I bought some oil pastels which I hate.

Well I have to agree on that one so do I ,,, so why did you not buy the soft pastels I use ?

I made the mistake of buying oil pastels once , I hated the bloody mess they made so I gifted them to my 3 grandchildren to re decorate my sons living room , as he had ben rather rude to me at the time

You can buy some very cheap student grade oil paints and some cheap oil card and cheap brushes in Thaialnd , I know I bought some last visit in a very small town , infact I brought the 15 bht brushes home with me and am still using them .

I have to say its a poor workman who blames his tools anyway , and I would have thought as an American you would have rose to the challenge and amazed us with a stunning piece of work on here , I was also hoping to learn from your take on the same subject . I know you said it was uninspirational to you and fair enough , but I put my neck on the block by being willing to accept a challenge from you with something more to your taste

Anyway Bluey you asked the question mate and this is one of the few animal pics I have done in oil ,, yeah ok its a bit naff I know and it was painted in a hurry about 8 or 9 years ago now , and unfortunately there is a sad story behind it , the canvas is very big about nearly 5 foot deep by 1 foot 4" wide , it hangs on my eldest son's bedroom wall .

It's got fuk all to do with you quim. I am not bound by Nigel's time schedules. As far as I can see he's got a lot more free time than me.

I've been reading some watercolour tutorials, such as this one.

but the planning ahead and concepting inside your head just eludes me.

and looking up Albert Namatjira, it appears that he used watercolour over pencil on paper most often.

Here's a couple of his (sorry NigelandJan) just for comparison. I prefer mine, not in an egotistical my paintings are better than his, they're not, clearly. But for me I prefer the stronger colours and textures that oils offer.

Oh well thats a shame Humbleone ,, I was hoping for some positive learning from yourself ,, I am surprised at your lack of challenge ,, most Americans I have met have been up for the challenge , and have also been a hell of a lot politer .

Never mind if your not interested I cant drag you kicking and screaming into it ,, move on into something you are interested in .

but the planning ahead and concepting inside your head just eludes me.

As an observer I always considered that water colours were the easiest medium, if you paint say a sunset you can slop down a dollop of colour and the paper will absorb and spread it out for you , a bit like a tie dye t-shirt .
whilst a blob of oil paint will just sit waiting to be spread out .
but having looked at it a little more maybe I'm wrong .

If it is such a one way street, light to dark with no over painting allowed ,and a mistake is game over ,then I cannot see why Artists don't just use watered down acyrlic paint ,which caN BE over painted
guess there are reasons though...?

Thats the one thing I have never used Bluey ,, know absolutely nothing about them so I cant help you .

The only thing I do know is the garish colours I have seen are not for me
