Funny situation here in the Uk now in what’s known as lockdown 2

very different to the first one with everyone having an exemption excuse in their pocket

thought I would try my luck at a bit of plein air painting by the river stour in Stratford st Mary ,, thought I was safe and out the way of the covid police ! How wrong was I ,, the bloody land owner came over bawling at me like demented loon and told me to get off his land right now !

just managed to scrape this little scene together before I was evicted lol miserable bastard ,, not finished but that’s how it is

It's hard to avoid the loons at the moment.

I call them the "Covid Zombies", looking wild eyed with terror at anyone in sight determined to get their exercise in.

A lot of irrational and scared people out there .

To be fair to him , I’ve just found out during lockdown one people were going over there lighting bbq’s on his land and leaving loads of empty beers tins and all manner of crap also people were camping there

I had a similar scenario with a farmer a couple of years ago my car parked in his field entrance as he was driving by in his car , however he was far more reasonable when I explained as long as I was there it diminished the fly tipping / pikey problems in the area , he actually agreed at that point , walked over to take a closer look at what I was painting and bought it off me after I had finished and ran it up to his farmhouse for him

The weather has turned very cold here now so it’s practice time indoors for me at the mo .

so painting live outside among other things requires speed so I set myself little painting challenges with no more than one hour on each painting , this stops all the fannying around it’s more Bish bash bosh and keeps it loose

the next two paintings below were painted just like that

Now for something completely different , you wouldn’t want to buy a second hand car from this dodgy looking bastard !

Never ever have I tried a portrait nevermind a self portrait , I can safely put it on here as it looks nothing like me , more like Phil Collins after too much ice cream , to be fair there are similarities but looks more like my brother .

I used the Zorne pallete ,, ivory black , yellow ochre , vermillion , raw umber and titanium white

Again I strictly applied the one hour rule and bashed it on , quite pleased with some of the proportions , bearing in mind I went straight over an old crap painting with no marking out at all

was good fun and will now do more properly

    Nice work Nige

Convincing Euclidean perspective on the huts

I can almost feel the gravelly coarse texture of the English sand under my bare feet

Authentic greenish grey British seaside seawater

I like everything about this painting. The perspective, the sand, the water. But, the sky is just amazing.

Thankyou all for your comments , glad your enjoying them still

There is an old building near us in Kirby le Soken that has access to the backwaters , it used to be an old pub and was rumoured to have Jack the Ripper hideout there back in the day

I went down there in the week to do a tiny 8 by 6” study of it and someone immediately bought it off me lol , anyway I have the image of it to work on a bigger one now

    Yep.

By the way, great stuff, Nigel.
I very much enjoy viewing your paintings.

Happy new year everyone ,, the last two paintings above sold New Year’s Eve and the other on New Year’s Day plus I’ve just been given four commissions to do at my leisure .

This is fantastic news for me
as I extend and enjoy my retirement . Never will I make money from it , but the hobby is paying for itself and earning us some nice meals out and some nice treats for the misses .

Strange little commission given over Xmas , to paint this family bench here in Frinton , the first one you see in the painting , I was just told to paint the bench from any angle I wanted so I came up with this one , they absolutely love it and have now ordered another one with both of them sitting on it .

Oil on primed 4mm MDF about A4 size

Another bit strange view I have been tasked with painting is this one just round the corner from where we live , not an easy scene to paint but I’m going to try and make something of it .

Just for a change I thought I would show you my first block in of the canvas and put the finished one up later .

This is going right over the top of a failed sunset picture I just could not get happy with , it’s a box canvas so no frame and paint right round the sides of it about 400mm by 150mm in oil

I look forward to seeing the finished pic of the second one.
