One of my favorite artists/teacher is Sterling Edwards, his books and DVDs on transparent water color are a great wealth of info on the medium. I'm not sure if he does acrylics but there is a lot of crossover in the art world between mediums. Concepts, ideas and methods are sometimes quite transferable to any medium.
In one of his videos (lots avail. on youtube or distributor websites) he explains the 'excitement' of learning techniques and methods. Once you've got them down pat the excitement is gone and your off looking for another challenge.
In that light I've been fooling with acrylics as you well know. I am learning slowly but then I got nothing but time.
There is a site called TV Anytime: The Painting and drawing channel. I watched a demo by Fraser Skarfe on acrylic landscapes. Not a complete run through the painting but a good start. His final was outstanding. He took the viewer to the point of a basic sunset and left you there.
The following is my rendition or try at following along. there is a ton that I want to change both from my own perspective and some technical thingys. Pretty basic but the challenge for me is to see how easy or difficult acrylics are to correct/do-over/modify. Its a learning experience I thought I might share, so here is the first pass. W&N artist acrylics on acrylic paper (really the first time using this ground and not sure if I like it over canvas boards or stretched canvas. Better than using heavy water color paper but.............. time will tell I guess.
Now I'll try and change some things, add some interesting details and see what happens. You can be the judge and jury LoL.
BTW this series is available on Sky 191 and freesat 400 in England. Or you can view it here.... TV Anytime on The Painting & Drawing Channel on the web. Shows daily or nearly daily I believe and the weeks programs are on the web site until the next week's episodes are available. They cover a myriad of subjects.

Well done EG ,, that would certainly poke you right in the eye when you walked in the room ,,
Looking good, I'm interested in the changes.
Interesting article I read today about a 10 year old lad from Norfolk.
He's aleady sold lots of paintings and received over a million quid!
Mind you, he's pretty good.

One of the MAJOR issues when moving from water color to acrylics is the color shift. When dry, water colors fade in intensity by sometimes 40 -50%. Acrylics will always dry darker in intensity sometimes hugely so. The binder evaporates (sometimes there is LOT of binder in the cheaper paints) leaving a higher concentration of pigment.
After playing with WC for a couple of years its really difficult to reverse the thinking process.
But then again I do like bright colors

Pics of his latest work, he really is something. Can only imagine what his early paintings will be worth in a few decades.

I,ve allways been facinated by the scenery in China , Tibet , Nepal etc ,, allways seem such mystical mysterious places to me and I really want to paint there , however in the meantime I,m gonna start doing a series of paintings / drawings from that side of the world with what inspiration I can get ,, so here goes I,m gonna kick off with this little pastel on a piece on Sennilier card using Unison soft pastels

I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs![]()
Ok second one I,ve painted today in the Chinese way of things ,, I,ve gone for a watercolour this time only using a very limited pallet of 4 colours , french ultra - light red - raw sienna - burnt sienna .
I have tried to paint in the loose + free Chinese way but I think I have well FAILED ,, its not loose and I am so bloody angry with myself for fiddling about ,, I seem to have lost a lot of what I learnt over the years and am making some very basic mistakes .
I gotta up my game somewhat ! trouble is with watercolour you have to keep learning and practising ,, looking forward to having free time to dedicate to this in the near future

^ Parts of it are quite nice. I don't like the car park very much though.
Lets put it this way ,,,,, if I was standing there with a uniform on you would be the first ticketed ,, job done ,,,,, NO EXCUSES![]()
I like the colours of the pastel. And I'm not sure why you don't like the Chinese one, it looks good to me.
Cheers mate ,, well they are both Chinese as will be a few from me now .
Its just the fact I have been faffing around with the watercolour instead of preparing things correctly and crashing in with it.
That is only a small painting in the scale of things i.e. 7" by 16" approx ,, I used to work on paper about 3 times that size with no probs ,,,, but now I am struggling with it ,, just shows if you take your foot of the gas .
Fair enough, same as anything really.
Trying to learn multiple mediums has proven tougher than I expected.. After playing with the acrylics for awhile I sat down yesterday to splash some water colors on paper. What a freaking disaster. It seems like I need to start all over again. I am not sure how some of these folks can move from one medium to another without even a hiccup.
Love the first pic, you gotta show me the pastel thingy lol when your around. But be warned that the only pastels I've seen here are oil based so bring a supply with you. I think I saw toned papers but not sure now, if I did it wasn't a big collection.
