrait , not something I’m gonna make a habit of but this is one I’ve allways wanted to do .
The old boy typically being the head of the family roost I hope will be chuffed to bits to have it on his wall and show his mates
Waiting for some drying at the mo , so hopefully make some progress soon
Good work Nigel. In my opinion, and I am definitely not an artist, I reckon you were closer with your first go (second picture) than you next try (3rd picture).
You turned him into a conehead. I reckon you should have just taken a bit off right across his head and kept most of that almost right angle on the top left.
I think you may have broaden his shoulders in the 3rd picture as well which brought his head back into a better ratio size wise.
I enjoy seeing your artwork so thanks.
