Taking a break from painting. I came down with covid a week ago and I'm still in it's grip despite being fully vaccinated plus two boosters. Yuck!

Hope you feel better soon Humbert
Thought I’d show you the process I’m going through right now as I create a stormy wave painting ,, this piece of 8mm mdf I have cut to approx 30” by 14” ,, I then put 3 coats of grey gesso over it over a 24 hour period then when it’s dry the next day I begin .
First decision I make is where my horizon will go and I stick a dead level piece of masking tape across it , then paint my sky in , a light mix of French ultra and touches of magenta and burnt sienna to grey it down a bit.
Then I mix up some Prussian blue , magenta and some yellow ochre for the rear sea and very carefully painting it up to the sky line without touching it .
Then I bash in very roughly the shapes of the rough waves in front of it all .
Just 3 shots to start off , more to follow on later as I make progress ,, or not
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs
the translucency of the green wave is very nice! I take it you are using oils?
Yes sorry the one thing I forgot to mention , just use those awfull imo acrylics for holiday sketching ,, albeit when we go to Thailand in November as we have our own little shack out there I shall be painting with my oils as neither of us are bothered about the smell of em .
Yes the translucency of the wave is being achieved by varying degrees of lemon yellow with ivory black , I will turn the wick up a little bit as I progress but not overkill it ,, it’s very easy to ruin it and the last thing we want to end up with is yet another of those million silly waves with a bit of light poking through it
Ok it’s probably hard to spot , but I’ve actually spent a good 3 hours on this today many many shades of white mixed up , paint on step back look adjust values etc
Ive just ordered myself a long springy number 01 rigger brush as the brushes I am using are about as much use as a hammer for fine detailed work , anyway it’s gonna be a good few days for this to dry enough to work on again.
Nige, I reckon you could be giving Sue Read a run for her money - she only paints the sea in Cornwall

Get well soon Humbo.
Lovely, but not sure I'd stick it above a radiator.
Blimey I’ve just seen that LT ,,, the answer to the question is no
The positioning of that was entirely the clients choice ,, I did mention it but they was adamant that was where they wanted it
Jesus ,, Mike I’ve just looked at the prices of her paintings ,, I’m in the wrong business
That is looking fantastic Nige, literally jumping out of the painting now. That’s why I think oils are king!
yep, that's why i posted it. she's carved a niche out by focussing one thing - your seascapes are getting better all the time so perhaps you should aim for some unique angle on them, hers, besides waves are her ugly distracting (IMO) vegetation she adds in psychedelic colours.
Funny that Loy mentions the face, many people like imagining alternate images in abstract art but you have unwittingly added one and could turn that into a signature in your seascapes.
Anyway my 2p worth.
If you look again , there are 2 faces there ,, there is one like a small child’s face above the large face that looks a bit like the Edvard Munch scream expression ,, both these faces look distressed
Maybe the souls of people lost to the sea ,, spooky , I’ll leave em in there anyway
Anyway I hope people are enjoying a little insight into my process of making a painting the way I do it , not saying it’s correct it’s the way I do it .
I will show how I make a float frame to fit this piece afterwards so you can see the complete job
Believe it or not another hour on this today , balancing some of the shadow areas against the light areas ,, getting bored of it now and that’s why I’ll never make anything other than a hobby artist ,, no probs with that I know my limitations
Moving on to making a frame for this one now , then I will come back to take a fresh look at it
That is looking fantastic. What size is it?
Thanks Wills it’s coming along ,, size wise it’s 24 inches by 11 inches
I dislike acrylics too but they are manageable if you use a wet box and mist the canvas frequently. I really don't want the smell and mess of oils where I'm living now. I'm doing more and more small watercolors. If I do anymore acrylics I will move my style more toward abstraction.
Here's another little watercolor...

After I did that one above I had some paint left over on my pallete and one of the ladies I know who walks her dogs along the stour in Flatford had one of her dogs majorly attacked by one of them bastard pit bulls off a lead which resulted in emergency surgery and her dog cannot walk for another 6 weeks , so I painted this little piece and gifted it to her , to cheer her a little which she loved of her favourite walk
